all pieces are conceived and recorded between the end of 2015 and 2016 between amsterdam and tuscany. the path starts with cristallo di bismuto which is a low-tempo jam marked by dusty 80s drums and deep pads that transport you straight away in an underground nocturnal urban sci-fi scenario. i wish you could shelter me has within a powerful rolling bass part and a solid drum-machine pattern, dx7 s style keys with some romantic melancholic colors. oosterpark laguna is an exotic house groove with a lush pad and a sweet saxophone solo perfect for a sunny warm day. mare aperto is a nostalgic house tune inspired by the early chicago s piano house and the italian golden era of clubbing of the end of 80s early 90s. the release includes a label s sticker inside and a stamp on the inner sleeve.

one of the more unsung talents that came out of the gang starr foundation was the brooklyn-based duo group home, consisting of mcs lil dap and melachi the nutcracker. dap was first showcased on the gang starr posse cut “i’m the man,” on 1992’s daily operation, melachi appeared on “words from the nutcracker” from 1993’s hard to earn. the early group home song “so called friends” was also featured on 1993’s now-legendary gangstarr foundation sampler, which also gave the world jeru’s “come clean.” by 1995, dap and melachi had paid their dues and finally got their own full-length: livin’ proof. and it was everything that gang starr and any true school hip-hop fans could have wanted, produced almost entirely by dj premier (with two exceptions: “serious rap shit” helmed by guru himself, and “4 give my sins,” produced by jay-z mentor jaz-o (aka big jazz). beyond the album’s classic singles – “supa star,” “livin’ proof” and “suspended in time” – there are premier-overseen classics all over, including “the realness,” “inna citi life,” and “sacrifice.” in fact, many gang starr scholars agree that the beats on living proof are in the top 5 of all premier-produced albums – no small boast, but certainly hard to disprove.

south london ordnance debuts on parachute. the british producer marks his first release of 2017 with parallel window, a four track ep featuring three wrought-iron originals and remix from token & blueprint affiliate, sigha. driven and direct, the music marries rolling low end with high energy drum machine percussion and wide angle highs - for the most part eschewing anxious, heads-down austerity in favour of a more uplifting, trancelike approach - spread across multiple bpms. despite the heady, crushed finish - shifts in tone are subtle, developing over prolonged periods, with careful modulation drawing sounds in and out of the sonic hinterland sporadically to create a comfortable atmospheric balance between peak-time dance-floor urgency and hazy mid-set moments. on his remix, sigha hones in on this sentiment - lifting the caustic lead bassline from parallel window and augmenting it with trademark cavernous low end, skittering highs & a rolling lead arp to create a hypnotic, half-time dirge.

after kicking things off with sean thomas’ (cop envy) the weigh, sydney’s outer time inner space return with a collaborative ep from jon watts, the kind-hearted, go-to sound engineer of the sydney club and experimental music scene and otis label owner, hugh burridge (aka hubert clarke jr). as resident djs for otis’ sweet echoes parties and guests for some of sydney’s more open-minded club promoters, jon & hugh have developed their own style of warm up set, largely unrestrained by genre. another view is just an extension of this open approach to club music. there’s an obvious ode to bukem’s good looking records, a lopsided mpc jam that could have been written by a drunk ron trent, a club roller with uk broken beat at it’s heart and a spaced out, dream-scape dub from melbourne mate, rings around saturn (dan white) to round out the ep. the common thread, they’re keeping it deep.

having sprung into action with the sol explorer ep on girasole, william caycedo is back with a new selection of jams on the ever-developing slapfunk. as the label s remit for minimal house and techno broadens, we re treated to low slung leftfield beats on -booty call- before the peppier broken beat groove of -ain t no joke-. -creepin - and -g groove- head into more familiar territory for slapfunk fans, but there s still space for the crisp, laid back funk of -tales from the west- and the off-kilter jazzy vibes of -yes we do- thrown in for good measure.

r.o.s.h. returns with two anthemic uk-leaning 4/4 productions. following last year’s debut release on bristol’s drumz for eternity label, herts based r.o.s.h. broadens his release schedule via two tracks that establish a common thread of unique top end melodies coupled with swinging, uk funky indebted percussion and pure peak time atmospherics. ‘winona’s love (stranger things mix)’ launches with an audacious mixture of circling john carpenter synths and rolling ’09 era uk funky percussion coming across as one part london legend apple to two parts prime eighties repo man. honed berlin kick drums and low swung bass hits combine to create a constantly driving concoction of ceiling banging techno all tied together with the distinctive infectious synth work that’s fast becoming a r.o.s.h. staple. creating a fully fledged dance floor homage to netflix s most popular sleep competitor is the young producer’s raison d’etre across this release. ‘amg (a45 mix)’ goes in for the kill with rattling percussive stabs and tweaked woodblock snares winding up the drama before the rumbling techno breakout at the one minute mark. it s a return to the rude form of uk funky s heyday, with colossal amounts of sub and every element driven to a singular purpose, to move bodies in the dance.

torn is a new face to the samurai camp and our first signing from russia. a st petersburg native, torn has been developing over recent years into one of the most interesting producers in the half step community with his tracks featuring heavily in the sets of many of the scenes most prominent dj’s including homemade weapons, loxy, clarity & presha.
the grethen ep is a gateway to the torn sound. ‘stagnation’ is the most traditional drum and bass of the ep with it’s bouncing, grunting lurch. ’grethen’ goes down low and deep, while ‘self reflection’ is the tune bound to populate many dj sets with it’s tribal percussion. ‘insomnia’ ups the intensity with frantic, restless energy to close the ep. more torn music to come on samurai later in 2017.

2 classics on one 12 single, gems excavated from the deepest realms of the tk disco vaults.on side a we have former foxy frontman ishmael ish ledesma with his sublime esoteric disco cut from 1979 called don t stop , a deep, late night diamond of a track that will appeal to the more left-field disco lovers out there. don t stop has long been a favourite with the diggers with it s sweet vocals, synth heavy production and overall cosmic vibe. a beauty of a track indeed and one of tk s lesser known cuts. side b sees fusion guitarist john tropea s 1979 cosmic classic living in the jungle , a long time spin of dj s like daniele baldelli and dj harvey. infusing tropea s rock sensibilities with the throb of the disco dance-floor the track is a low slung, midtempo groover that touches all the right spots. overall, this essential double-header is a must have for all disco heads and left-field dj fiends.

the second ep by control remote finally drops with 3 stunning cuts destined to become phuture classics in years to come. the first ep was a strong seller for the shop and provided the footwork for this second ep to drop. ‘music’ on the a side gyrates a house groove with a moody man nod of guidance. this is one sure fire hot jam! on the flip we have the divine acid groove of ‘fragment of a sermon’ kicking of proceedings whilst riding locked in groove. ‘give my luv’ closes the ep off with a low rider house slide that leans to left whilst moving you to the right! this second ep by control remote sets the standard for others to follow. hotness personified!
