with the sublime sounds of um001 still resonating through the drum & bass world, the bristol based utopia collective build on their impressive debut with an equally stunning second single. another long-time supporter of the utopian cause, survival (exit records/audio tactics/dnaudio) steps up with the hypnotic and enchanting traveller whilst the sect give mako and mutes incendiary >connexion< their unique treatment. dj support: ltj bukem, doc scott, dj marky, fierce, makoto, bailey, loxy, total science, spectrasoul, dj lee, flight, instra:mental, survival, invaderz, squire, insiders and many more
fields is the only utopia artist to have 2 solo vinyls, and now it is time for his third. championed by the likes of break, calyx and goldie, *on your own* is rugged yet snappy piece of bass music. going for a wooden not plastic approach, it combines classic hip hop vocals with new age bass work. the flip is the best stepper yet on utopia and has the funk, which is hard for most 2 steppers. the interchange of bass and mid tones creates an infectious groove perfect for the dancefloor. supported by: break, dlr, doc scott, goldie, calyx, teebee, andy c.
mikals *spiritual* is inspired by the sounds of classic metalheadz. a relaxed atmosphere soon gives way to a thunderous kick drum and warped bass. it is easy to hear how this vinyl cut has been hammering clubs across the world.on the flip continues utopias desire to push for consistent quality. rido performs his remix duties of *the chant* most admirably. dream-inducing atmospherics introduce this one, lulling us as the break builds up from the back of the mix into a climatic drop of beat and bass weight combined with the most meaty bass stab for the turnaround soldiers. dj support from andy c, friction, goldie, break and many distinguished others.
um019 is a single by metalheadz, dispatch and critical artist hydro, alongside some esteemed friends. label boss mako and hydro since meeting in paris a few years ago, have remained close and enjoy a shared mutual respect. utopia are very happy to introduce him to our roster.
for side a hydro teams up with stadium dubstep producer habstrakt, and fellow french talents war and mateba. the result is a fine example of how to create movement in the art of groove and atmosphere.
side b brings sam kdc into utopias family. alongside hydro once again, they combine to bring us an epic journey, culminating in a smokey, yet powerful second breakdown.
utopias 16th vinyl single brings label stalwart break into the fold once again for a hard hitting roller that has been getting reactions all over the globe since it got leaked into the top djs hands. the a side teams up the symmetry boss with utopia label honcho and recent metalheadz addition mako, with his long term partners fields and villem. the production and weight are unreal whilst retaining a woody rather than plastic aesthetic.
utopias 12th release brings two new artists to the roster. sunchases nathnenia is a wonderfully constructed piece of minimalistic piano ambience done at 170 bpm. the flip sees exciting new talent detail fresh from releases on med school and commerical suicide, come with a tribal dancefloor rhythm called green rain. this one has been destroying raves, loved by both jump up heads and dark soldiers alike. this 12 inch shows that the ukraine can come with some special music and continues utopias tradition of having two sides on fire.
founded only 3 years ago by mako, the utopia music imprint has already made a positive impact on the drum & bass scene with a stable of innovative producers. next up on the release schedule is a massive tenth release in the form of utopia 10.the a-side sees a mighty collaboration between label owner mako, break, fields and villem. with all these guys on the track, you know the bar is set high. dont let the chilled beginnings of dilligence lure you into a false sense of security because you will soon be smacked around the head with a bassline that is verging on psychotic and beats ready to bring down anything that stands in the way. on the flip side, russian producer getz carries on where they left off with the rolling, relentless basslines of my soul. i love how the vocal samples lend a feeling of despair to the music.
the ninth release from mute and makos utopia music imprint comes from fields.
fields – btc: if there was ever a tune that was a genetic hybrid of konflict and dub phizix, this is it. bleeps, bass, and the delicious combination of woody yet weighty snares and tight percussion.
fields – elemental: warm, pacy, electro dnb, done the fields way, which as far as utopia and a growing number of fans are concerned, is very much the right way. with support already from john b, kasra, spectrasoul.
the second utopia single this year comes from mikal fresh back from his outing on skreams disfigured dubz label. headbanger and the chant come out on vinyl on the 7th may and have already seen support from none other than rob da bank, kasra, ant tc1 and many more.the release in the words of label boss mako …
the chant - bass, hyper-snappy drums and a tight, energetic groove. badass.
headbanger - stomped-out beast. one for the 97 tech step headz.
the a side combines old metalheadz vibes with the progressive ambience of god speed you black emperor. the intro washes over you with a calm wave of vibes before crashing down with future jungle breaks and bass. the b side is a beautiful interpretation of an old piano piece that has been given the drum and bass treatment. a snappy snare combines with an elegant bass line to provide a great piece of music in its own right. suited for both the bedroom and the dingiest of clubs, this 12 inch shows again the diversity of utopia music and its passion for supporting musical endeavors.
dj support: ltj bukem, d bridge, bailey, loxy, total science, break, spectrasoul, mikal, flight, survival and many distinguished others.
after his brother villem dropped 2 slices of ice cold beats for the last utopia release, fields comes with the polar opposite with summer flavours for his first ever solo 12 inch. the a side is >foundations<, a warm sunshine-filled bass heavy roller with a touch of the melancholy. driven by simplistic drums shrouded wonderfully by subtle percussion, this roller hits heavy with the bassline, timed perfectly out of a down-sweeping rhodes, backed-up by a loopy vocal which can only move you. on the flip is a track called >unspoken<, a deep sub-filled minimal affair. it gently warms you with nuanced harps and percussion, before hitting you with stripped-back drums and a wall of sub bass.
dj support: ltj bukem, bailey, loxy, total science, break, spectrasoul, mikal, flight, survival and many distinguished others.
utopias new boy villem drops two slices of ice cold beats in the fourth installment of future funk. the a side is >provide<. with dischord jazz influences married with diamond cut beats and swathes of sub-bass, this tune combines a minimal approach with deep impact. a tingly second drop will keep you listening. the flip side is >red matter<, a future black stepper, which brings a sense of menace without forgetting the all-important funk. sci-fi effects and a cleverly edited breakdown ensure this 12″,, will deliver on both sides.
dj support: ltj bukem, doc scott, makoto, bailey, loxy, total science, break, spectrasoul, dj lee, flight, survival and many distinguished others.
press support so far includes a doa mix/interview available from the 21st march to view online and a knowledge mag interview. watch out for more utopia releases from break, mute and mako, survival, mikal, spinline, andyskopes and fields.
kicking off a string of exciting releases for 2011, we are proud to welcome back the mighty break. hot off the success of his stunning second album >resistance<, break once again delivers the goods with a stripped back, funk infused, all out groove track. on the flip, we welcome survival back to the utopia camp, this time teaming up with mako to produce the deep, hypnotic tones and rhythms of >freedom from duality<.
