Their first EP, a three-tracker of techy, acid-laced house with tongue-in-cheek nods to UK raving past and present is released on 21st January 2013. The collaboration was born of their shared love of acid house and rave culture, and the desire to do something a bit different to their solo work. Both bring considerable talents to bear, Ducts classical training and detailed craftsmanship, and Owens idiosyncratic grooves and dancefloor focus combine in unexpected ways to produce something that sounds like neither and both.
This makes for a storming 8th release on Shades: opener ‘God Bless’ sets out their stall in no uncertain terms, with wiggly 303s and deft samplework building into a surefooted hybrid bubbler which owes as much to UKG as its acid house forebears. Yet follower ‘The Awakening’ will be the highlight for many: with an irresistable disco-inflected groove built from chunky beats, vocal refrains and acidified riffs on the classic ‘Rapper’s Delight’ bassline, it’s sure to blow up dancefloors everywhere. On the flip, ‘Woke’ is one for the heads; a full-on acid workout that takes no prisoners for the duration. Awakening forms the eighth release on Shades of Grey; an imprint set up by Duct, Fybe:one and Owen Howells, and dedicated to showcasing the best emerging talent in the UK scene.
