label boss sasha carassi showcases his constant evolution in this three-track ep and soundsphere kicks things off with unmistakeable, mutating stabs intertwined with haunting background synths. starchild picks up from there with its rubber-band bassline and streamlined electronics, and introduces what can only be described as mutant sci-fi chords. for the closer, mr. carassi has put together the aptly-titled drop of soul in which trademarked synths pave the way for nostalgic arpeggios and dissonant electronics.

publicist is longtime producer/performer/musician sebastian thomson. his tracks approach house music from a darker angle, adding processed vocals and noise to a raw foundation that also takes cues from new beat, acid house, and detroit techno. when performing live publicist sequences the synths and not the drums, preferring to play an electronically treated drum kit in the middle of the dance floor. this adds an element of sweat, excitement and virtuosity not found in most electronic producer s live performances. sebastian thomson is also known as a founding member of post rock pioneers trans am and as the drummer of heavy metal innovators baroness. living in brooklyn by way of buenos aires, washington dc and london, publicist has spent the last four years touring europe extensively.

steve frisco, of serie limitee fame, brings us the latest bundle of hot tracks to hit wax classic in 2014. as the title suggests, steve takes us on a journey through low fidelity sounds and production techniques. think dark, moody, yet crunchy basement house tracks with inspiration taken from all over the u.s and the rest of the house world. it’s a generous offering as well. six whole dusty tunes for those diggers who are looking for something with a bit more range than another record of generic piano laden, house-by-numbers pieces that still seem to be flooding the record store shelves in 2014. the moods do vary from track to track, but they remain very reflective and almost melancholic at points. the title track, ‘adventure in lo-fi’, is the deepest of the lot with filtered chords, echoing claps and a sporadic kick pattern that often clears way for the track’s bass hits. now, compare that to ‘da brooklyn beat’. whilst the former had a distinct sunrise/sunset kind of feel to it, the latter is definitely more of a club affair. skippy snare hits and a strong organ lead the track on, and at the risk of utilizing very overused buzzwords such as ‘raw’ and ‘ruff’, this track, and the rest of the a-side for that matter, certainly captures that essence. stalwart wax classic fans will no doubt be picking this one up to add to their collection. however, i strongly recommend this ep as a jumping in point to the label for any newcomers out there

the sexiest dj duo on wheels steers their way back into the hearts of house music fans everywhere with -what you believe,- a 2-track vinyl-only ep. this sixth installment shows a different side of the duo... here, in contrast to their past vocal collaborations with corbu, gry and bob moses, they opt for a pair of lush dancefloor instrumentals, delivering their most dj-friendly package to date.

accompany the reissue of woo s into the heart of love, emotional rescue is releasing a limited 7inch featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in later form on their cd only, la luna album. with the original into the heart of love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from emotional rescue. therefore, this limited edition 7inch includes two of those ommited songs. the wistful english folk duet between mark ives and sue amor on make me tea and it s sibling on the album, a little long way. possibly woo s most straight forward folk song, make me tea is as the title imagines a very particular english poem. recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. however, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, magic in the dark that is worth the admission price alone. taken from the cd only album, la luna, the original s short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it s alternate demo form. a different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. the sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. mark s vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother clive, before clarinets duet to a yearning finale. woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. a one off to cherish.

number 3 on ruff draft comes from louis guilliaume. having met louis back in 2009 and followed his music since way before then, it was an exciting day when we received these tracks from him. known more for his harder edge techno productions on labels such as soundtravels, bio rhythm holland, teng, sd holland and a remix on skudge, here he edges slightly away from that harder sound. the tracks vary from deep, groovy and meandering house to a beatless soundscape reminiscent of early larkin and pullen to a powerful kick drum driven sermon.

following a double headed debut on our recent nasty rips comp. – a crisp remix of hackmans ‘ always’ and a fizzing solo outing -‘not afraid’, montreal producer reagan grey makes her full shifting peaks debut with a high grade 3 track ep, alongside 3 useful remixes. opener ‘owl’ featuring sandy duperval on vocals, takes a neat song of love and life and rolls it over a punchy ukg/house groove, adding classic sounding organ stabs and swingy rhythms, with a tight arrangement keeping things moving along. ‘feel the pressure’ features christie nelson on vocals, with an equally strong , r n’ b inflected song woven in and out of a looser, spacier arrangement, rgs snappy drums again underpin proceedings. not afraid reappears, having made friends along the way via it s nasty rips inclusion thanks to driving detroit-influenced synths, a pulsing bassline and sweet builds and drops. on the remix front, lukas ( future boogie ) keeps things simple on owl, with a fat, kick-lead groove and sparing use of the vox before drifting into a crowd-pleasing breakdown halfway through. benway (aka fast rising muscovite nphonix) takes swathes of the feel the pressure vocal for a ride over broken beats and a bass heavy backing, with hints of techno torque setting his pressurize mix apart from the similar de pressurize version.

a bold move to cover a daft punk record? perhaps but off msg and vocalist hadi create a respectful update of the oft overlooked romanthony penned finale to daft punks second album. too long is one side of vinyl and 6 minutes of classic infectious house music as uncomplicated as it is effective. sounding not unlike an early marshall jefferson / jungle wonz record. hadis vocal leads the way, underpinned by loose house beats, live tambourine, a when house was discos little brother bass line and analogue disco stabs that punctuate the space. strictly limited to 500 hand stickered, stamped and numbered with no repress. these will not hang around mastered by original two lone swordsman mr keith tenniswood.

this is an ep bristling with fresh house sounds and once again suggest that gipsy music is on its way to becoming an essential modern outlet.

sardinian born, berlin based producer hubble is known to create implicitly ethereal moods. his way to keep people off guard as well as making a musical commitment through long excursion is unique to him. on this ep titles la rencontre (eg. meeting), he crosses paths with his romanian friend tulbure.

here s something to stir the loins of any discerning disco dj: a studio hook-up between veteran producer felix dickinson (fresh from his much-loved outing on futureboogie recordings), horse meat disco and one-time dfa man (and renowned multi-instrumentalist) marcus marr. there s an additional contributor, too: a mystery (presumably big-name) vocalist whose talk-box heavy delivery sits somewhere between prince, george clinton and pharrell. the track itself is something of a summer anthem in the making - an immaculately produced p-funk jam with the additional benefit of a shuffling, house-friendly groove. no details on how many copies have been pressed, either way, you d be well advised to snap up a copy while you still can.

last year tornado wallace touched down at the esp institute with his thinking allowed ep, a slab of wax that proved pivotal in his musical aesthetic, beautifully complimenting our catalogue. he ups the ante further with circadia, his second 3-track ep that riffs on esp themes whilst sophisticatedly amplifying their character. the title track lays trance-like arpeggiated vocals over thunderous tropical toms, opening up into an epic group chant. time of nectar coasts along, blanketing us with soft pads and soothing pan pipes before jonny nashs palm-muted stratocaster makes its cameo. the essential house jam on the b-side, soft light, will no doubt pump its way through dance floors this summer, dont sleep!

demarzos sound is a meticulously crafted one. his toxic perfectionism and shrewd sense of rhythm lead him naturally to where he is today. his well-revised sets include anything from underground deep house to main room deep tech. after releases on hot creations, noir, glasgow underground or loulou records to name a few, arrives to sincopat with two secret weapons. holster is a cheeky but solid track which brings together groove and melody. analogue synths being added, it also presents changing voices all the way. for the remix, walker & royce take the deep way with a dry kick and sinister notes. pay attention to the astonishing breakdown. trigger is the second original track, in the same language than holster, and using some classic groovebox bullets. ramiro lopez, one of the sincopats golden boys, after his bedrock release, offers two fresh versions with different treatments.

a diverse and damaging three track ep from bone, exploring and exhibiting detroit techno musically, figuratively and spiritually. a1. here to stay (won t fade away) a nod to detroit as an ever-present - a marker by which others are measured, bone s first track on the detroit ep, here to stay (won t fade away) makes a statement above and beyond just being a fine example the music it refers to. the sumptuous melody that opens the track is accompanied by a substantial yet soft, almost warm, kick, a combination that somehow provides an atmosphere and depth way beyond merely the of the sum of its parts. more rolling percussion and drums are crisply ushered in before the here to stay (won t fade away) vocal begins looping over the composition. linear, straight up loops, grooves and rhythm give a consistent sense of railroad-esque motion atop of an ever-present vein of lush synth and melody. a track that is certainly here to stay. a2. detroit is ... soul with more of an emotional focus than symbolic this time, it s clear this one is from bone s heart. detroit is ... soul, ducks and weaves in the grey area between house and techno, the initial percussion that is brushed over the kick giving more of a house swing than a techno groove. the on/off, cut-and-dry synth chords contrast with the looser fluidity in here to stay (won t fade away), and gives a real sense of intent and desire. the real focal point however is the profound vocal that comes swirling over the top, -detroit is what i love, detroit is what i need, detroit is where i m from, detroit s the air i breathe?- no explanation necessary. b. detroit is ... hard bone rounds off part 1 of his detroit ep with aplomb. where the previous two tracks have drawn on the emotional and symbolic significance of detroit as a place and as an ideal, detroit is ... hard, cuts straight to the chase. utilizing the same vocal sample as detroit is ... soul, bone feeds things through the grinder and comes out with a late night dancefloor destroyer that blends millsian fury and red planet mystique with the archetypal subject detroit aesthetic. chaotic arpeggiated melody, indignant claps and breakneck drums and percussion are the chosen company for bone s words on this flipside to detroit is ... soul. detroit is ... hard, undoubtedly to become a mainstay for sweaty after-hours affairs the world over

bison ar holger czukay, ursa major, bj smith and paul murphy. their long awaited debut album is a fearlessly atmospheric blend of krautrock and dub disco-inspired grooves, delay-laden horns, quirky percussion, stargazing electronics. the double vinyl lp is housed in a gatefold sleeve.

on *secret weapons* lay-far presents three tracks that celebrate an era of when disco, jazz, afro and rare groove ruled the dance floors. first up is *quality hours* which to us is the perfect nugget for the early afternoon, mid-day session or late night summer parties. on the flip is *saaba dub*, the sort of light and loose disco-soul groove influenced by dub and last but not least *prime climate* ends things in a slightly more rare groove-ish way.

here comes the sun (1971) is an album by jazz singer-pianist nina simone, consisting of cover versions of songs by pop and rock musicians. it features songs recorded in the rca studios with a full orchestra and backing vocals. although simone covers songs by bob dylan and the beatles, among others, most of the versions feature arrangements substantially different from the original recordings. this is most clearly in the final song *my way*, which with its fast pacing rhythm deviates significantly from the usual interpretations. pressing on audiophile 180 gram vinyl.

the prolific lord of the isles (aka scotlands neil mcdonald) has had a string of stunning 12 inches over the past few years on labels such as permanent vacation, unthank, shevchenko, mule and of course his four track > year of the city ep< on phonica, which was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2012. this time loti presents two long-form tracks, each a mini-masterpiece in itself. the 10 minute plus >greane< bursts into life after an intro of kicks and white noise hi-hats. it continues to slowly build, with pitch-bent synth lines and a pulsing bass-line making way for a melacholic shift in mood. truly original stuff! on the flip, a swirl of synthetic strings introduces ‘gigha’, in a manner that brings to mind rhythm is rhythm’s legendary ‘kao-tic harmony’, before the drums and infectious acid-line join in. over the 8 minutes they continue to interweave and play off each other to dazzling effect. artwork by jack featherstone, the designer of a number of sleeves for border community (including the highly praised campaign behind james holden’s ‘the inheritors’, its singles and live visuals), electric minds, warm and of course, phonica.

though the iconic imagery of disco feels distinctly tied to the united states, the style had a wide-reaching influence that made it’s way to africa. while africa was already no stranger to the pulsing rhythms of funk, afro-beat, and highlife, the rise of disco added a slick sheen to the music, with musicians from all over the continent incorporating elements of the genre into their sounds. would there ever have been a studio 54 in ghana in late 70s, these would have been the recordings that would have packed the dance floor with their deep root in disco, soul & funk! an album recorded in the late 70s packed full of legendary musicians such as harry mosco and many more… to be re-discovered 35 years after it’s initial vinyl release as a private press. a “disco documentary full of funk” proves that it stands the test of time by sounding as fresh and original as any other sought-after disco / soul funk lp from the west coast of africa in the late 70s. bbe went on another crate-digging journey and found the original producer reindorf nana oppong and the original master tapes were dusted off, transferred to digital. in the process of this, even un-released material was discovered on the tapes, which makes this a rather special package. “nana love - disco documentary full of funk” is one special journey through afro disco & boogie in the late 70s, and we at bbe can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!!!

sometimes the right things just fall into the right place and so it happened with an old track by thomas p. heckmann under his drax disguise, named section 2. originally released as techno s first ever 7inch, it was very popular in 1993 and paved the way for the huge follow ups like drax three -phosphene and the hugely influential and successful drax ltd.ii - amphetamine.

this debut release from the darkest pumpkin offers mid tempo funk and grooves by the way of techno arpeggios & soulful vocal samples all served on a dance floor pulse. on wax only for the forseeable future.

to rack & ruin comes thundering your way slap bang in time for summer courtesy of our italian disco brother in arms dj rocca and his compardre n2b. the usual high standard of sounds are as present as ever on the 6th instalment of our edits and reworks imprint. get up hits you with a rolling bassline that brims with plenty of pant flapping groove & wah wah guitar licks before that ever so familiar vocal kicks in for a full on reggae disco workout. weird safari certainly lives up to its name - a stripped back, dark & almost techno sound, alongside tinkering percussion and spaced out wild animal noises surely make for a weird safari. dubby pino has you from the off, all the foot stamping & money shaking elements are present - hooky guitar, fat bass loop, infectious percussion, soulful vocal licks and a gorgeous little piano break. mr rossi’s backpain starts off by getting the award for the best song title we’ve ever had on rack & ruin, but as well as that it’s in the proper groovy dance floor tackle category with a bassline & guitar that commands your respect and then when the 4/4 kicks in at 1 min, well just have a listen.

for our second release on wavereform, we continue our explorations into sophisticated sounds from mostly-unexplored areas with the production debut from juras lietus, a 25 year-old latvian producer from riga whose mysterious origins in this out-of-the-way locale may surprise listeners, but whose sound fits very well into the label’s mission to reform the sound sphere with simple and elegant tracks that demand attention and bring unknown talent deserved notice. lietus wastes no time in showing off his developed dub techno style on >dark frank< as the bold, well-defined contours of the bottom end are contrasted with gentler ambient textures in the opening, it acquires more force as it moves along as he adds harder percussion patterns to the framework while the dense atmospherics progress barely in the background. >direct< is the more subtle and atmospheric of the pair, as crisp, delicate drums develop slowly while also suggesting melody. it too gains strength as it goes though, with ricocheting percussion and a barely-controlled feedback wail leading into a dramatic breakdown before he slowly winds things down in the detail-rich final section. j&#363,,,,,,,ras lietus and latvian techno may be mostly unknown, but this strong showing for wavereform 002 reveals much still to be uncovered in these eastern lands.
