isle of jura go back to 1976 to resurrect anambra, the jewel in the crown of dub, soul & funk outfit ozo. anambra is something of a classic, a unique song thats slow, ritualistic and spiritual, mixing african & nyabinghi drumming with a buddhist sanskrit mantra om mani padme hum. an alternate version anambra river appears for the first time on the same 12 inch.

known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: �rien ne va plus,� from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys� �car thief.� �rien ne va plus� is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of �lilliput� or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on �horsing around.� �rien ne va plus� remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

native new yorker son of sound aka henry maldonado returns to delusions of grandeur with another fine ep including two floor-friendly originals plus a stripped back remix from aroop roy. for those too young to have been buying records in the early 90�s henry was a key figure, involved in seminal releases on strictly rhythm as house 2 house, maxi records as deja vu and maw records as rhythm section. to say this guy has history is something of an understatement having made an important contribution to the first wave of deep house with productions dating right back to �91. more recently he has created magic for jus ed�s underground quality, classic, razor n tape and local talk as well as establishing his own district30 imprint.

the ever enigmatic ramzi graces 12th isle with �pèze-piton� - a 9 track visitation of the familiarly disjointed melodies and rhythms that make up our favourite sonic-nymph�s unique musical language. driven by the self-appointed task of encouraging interspecies harmony (to which we gladly lend a helping hand), each song stands as an anthem for this unified global biota, trudging considerations and skittish proclamations offering up something that shows once again just how exciting ramzi�s sound is.

following the hypnotic �what�s in your head� ep in 2016, archie hamilton returns to moscow records with his first solo ep on the imprint since the release last year. since finishing 2016 with a place in ra s top 100 djs poll, he�s been touring the world, had a summer residency at amnesia and released another massive ep on fuse. an integral part of the stellar ascent of the brand, and founder at tastemaker label initiatives moscow records, moss co. and arkityp, he is an artist very much in control of his rise. the record opens with confusion, an out and out anthem which has been tearing up dance floors across the globe all summer. a trademark bassline drives the track forward as stabs build, tight percussion cuts through and a repeating vocal enters. then when the track drops it shifts the mood completely, causing any dance floor to bump uncontrollably. dos equis is something different altogether. minimalistic percussion and a tight sub lay the foundations for a funky bass guitar line. warming pads meet rhodes keys and out of nowhere a beautifully subtle vocal line appears. as the track breaks down, a mind bending synth line takes the listener out of their state of reflection. the title track on the flip is a classic piece of groovy hamilton weaponry. a positive mood that bounces along to a whispering voice in the background. the track develops as lush chords permeate the groove, soaking the dance floor in the last of the summer sun to create a euphoric crescendo.

pierre bastien is a french legend that has collaborated with artists such as robert wyatt, jac berrocal and jaki liebezeit, to name just a few. he is also very well known for his compositions based on home-made mechanical instruments, designed and constructed by bastien himself. pure diy. using these instruments he would create a heady experimental mix incorporating poetry and some far-out music, all in all very intriguing and original indeed. needless to say when the notion of pierre bastien and versatile records potentially making a project together arose, it was a total honour! throw into the mix esteemed electro-acoustic composer eddie ladoire and now we ve really got something interesting. eddie and pierre met when they appeared on the same concert bill together and they decided to collaborate further with versatile being the platform for the fruits of this particular project. the original version of phantom dance is a beautiful piece where bastien plays a trumpet into some water blended with electronic drums and mellow organs lines, creating an otherworldly, subterranean jazz vibe for the freaks. suzanne kraft, the la native / amsterdam based producer turns the original into some mechanical broken funk vibes while rotterdam s oceanic delivers 2 fresh, reimagined versions. one for for the club with a strong afro beat feel while the other one is a slower affair for the after hours. both mixes bringing something new to the table. a truly original and interesting release from some very talented people, for those with open ears and open minds!

although rico puestel has been producing since 2005, he still seems to be something of an insider tip. since caravel though, his august release on cocoon recordings, things have taken a dramatic turn with puestel currently enjoying man of the moment status, especially when it comes to progressive techno and peak time action on the dance floor.

catherine ringer needs no introduction. shes the woman who created an inimitable, genre-defying personality who, along with her group les rita mitsouko, had a huge effect on the french pop music scene in the 80s right through to the noughties. in may 2011, she released her first proper solo album, ringn roll. ringer took the magic of ritas roots but towards something with a more music-hall leaning at its core. after a breath-taking dalliance in plaza francia alongside two founding members of gotan project, whereby she stepped into the shoes of a tango dancer, oozing elegance and sensuality, catherine is now back with a second album, chroniques et fantaisies.

the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel aviv�s mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica), i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata � i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. it�s a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood, and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them, each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day, in a small studio shack in addis ababa.

after some succesful releases by struktur, the time has come to step into the world of the vinyl medium. struktur has something special for its first vinyl release. schuw is an enigmatic duo from amsterdam focussed on shaky techno and hip-dislocating meta dance. after releasing tracks on tape and cd, schuw complete the physical trinity with the vinyl release of the rasza vega ep. the a-side features title track rasza vega - one of their most precious and well-known gems known for its harsh drums and colourful chords. it is accompanied by purple knives, which provides a fresh and eclectic take on contemporary techno, reflecting their ever-growing synthesis and endless inner divergence. the b-side consists of the highly explosive blacksmith, inspired by traditional japanese drum patterns and western industrialism. grieche delivers a formidable remix of blacksmith, contributing a minimalized and hypnotizing contrast to complete the already heavily divers selection.

if you are wondering what the artist wanted to tell you by choosing this title, we will give you a small hint: it�s a cynical statement on something that for sure every party promoter has experienced at some point. the rest, we will leave up to your imagination� in real life, there�s no mercy � neither is when it comes to the sound of this new snork release by syntax error. the four new tracks with meaningful names are not only a social criticism and another artistic processing of the current development of the techno scene, but also a classic syntax error: rough, tricky and good to groove. each track stands on its own, telling another story. �collateral cosmopolitan� is a straight forward piece with a highly memorable beat talking about the uniformity that is creeping in the waiting lines of more and more techno clubs. �i wear my grandpa�s glasses� presents a totally dodgy sound, which might be a little oldschool and even a little irritating � just like some fashion items you encounter on today�s big city streets. �no fog is no solution� is a tight song that definitely needs some good fog and a harsh strobe. and finally, the last track sounds like a futuristic fairy tale from outer space looking on the world as if it is a �society bathysphere�.

dj haus ever-expanding deviant house music empire continues to impress with another installment of house crime, this time committed by szch. the 12inch kicks off with the fast and freaky girl i neva which borders on juke levels of nagging sample chops, before the script gets crumpled up and tossed at the bin with the wonderfully scruffy rave deconstruction of peugeot 106 at sunrise (pingers mix). unconditional (edit) brings something a little smoother to the mix, although that underlying weirdness that comes with house crime releases is still lurking in the wings. ukljucen ti je blutut finishes the ep off in a rowdy yet reflective style long may the strange tale of house crime continue.

snazzy trax drops out finest house sounds

optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin�s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven�t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

30drop records presents the first release of close encounters, the newest and the final concurrent collection of the label. four tracks, four artists and one common goal. the proposal is based on feasible, or better said, future encounters with extraterrestial beings or civilizations from outer space. the idea behind the whole work is to construct a conceptually and musically self-sufficient bundle of tracks developed by several creatives. on this case, dj surgeles, jeroen search, 30drop itself and another label s member, oryx 9, are the manufacturers of this first chapter. dj surgeles has a solid career as dj and producer with, for instance, his releases on something in the sky, the captivating and exquisite label of jeff mills. jeroen search is another well known talented producer with a large discography behind him that opens the ep with a steadfast cosmic shot, -aeon-. -umbra-, a spacey on a firm body track by dj surgeles, takes over from. on the b side, 30drop drops us to a -lunar mission- launched directly from the dance floor and, finally, oryx 9 invites us to a psychedelic floating experience on a distant galaxy -black market-. first contact ep is a massive set of sci-fi techno cuts that you should not miss it!

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective �bwp experiments� to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to �personal space invader� in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. �message in a box� and �rising star� were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public�s ears. if i had to describe sebastian�s output, i�d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call �space opera techno�. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds � and that�s what makes his work so unique!

following a string of remixes throughout 2016, and one of her busiest summers on the road, cassy is rounding off the year on a high. enter �kwench records�, a collaborative imprint she has created to represent honest and upfront house music. the remit is simple, on each release two or more artists will collaborate on ep original material, with a different artist joining the package on remix duty. they must not be afraid to experiment, nor do what comes naturally to them. and above all, trust in themselves and their instincts. this is something cassy has proudly learned to master over her dj career, and she now wishes to put out records in a creative space that encourages this approach. for the first release, cassy has called in one of her favourite house music producers, canada based demuir, to collaborate with her. demuir�s �derrick does disco� ep which came out on great lakes audio in 2016 was a favorite in cassy�s sets throughout that year, even making it onto her mixmag presents cd �let�s talk about donna�, which accompanied her cover in june. there are three original cuts on the package, and as a special treat for the first release, cassy is holding back the incredible remix package until later this year.

some might say jordan fields is one of the most criminally underappreciated figures to rise out of chicago in the late 90s, not for people who know what s what though. after a career spanning more than 20 years he has established himself as one of the key figures of the underground. coming out of where everything started, chicago, jordan released records on a handful of key labels like catalyst, track mode, som underground, mood groove, maffia. he did not stop there and today he is still releasing bangers having never lost that magic touch that has kept him firmly grounded on the purest form of the underground, and that, after more than 20 years is pretty much unheard of. when we first contacted jordan we wanted to go back to where it all started, we wanted to be transported to late 90s chicago, to a time where it was all about the dance floor, when tracks meant something more than songs, when purely club-oriented music was the purest form of the underground. to be honest we were not expecting to get exactly what we wanted straight away, he immediately sent us a collection of tools straight out of dat tapes he had, going all the way back to the 90s and early 2000s, so yeah to say that we are excited with this release would be a huge understatement. this is a collection of tools meant for the dancefloor, not reminiscent of some gone by era, these are the real deal, made by a true master, 20 years ago, for the future.

elysium erschien 2012 und offenbarte eine weiterentwicklung im sound und in der musikalischen entwicklung der pet shop boys. der kompositionsprozess begann, als die pet shop boys mit take that auf tour waren, einige tracks entstanden sogar schon im jahr 2008.
das album wurde gemeinsam von den pet shop boys und andrew dawson produziert, der als soundingenieur viel an kanye wests album »808s & heartbreaks« mitgearbeitet hatte � ein album von dem neil tennant damals »leicht besessen« war. die düstere atmosphäre in den texten von elysium spiegelt sich im sound des albums wider.
neil tennant: »es ist einerseits sehr �deep� im sound � es hat eine menge sub-bass � aber es ist auch tiefgehend, was die inhaltlichen themen betrifft und die art, wie sie formuliert werden. aber ich finde, es ist das schönste album der pet shop boys.«

die wiederveröffentlichung von -the taste of tg - a beginner�s guide to the music of throbbing gristle- fasst das schaffen von throbbing gristle eindrucksvoll zusammen, erscheint erstmals auf (rotem) vinyl als doppel-lp im klappcover inklusive downloadcode. die sammlung umfasst, wie im original, tracks von verschiedenen tg-alben, live-aufnahmen und wird im rahmen dieser veröffentlichung durch den song -almost a kiss- bereichert.

�i�ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i�d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there�s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we�ve succeeded.

for the 4th release from our beloved ourselves they ve once again invited a group of friends to serve us up a healthy dose of tasty house and disco. this time, originaltracks from luvless, snacks, siggatunez und jan ketel are on the menu. &#8203,,,, for starters we have luvless from leipzig whose prepared a floor stomper with a side of heavy drums paired with a warm chords- and stringsounds and a groovy bassline...completely love. the berlin duo snacks appear for the first time on ourselves with their track sisters . a delicious disco snack that sounds like an effortless kitchen jam with an extremely funky aftertaste - you re tastebuds will be dancing. hand played bass sprinkled over percussion, guitar licks and building up synths....hopefully you like your snacks authentic...they muste be true musicians...they are!! the one love disco & funk and the other jazz...so does siggatunez. he cuts us up a vibraphonline and sends it on the chase with a chord so delectably deep that not even the side of fat drums can keep up with the bounce and speed it creates but finally gets it and breaks down the club. jan ketel has prepared a desert that at first, tastes like a mere groovy tool but it soon opens up into something bigger and more hectic. it s like you gotta check in at charles de gaulle while in anothher moment the unmistakable flavour of a lush warm rhodes appears...a timeless flavour, and one that you ll never forget.

a story about a man separated from his group of travellers, lost in the amazon rainforest. he comes across a small settlement inhabited by people of a completely different mindset and way of living. they take him in and show him how to look at the world in an alternative way, which evokes an incredible revelation in him. he then goes off into the wilderness alone in search of his comrades, and everything is completely different to how he first perceived. this is extremely overwhelming and euphoric. he eventually finds himself at the top of a gigantic tree that stands tall as the sky, right at the crest of a majestic waterfall. as his journey peaks, he jumps from the tree into the water below. as he surfaces for air, things seem normal again. as is if it had never happened, but he knows something in him has changed. his companions are waiting at the bank of the river for him. he rejoins the group. as they head for basecamp, he realises there is no way that he will ever be able to express what he experienced that day. his journey is his own, and always will be.

code 718 aka iconic nyc dj danny tenaglia dropped this e2-e4 riffing classic back in the mists of 1992. manuel göttsching s original track would have been a staple of nyc clubs back then and would have featured in the warm up sets of jocks like tenaglia who favoured the longer, deeper sets as well as on the play-lists of institutional night-spots such as the loft and the garage. the track s influence on a whole era of dj s and producers that followed is immeasurable and across 3 sublime mixes tenaglia distills the magic of the original into something totally nyc and club-friendly without losing any of the göttsching magic, even managing to sprinkle a little grace jones in the mix with her fabulous i floated on a cloud vocal sample liberally applied. equinox takes us on a trip that is emotive, uplifting and warm. this is how house music is meant to sound, respectfully steeped in what preceded it yet moving forward in a fresh direction. another example of how on the money strictly rhythm were in their early days, classic after classic rolled out of the labels offices and us, the record buying legions, were / are better off for it! this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 3 mixes, unedited, as per the original release way back when. do not sleep.

eye o is the convergence of a few bay area stalwarts�kevin woodruff, formerly of tussle, and jason schwartz - and �deux o & debut� is their first studio-recorded public offering. the five-track, fifty-minute- long lp is a weaving journey through a pastiche of styles that�re all nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters of one another. kraut-rooted motorik drums reconfigure into more complicated math-y patterns, razor-sharp dance-punk guitars stretch out and dissolve into dubby post-rock atmospherics, synth loops you�d more commonly find in house tracks get grafted onto fuzzy psychedelic breakdowns, hard rock licks lock into chunky industrial grooves.
less for dancefloor destruction and more for trippy weekenders, the instrumental record manages to both be a focused, cerebral, conceptual hunk of fat to chew on and a spaced-out, intuitive ride through the cosmos. for use during those off-kilter small hours of the night just as much as it is vision quests and introspective weekends. it�s rare that an outpouring of so much can feel so simple and sublime.

straight out of sligo, ireland, brame & hamo have expertly produced some of the most effortless house music of the last few years. following acclaimed releases on labels such as dirt crew and heist, the duo now take full control with their debut release on a fresh, personal imprint, simply titled brame & hamo . b&h001, trants , is a versatile three-tracker that expertly captures the light and shade of the duo s production pallette. opening the ep, title-track trants (say it aloud to trace the inspiration), provides a hugely satisfying denouement. awash in a retro-futurist haze, flavours of early bleep techno, dusty drums and yes, outright trance flavours provide the ingredients for a euphoria-inducing trip that culminates in a melodic call to arms-in-the-air. things get much tougher throughout hurt you , which begins with an immediate strike of chunky percussion, jacking chi-town rhythms and an unapologetically menacing organ line. as the requisite vocal sample delivers emotive threat, the mood only gets darker still, delivering something akin to an outsider house rendition of a lost dance mania cut. finally, providing a soft landing with an early-doors on-the-floor heater, clarence lives up to it s smooth mix subtitle, as a lounging piano line gently gives way to vibrant sax and a soothing female vocal sample, while still maintaining a precise and irresistible groove for the club. expanding seamlessly on their reputation as djs and producers with an instinctive understanding of the genre, b&h001 is as soulful, tough and deeply satisfying of a house record as anything in brame & hamo s already impressive musical repertoire. indeed, here s your trants, now dance!
