the first track on annas debut ep for novamute , razor was born while playing with her roland mks-80, a synth from 1985 and one of annas favourites. you can hear the fat, juicy sound on the breakdown and ever evolving throughout. the track has already been getting a great reaction when played out in her sets. escapism plays with trippy arpeggios that lay down the atmosphere for the whole track, it feels really dense and trippy but still powerful, making use of heavier drum sounds for the groove. the last track on the ep dreamweaver, is a simple track that always works well on the dance floor. anna reworked this track many times before deciding to strip down the beat and focus on the final sequence, sometimes the simple ideas are the ones that work the best.

mihai popescu kicks off a new label, steppin motion records, with two of his own brilliant tracks. the romanian artist has been a key part of the scene since 2012, releasing on labels like soulsity, rora and bass culture. he has a slick electronic sound that is here for all to here on these two new cuts.

steppin motion is a record label based in paris and managed by swoop. it aims to promote music as an art, as something beautiful that gets your body and soul in motion. this first ep is in two parts, showcasing both sides of the label: the first part is the most dance oriented, whereas the second part will be more soul / beauty oriented. the amazing artwork comes from vesod, who is an italian street-artist painter from turin.

selfsuficient is first and is ten minutes of slippery house music with lovely chords and melodies all making for a warm and infectious groove. it is colourful, loose and rhythmic stuff that oozes a futuristic sense of soul. neasteptat is deeper, with rubbery drums and woodpecker like sounds all weaving round each other to cast a spell on those who hear it.

lumberjacks in hell welcomes deep house vet andy compton and shamrock for a trip into plush disco, laid back funk and more besides. bunny chow was reportedly recorded in south africa, and features the vocal talents of asli on a number of the tracks. you can certainly hear the afro influence creeping into the simmering groove of the title track, while aslis vocals shine through the clearest on the downtempo tones of everything is gravy. nifanyeje is another warm trip through afro disco replete with noodling guitar lines and a crisp drum machine beat, while roga mziki ends the record on a high note with a final blast of that infectious, sunkissed sound the pair have clearly mastered on their musical adventure

tim (aka jean marie tiam) and the sadly departed maurice foty who died in 2011. the musical cousins hails from bafoussam in cameroon. their signature vocal harmony sound may be the first thing you hear, however they also have produced a host of funkiest african funk around. they sing in their native language ngomâlah, as well as duala and english.

part two of the ep features the motor city drum ensemble remix, and the original “in a silent mix” version from 1999, a track out of its time when released on allen’s sole record “black voices”. a long serving dekmantel veteran, danilo plessow was there from the start. after compiling the first selector’s compilation last year, mcde turns tony allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. the final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear mcde play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. the organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete motor city style.

ndatl continues with new hot tracks from the label’s creator kai alcé. while mr alcé has been remixing on the regular, his own output has been minimal so it’s refreshing to hear new material from the man himself. alcé offers up 4 dope tracks “back in this shit” the title track reminiscent of 90’s with updated flavor “not” with it’s warm keys & driving drums, the sheed’s move ft rasheed ali on flute is underground like only mr alcé can provide & “jam tight” is a detroit flavored burner! this 12&#8243,,,, has something for all the vinyl pushers out there!

verdant recordings 3rd ep is a collaboration between the rising talent aos and sonitus eco. a debut release on vinyl for aos who has previously released digitally on blankstairs with the enchanting 90 east minialbum. sonitus eco should be well know for his own harr label and for his majestic ambient and dub techno projects with silent season. on this release both bring their love of deep atmospheric and melodic techno for two original works which are then reconstructed by each other. its fascinating to hear how these tracks reshape the original signatures. an ep that reaches for the stars and yet is subtly introspective and melancholy. 180g pressing an once again the artwork features the beautiful colours of sophie o leary.

a year on from luigi tozzi and label head dino sabatinis collaborative manticora ep, outis return with a striking, singular solo work from tozzi. ecate ep sees the roman producer bringing three distinct slices of techno, each with its own set of subtleties and the crystal, adept sound design that defines tozzi’s work. spanning the a-side is ecate. this title track is rolling and hypnotic, with muscular, percussive bass. throughout the track, angelic chords come and go, washing the listener in euphoria. alongside, we hear a disorienting melody, grounded by the lightly swung four to the floor kick that gives this track an infectious groove. the flip opens with leto, which immediately defines itself as a club track with an unbroken but evolving set of percussion and a weighty kick. its around this kick that other elements build. we hear long, ringing, resonant string sounds, and a bell like melody morph and unfold as other percussive components come and go. the track falls away into atmospheric eeriness, which perfectly sets the stage for the eps finale. esperedes swung, panning drums give it a disorienting feeling of otherworldliness from the get go. this is before youre greeted by an alien, slightly dubbed out melody and a hanting backing drone that feels like a reference (perhaps in opposition) to the angelic chords of the eps first track. its on this closing track that tozzis delicate, expert sound design best shines through, and really has to be heard to be understood.

bawrut has had an amazing couple of years. since kicking our label off back in 2015 with the modern acid classic ciquita (12inches of which will now set you back silly money on discogs), the madrid-based producer has gone from strength to strength. last year saw him tear down sets at sonar and farr festivals, drop a feted new ep on hard fist records, and have his music soundtrack numerous adverts for fabric events. other djs have been quick to show their appreciation, and bawrut’s unique appeal can be seen in how far and wide across the spectrum his music has featured. optimo, avalon emerson, patrick topping, jackmaster, artwork, andrew weatherall and many more have all supported heavily. were proud to kickstart bawrut’s 2018 with 4x4, a brand new ep of typically leftfield bangers. these four tracks come on like a whirlwind journey through a bawrut dj set, with something for every time of the night. ghettoscar fuses african chants with burbling acid, building the kind of goodtime dancefloor warmth bawrut is famed for. more cowbell does exactly what you’d expect, giving djs a glorious, cowbell-powered disco bomb that fuses the spirit of incredible bongo band with classic nyc house. i hear voices is a crazy ride, with an expertly cut up vocal sample repurposed into a weird, descending riff that’s quite unlike anything else out there. throw in bawrut’s trademark kitbag of carnival whistles, rattling latin percussion and a creeping acid line that works itself up into a soul-salving joy and youve got a modern classic on your hands. finally, lead track three sounds is probably bawruts biggest moment to date, a peak time jacking techno monster built from the most minimal of elements - drums, claps, a one note bass squelch and a tom drum gone wild. bawrut takes this tom sound and treats it like a 303, pushing far off the rails, working it up and up, twisting it through pitch and frequency like a man possessed, raising its pressure til it tears off the roof. theres no one else making techno quite like it - and you can expect dancefloors to be going crazy to the mania of three sounds throughout 2018 so there you have it - four more missives from the wizard of madrid. play em loud.

finnish band jesse makes unsentimental and innovative music. what you hear on “fluids”, released as a 12 inch picture disc album on hoga nord rekords, is the sounds of four creative brains’ journey into the music universe of the future. their music is influenced by earth and space - jesse’s astral and cosmic disco is prospective, totally boundless, and vibrant of life and blood. the production sounds luxurious and helps the psychedelic qualities to shine through the sound.

cosmic bridge kicks off 2018 with an energetic four-track ep full of fresh ideas. proc fiskal is the alias of 21-year-old joe powers, an edinburgh native who fell in love with uk dance music and the various strains of the hardcore continuum thanks to youtube. he refined these inspirations at 160 bpm and began to receive airplay from the likes of grime veteran dj spooky. a debut ep for hyperdub followed in 2017, speeding grime to jungle tempos for fascinating results. these unique tracks caught the ears of om unit leading to the hello boss ep, on which proc fiskal further explores the sweet spot between dark garage, grime and ragga jungle.

the second intergraded is a four tracker from hi & saberhaegen, the brainchild of two producer/djs from scotland and ireland respectively. they first met midland at a gig at sneaky petes in edinburgh where they booked him to play at the club (where they also hold a residency). having previously played their music on anthony naples proibito and huntleys and palmers he was keen to hear what else they had been working on. what followed was selection of tracks that ended up being distilled down to the light on leaves ep. without relying on superlatives and detailed track by track descriptions, its an amazing record that reveals itself with every listen and one we are really proud to have on the label.

paper tree sneaked out into the world for a moment a few years back and then vanished. lee burridge loved the track so much that he continued to harass rebelski, sometimes standing outside his window in the flower bed, for weeks on end until he finally agreed to let lee release it on all day i dream. not content with a single track lee went back to rebelskis garden and tapped on the window repeatedly until he agreed to make some more beautiful tracks. obviously pestering producers in this manner bares fruit. the paper tree ep ranges from a beautiful solitary solo piano piece that wouldn t be amiss in a british period piece drama where someone dies unexpectedly leaving the survivors to deal with it, all the while maintaining their stiff upper lip. fly the kite made us want to go outside and do just that. so we did. it was epic. circles and squares joins paper tree as one of those dance floor moments best experienced with ones eyes closed. myriad is the sound of a young lady robots jewelry box (yes, we predict robots will be wearing jewelry in the future) that she(bot) pines to hear when she s all grown up and rusty. omoshiroi is, well, its just so damn pretty. good work rebelski. good work.

following the success in 2017 of the koharu kisaragi/ryuichi sakamoto collaboration neo-plant, uk label lag records continues its revival of vintage electronic esoterica with kissh&#333,, tennyo, the 1984 lp by joe hisaishi, premier film composer of japan. whilst known worldwide for his elegiac scores to studio ghibli classics like princess mononoke and spirited away, it s a different kind of soundtrack behind kissh&#333,, tennyo, intended as it was to be a musical accompaniment to an 80s manga of the same name. it s also a showcase of hisaishi s lesser known talents as an electronic musician, shortly before he became composer of choice for world-renowned directors such as hayao miyazaki and takeshi kitano. on kissh&#333,, tennyo we hear hisaishi unleash synth arpeggios with all the suspense of a giallo horror. his cold minimalist ambience evokes the likes of terry riley. tracks like &#34880,,,,,,,,,&#12398,,,,,,,,,&#25239,,,,,,,,,&#20105,,,,,,,,, ( blood feud ) meanwhile lighten the mood, running at car chase speed with the bounce of early ymo. all in all, befittingly beguiling music for the cartoon tale of a modern femme fatale who has the powers of an ancient deity (the eponymous kissh&#333,,,,,,,,, tennyo or &#21513,,,,,,,,,&#31077,,,,,,,,,&#22825,,,,,,,,,&#22899,,,,,,,,, , to use the album s japanese title). in the same spirit of the manga, lag records have combined the old with the new on kissh&#333,,,,,,,,, tennyo. licensed by tokuma japan communications, the original release from classic anime label animage comes with new artwork by luna monogatari, and a remastering courtesy of jerome schmitt at the airlab. a download card and poster will be included with the gatefold. lp which comes on standard black vinyl.

rumours believes that the only way to harmony is by allowing yourself to be extreme in every way. after listening to megamix for the first time, the origin of the name reveals itself after every track you hear. rumours are hannah vandenbussche and jonas boermans (both active at monami), birds-singer pieter-jan cools and brutus drummer stefanie mannaerts. they joined forces a few years ago to produce something they call sjamaanhop. a self-invented term that best can be defined as an enchanting combination of techno and trip hop. it’s as if the knife and crystal castles suddenly found the ideal pool partners in four tet and nosaj thing. where rumours is known for their dark, fast paced and heartfelt live sets, they show they ve got more to them in their first studio album. influences from every corner creep into the songs, which makes it a quiet unusual, but balanced album. a mishmash of melancholy (every cry for help needs a saving anthem), a certain tint of sadness and that one urgent place in our hearts that we call desire. for the visual aspect of the album, the spanish party island ibiza was an obvious choice for the band. the destination was not only a refuge, it was a place where hope and grief can exist together.

m-twelve is a new collaboration between tortured and electrix label owner, billy nasty and nick dunton of surface records, 65d mavericks fame and more recently, poverty is violence label. taking their name, m-twelve, from the iconic fred perry t-shirt, the pair decided to combine forces based on a love of techno and electro, their strong friendship and many late night conversations in the back rooms of various nightclubs. they started recording together last year and the ‘apocalypse in paradise ep’ is the first signs of their monthly meetings at what’s been dubbed, “dunton abbey studios”. the ep features their two original cuts of beautifully crafted emotional electro, the warm and glittering ‘all the things’ and ‘time spent’ with it’s deep narrative and tough machine groove. in addition, remixes of ‘time spent’ come from sync 24 (scand / cultivated electronics) who delivers an energetically fuelled reworking and electro veterans, transparent sound with a stripped and stomping acidic version. billy and nick have also just started work on remixes for tracks by london modular alliance and mr velcro fastener, so expect to hear more of their m-twelve work over the coming months.

mood to move ep is a six-part musical retrospect into the work of veteran japanese house producer takecha, the little-known artist has been sporadically releasing analogue house on his own gwm imprint since the mid-90s, however trouble maker had only recently discovered his works and were dying to hear more. the music he sent was far too good to remain unheard, so we twisted the little-known maestro’s arm and managed to grab a selection of six unreleased and never before heard cuts for your audio pleasure. created between 1995-2000, these musical gems were left dormant on dat tapes in takechas basement - until now! with classic house being the flavour throughout, the high-quality production and deeply-resonant synth lines of each track leave an imprint that’s hard to forget. if this is your first time hearing takecha you certainly won’t be disappointed., released on 12 inch vinyl , shrinked wrapped
