copenhagen’s echocord colour returns this august with stephen brown’s ‘power factor’ ep, featuring three originals from the uk techno stalwart. scottish producer stephen brown is a name synonymous with techno across the globe having been releasing material since the mid nineties on imprints such as derrick may’s transmat, subject detroit, skudge records, ben sims’ theory and holland’s djax up beats amongst many more. here we see brown join the roster of echocord’s sub-label colour, slotting him in alongside the likes of mike dehnert, nick hö,,,ppner, luke hess and deadbeat in the back- catalogue. up first on the release is ‘sandtext’, a stripped-back dubbed out opening cut fuelled by a robust kick and minute percussive hits running alongside a sturdy sub bass drive and spiralling dub stabs before ‘wet’ takes things even deeper via muted kicks, shuffling shakers and delayed synth chords. ‘back stroke’ then rounds out the release with an amalgamation of airy reverberated stab hits, rumbling low end pulsations and a thunderous kick drum to once again create an understated, hypnotic composition.
lf rmx is a new series, exclusively featuring edits and remixes originally made by len faki for use in his own dj sets. now releasing them to a wider audience, the second edition presents two complementary contrasting versions of deep in by stephen brown. sticking to the strengths of the source material, faki s sleek polish makes the centerpiece acid bassline and playful cut-up vocal stand out from the mix even more. already quite a force to begin with, the momentum only keeps growing as oldschool drum breaks and additional percussion roll in. the original s linear progression is traded for murky, modulating analog squelches on the deepspace mix, turning the tune into a dubby late-night groover, which still holds some surpises in store. as with all releases of the non-profit platform that is lf rmx, the proceeds of this record will be forwarded to the berlin organization straßenkinder e.v. to be used in actions against child poverty.

burnski and jon woodall s constant sound label continues to reach skywards following the formers essential dna album, welcoming the ever-reliable laura jones and stephen brown into the mix with a collaborative effort that matches club precision with machine soul in equal measure. -crystalline- works around detroit motifs to great effect, while -concave- ramps up the swing factor for a spacey number that gets fancy with the fx. -pv- too does a fine job of making the synths ping around the mix with a jammed-out feel, while endian delivers a remix of -nothing lost- that leans on berlin techno dynamics while injecting some colour into the situation.

following his recent collaborations with ai records, electronique.it, and icon of desire, passenger finally comes back to eclipsemusic to release a new 12 vinyl record, titled chord abuse ep. the release takes off with solar flare, one of passengers most airy, housey and positive works till now, with its melodic sequence and uplifting atmosphere. on the same side of the 12 inch, surface debris de-construct the classic techno elements to build an abstract, moody, hyper-cynetic slice of futuristic techno. on side b solar flare gets then a special remix treatment by stephen brown, one of the most personal and notable european techno producers: the result is a tight, swinging rework of tiny slices of the original, turning the track into a classic techno builder..
son: a highly percussive track that builds up from a simple hollow kick to something special that those on the dance floor will appreciate. on top is a dollop of filtered chords that move back and forth.
gate 5: razor sharp chords combined with a compressed drum beat and percussion.

two killer detroit-tracks by stephen brown on his first appearance on heliocentric music. releasing outstanding techno for the last 16 years and appearing on labels such as transmat, djax-up and music man, stephen rarely needs any introduction. the record starts with >hmi<, a very deep dancefloor-experience with lots of spheric sounds, which make the track perfect for the crowd as well as for home-listerners. >my harmony< is of such a beauty, that one simply has to listen. ambient-soundscapes and electro-drummings are the key here and take the listener on a truly fantastic journey!
second part of the much talked-about universal consciousness series. on one side, stephen brown, the artist responsible for some of the best releases on derrick mays transmat label, makes his 2010 comeback with an uncompromising and stunningly beautiful piece of detroit techno. on the flipside, club lonely, a these days in-house production moniker for jam sessions that happened in the labels studio between friends, presents a tribute to n.y club shelter. the track focuses on a bassline driven groove in timmy regisford fashion while on the b2 the vocals are muted for those who would like to use the track as a tool. space techno meets n.y dancers. universal consciousness
stephen brown is a true techno legend after his releases on labels like transmat, djax up beats, soma and subject detroit. his classic my drums record on the legendary belgian diki label is now finally available again!
two of the uks most formidable names in techno step into the ring for a head to head on theory. stephen brown is a man who certainly needs no introduction, and his knack of channeling the best of detroit innovation and adding his own distinct flavours shows no sign of letting up. on >fuego< and >polar< brown takes us further into the jacking zone, his signature lush melodies driving up the rear until they envelope the tracks in a haze of deep and emotive vibrations, but never letting up on the tough rhythms. ben sims is drafted in to remix both tracks, leaving slicing shards of sound and roughing up the beat on his remix of >polar<, before delving into a hard-funk take of >fuego<. big business from two keepers of the true techno flame.

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.
second release on rennie fosters vinyl label, rf trax, is a monster of a dj cut, with homage to the robert hoods floorplan releases, but with rfs unique style.
made from jacking drums, an unusual live soul sample, and a relentless, minimal arrangement make this a very hot dj tool. adding to that is three high quality remixes from techno don, stephen brown, detroits antwon faulkner, and a deeper house vibe by cloudmaster weed.
artwork for rf trax is created by vancouver based artist vasho pekar. the unusual method of creation involves photographing projected images and text onto objects, there is no photoshop involved in these images, they are each an unaltered photograph.
