demdike stare return to the lab with two extended new productions, inaugurating a series of untamed releases brought together under the testpressing banner. collision was recorded in late 2012 and is pretty much unlike anything you will have heard from demdike before, an intense high-frequency re-arrangement of jungle and noise, like a more brutal variant of the demdike-affiliated hate project, fed through a bank of analogue boxes and pedals, left to spin uncontrollably for 10 minutes before fading to black. misappropriation on the flip feeds off a different noise altogether, perched precariously between the mangled percussion you would most commonly associate with muslimgauze and the metallic clank of industry, a proper sunstroke riddim: angry and unforgiving.

when making a track, whatever his genre although in this case it would be electronic music, you can use reverbs, plugings, effects, loops, low bass or many simple and opportunist crookery or you can try a double somersault of talent, riskm and clubbing experimentation.

we are super stoked to have this killer ep out on local talk as we have been big fans of both c.r.s.t. and chesus productions for good while now. as these guys are down with both house music and the uk garage scene we get served an ep that combines the best of both styles. the result is a jacked up house release that would work equally well at the classic new jersey zanzibar club or in your dirty london basement club. the first three tracks (monster munch, newark and life) takes us on a deep and jackin house trip with a bouncy garage twist. but to stir things up a lil extra the last track (special) goes all disco with some soulful philly samples ... perfect for the southport weekender crews!

following the first release on my lit label is from the quite brilliantly named, bebop & rocksteady. this might be a new name to some but the guys behind this project are lukes anger & ben mallott. after playing catalunya throughout the year i felt this tune needed to see a release, its just so f***ing good. its response on the dancefloor was devastating. anyone who has seen me dj recently would remember this one in my set, it gets a massive reaction once that drop comes in. i will still be playing this all year, a proper slice of good wonky techno. -addison groove

knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.

format b are back in single business! after their successful high-sea album, the two allow themself a short holiday in the romantic sample land, boiling a hissing, primeval soup called drawn to a ravers potion with which obelix would have smashed up the romans for the next 2000 years to come. as solid as the a1 bomb, the b-side continues. spinning formatesque towards sonic speed, the title rise lives up to its honour while dusk finally underlines the obvious request of this 10th formatik chief-release fatness galore!

>stereotype< the second single from bristol industrial dub pioneer mark stewarts recent album the politics of envy gets reworked by a host of guest producers. hyper dub duo hype williams unravel stereotype into a fiercely breath taking dub-spectacle, unfolding three-quarters of the way through into a sky-bound grand finale. fred venturas italoconnection remix radiates with a cosmic-coated, sugary burst of popular 80s synth and as expected plenty of italo spark & flair. daniel b of front 242 pulls the originals fuse, and rewires it into what you would kinda imagine a 31st century electronica frankenstein would sound like. renowned techno figure perc gets angst and intense with a heavy, mechanical but beautifully crafted remix destined for the most no-nonsense of floors. chicago native chrissy murderbot channels the same high impact baltimore sound that you will find in machinedrum and schlachthofbronx productions, carrying us out guns blazing with ballistic footwork drum beat firing. finally, mark stewarts dub version of the song and a taster from his upcoming >exorcism of envy< lp to be released later in the autumn.

it has been a memorable year for the luv shack. release after release, props after props, watching the guys build on a solid foundations and take it up a notch each time. if you listen to their first release (again), and then this new release, you will see just how far they have travelled in such a small time frame. and yes, it started with a couple of mini compilations and eps to see what the reaction would be. the reaction was good, actually no, the reaction was great, the right jocks took to the guys and the early eps and hence since, the luv shack posse have been locked up in a studio ever since. they have been productive, and more to the point, excelling in that production. it is going to be a brilliant 2013.

the tale of the mythic pentaki mountain has been engraved on a two-sided circular piece of wax. the north face of the peak is steep, abrasive, and has been the subject of many legends in the region. it is said that whoever would manage to climb it would find a plateau, leading to a place called >the single source of truth<.

the >just for fun< ep starts with the title track just4fun, which in fact breathes fun and doesnt take itself too seriously. the funky and highly infectious keys and the butt shaking groove will remind you of a track that moodymann never made, but wishes he had. next comes unlimited01 with a joyful piano melody that would fit right into a french disco with a funkier version of alain delon behind the decks. still, the rhodes chords, the slow sexy groove, the vocal hooks will get you moving in no time. thang then goes into a more detroit beatdown direction with its deep chords and smooth pads. it creates a mellow atmosphere with an almost relaxed summer feeling. this is what a funky pimp would listen to on a night car drive. the ep ends with spiritual almost tribal rhythms. inspiration would be a nice soundtrack to a 70s orgy orchestrated by a groovy guru, surrounded by a magical circle of mystical dancers. over the top? sure, but the track would certainly get this party going.

minor rain is bringing the heat. this smoothly progressing clubtrack with a heavy impact is staggering and everything you would expect from a psych syndrome release. the new era is here. not the typical sound but a refreshing style within the labels genre. the b side is somewhat more mellow but still has that scorching bass. get rinsing!

repitch returns with a strong 3-tracker ep from the high-acclaimed british duo and, enhanced by a remix that comes from semantica s boss svreca. the release starts with a catchy techno track that got its strength in an endearing melody and a reassuring breath-alike sound that bring us positive vibes. in the a2, svreca puts the a1 track into a black tunnel. claustrophobic atmospheres, blind and disorienting sounds with a circular attitude that you ll not see the end. on the flip, the b1 would be the pick for those who want to destroy a dancefloor. straight and distorted beats are followed by sinister whistles, pressing and complex hi-hats layers culminating in a punishing melody.

after having blessed the world with >soarex< released on our sublabel irr (international records recordings), including a remix by ada, we would now like to welcome von spar to areal. and this time, the remix comes from no other than techno legend john tejada. with >jon voight<, the hamburg-based artists have created another epic masterpiece in line with their earlier electronic tracks: great emotions, melodies you will never forget... in other words: a track that will send something of a shiver down your spine. tejada, of austrian decent now living in the united states, shows full respect for the original version and comes up with a remix that has proven immensely effective on the dancefloor. it so effective that we still find ourselves awestruck in the studio. well, in the meantime, we have to admit that we went out to one or two parties, but only to find ourselves back in the studio again, still awestruck.

the son of a prominent nicaraguan politician, alfonso noel lovo was a choice target for the sandinista rebels who hijacked his homeward flight from miami in december of 1971, ultimately putting several rounds through the talented musicians torso and hand. after several years, and as many surgeries, he would break new ground on this psychedelic swirl of latin jazz and pan-american funk with his musical partner, percussionist jose chepito areas of santana fame. long unavailable, la gigantona has lived its forty years lost in the grooves of a single acetate. imagine a nicaraguan take on herbie hancocks afro-jazz masterpiece mwandishi with some of the most penetrating, left-field guitar youve never heard.

slowly building, soul-soothing, and disco-fuelled house with a nod to both the great masters from chicago and the new electronic breed. lisbon producer and lux resident ramboiage likes to take it slow to take things further. >del fuego< kicks off modestly with a simple beat and some light percussion, creating and eerie mood. but then some tasty, disco-fuelled heavy house kicks in, and the tune starts to roll unstoppable, riding on a horn hook. funky like a train, as the mighty equals would say. spanish om records darling al velilla steps up the pace a little bit and lets the original float over some tasty discohouse beats and eighties-flavoured synths.

unlucky for some but not it seems you or us, dot013 comes comprised of a hat trick of deep and sultry, some would say rnb flavoured slow jams, made for those sexier evenings when you feel the urge to want to nod your head, wine your body and give those hips something of a work out as opposed to just pointing haphazardly to the sky whilst hopping between legs and occasionally pulling your best ooooh listen to that bass line face. though those evenings clearly have their place as well.

nao katafuchi is a new york based japanese artist. living in lower manhattan for more that 20 years, nao has made an internationally interesting mini album lost somewhere between the future and the past. all of the music was made using a semi modern groovebox, guitar, and voice. this musical combination created a new wave cyberpop atmosphere that would not be out of place in a bar in liquid sky, blade runner, or total recall. trashy japanese retro-future pop out of new york city!

this twentieth 3024 release is by my friend trevino. i am particularly proud to put this out because it was trevino (aka marcus intalex), who signed my very first tracks and gave me my break back in 2005 (a 12 inch called get down on his label revolve:r). in the last two years he has started taking his techno more seriously, writing new tracks at a very fast pace. i am glad people are taking notice of his music cos he is the real deal and it was tough picking tracks for this release cos he is making so many! ultimately we chose four that would clearly showcase marcus different sides and styles. so, seven years after my >get down<, i am proudly presenting the mighty trevino with his >tactical manoeuvre ep<.

tone control music proudly introduces our new signing thatmanmonkz. this debut ep, the man explores detroit inspired deep house with jazz, disco and soul influences apparent throughout. several tracks feature vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, pete simpson (sunburst band) while title track, the man takes a heavier sampler/drum machine based route for darker tastes. ross orton (arctic monkeys/m.i.a.) helps out on mix duties to complete this steel city showcase.

total control dislocate expectations with this inaugural home loan records 12 inch. not the charged up paranoid vox/guitar/drums combo that we have become accustomed to through their visceral live shows - instead men with machines producing pensive proto-tech experiments and tense industrial wave. includes the original version of carpet rash which was re-recorded in full band mode for henge beat, and two previously unreleased immersive rhythm tracks formed through collaboration between guitarist mikey young and drummer james vinciguerra. vinciguerra would fire deranged beats down the hole while young would jam over them, watching waves in a trance from his perch at phillip island. on the flip we find two reconstructions from home loan manager michael ozone. carpet rash receives the club re-contextualisation with ozone fully utilising its penetrating synth hook, while new age hop climbs the arabic scale.

if the black monolith tycho magnetic anomaly one from stanley kubricks classic 2001 felt like partying, he would be throwing his rocks in the air to the vibes from barnt, even without having arms or legs. it is probably because is this what they were born for? is not the first time the dj, producer and co-founder of magazine (barnt, not the monolith) orchestrates his profound knowledge of true cosmic sound design in the most convincing manner.

hidden recordings presents the perfect soundtrack for the chilly, darker days of october. the month conjures thoughts of halloween and with it scenes of eerie, grim, and shadowy landscapes. it is the perfect time to showcase the latest addition to the hidden recordings family, american techno producer memnok who has become widely known for his ethereal sound full of heady grooves and self-reflective moments. on his debut his range includes spooky and gritty cinematic strains that would make alfred hitchcock proud. the pair of tracks each have a stand-out remix by techno fast risers – ascion who has worked in the past with labels such as drumcode, kiddaz, synewave, sleaze, and prosthetic pressings, and daegon who has graced releases from labels such as frucht, der hut, android musiq and silent steps.

eddie flashin fowlkes has always fancied himself as the forgotten producer of the detroit militia, a point which he explicitly points to on the title of this new release for the detroit wax imprint. >unsung hero< is, interestingly enough, quite noticeably un-detroit sounding, rolling on a killer funky 2-step groove and breezy keys which would slot in nicely against the mellower end of uk garage. on the flip >we need more< takes a stripped approach to house with some strange and submerged vocals from don q and restrained organ stabs, leaving it to the steadfast, bongo-laden groove to do most of the work. unsung hero indeed!

italian duo macromism has lately been making waves in the scene with their latest releases and they land now on be as one together with their long time friend dj kool dek, who already appeared on the labels tools for school vol.3 with take the rhythm ep the trio push things forward and show their versatility in the production room. the a-side hosts 2 cuts of proper groovy tech-house as you would expected from this collaboration. the b-side goes instead deeper and shows a side of the trio that yet was to explore. a 4 tracks ep that will surely find space in many djs bags.

the layabouts are anything but. 2012 marks leigh darlow and alex paschalis 10th year together and they have never been so in form or demand. their cast iron reputation for quality deep soulful house – house music forged with feeling and real purpose – continues, impressively, to grow.
rhythm master darlow and guitarist cum orchestrator paschali first met in 2001– in home city london – off the back of various projects in the same studio space. in time, their mutual love of expressive house music would lead to cult licks feelin right and the way i feel, sizzling material for kenny dope gonzalez and hot-to-trot remixes of dj spinna, da lata, dj spen and robert owens, and soulsearcher.

the close of the disco-era was far from the end of patrick adams career. in the 1980s he would lend his creative genius to such notable acts as salt n pepa, keith sweat and carol lynn townes. in the 1990s he helmed recordings by eric b. & rakim, paul lekakis and morris day. but the focus here is on the years he spent with peter brown and p&p. years where he was at his creative zenith as an arranger, composer, and performer. this is patrick adams >best of p&p records<.

nice price deal !!! borngräber & strüvers latest album represents a unique selection of chamber music compositions created in the period of 2000 through 2012. this denotes a new facet in the musical cosmos of the berliner duo, combining influences in the range of minimal music, classic and baroque, as well as the art of improvisation and pop culture. clouds can be considered as an album for fans of richard skelton, the caretaker and christian naujoks, but its distinctive work manages to reach a far wider audience. the album begins with the piece wellen (waves) for soprano and strings. the music is arranged and composed in a sort of wavy-shape, as the title suggests. it is a piece in the purest form of minimalism: without an end, without a beginning. the following track mobile pays homage to richard strauss don quixote, as musical parts and constantly changing atmospheres reconcile to create a sense of movement and mobility. last but not least, secret bells represents an instant composition as charles mingus would say, combining piano works and field recordings. clouds 1-3 were written for a virtual chamber orchestra and join together to give the album its leading name. these >clouds< differentiate themselves trough stylistic influences, ranging from classical to the latest in music.

rugged/troubles is a double a that lives up to its name in every way. if we wrote cliched press releases we would say the release >does what it says on the tin< but getdarker dont deal in hackneyed, meaningless sayings, we deal in undiluted, speaker-banging platters. and they dont bang much harder than this pair of purist party-starters. troubles follows. in more ways than one.

cazumas yume is a delicately balanced trip, from a broke, raw groove towards the light. striving upwards all the way, higher through beautifully orchestrated pads, strings and chants. if you flip the record, you will find envie by mr raoul k. if you know raouls sound, you would probably find this one to be on the clubbier tip. bulding from a groove of raouls patented percussive arrangement comes an electronic sandstorm, from tiny stabs through a full on and freaked out break where the mighty beat is totally lost. and then back at it! this is really one of those tracks that you cant help yourself from playing whenever control is lost on the dancefloor, a gateway to the crowds inner animal.
