born in a remote log cabin deep in the scottish highlands, eventual reality, the debut album from the james l’estraunge orchestra melds jazz and electronic music sensibilities with a huge helping of heart and soul. in 2014 seasoned producer and musician ricky reid and his partner retreated from the city to embark upon a new life, in his own words “away from the constant, incoherent noise of the world”. as he set up his studio, the clean air and spectacular surroundings began to provoke musical inspiration like never before. then, like a scene from ‘field of dreams’, a series of talented musicians from his former life visited the cabin for a series of late night jamming and recording sessions, leaving behind them hidden treasures to be discovered and lovingly pieced together by ricky over the following months. with nostalgia so much a part of the album’s creation, the james l’estraunge orchestra can’t help but appear somewhat spectral, after all they are truly the band that never was.

danish composer the swan and the lake is at it again with his trademark widescreen soundscapes wrapped around eight new tracks of exquisite scandinavian balearica. with the release of his first album -moments- last year on copenhagen’s music for dreams, we were introduced to a unique artistic vision. with one foot in the ambient chill out spectrum and the other in everything from classical avantgarde, idm and jazz, the music of emil svane breum under his alias the swan and the lake is both very accessible yet complex. on his new album -clouds- we see him expand on those same ideas and with seemingly simple means achieve extraordinary strong emotions. opening side a, the jazzy intro of -fresh food- leads us into a sublime piece of hazy ambient groover that could easily be mistaken for a lost 80s production from japan. -clouds over Østerbro- keeps things playfully cool and adds elements of scat singing and xylophones, layered over breum’s shimmering bright chords. while the title suggests we are still on danish soil, this feels like a five minute vacation to a tropical paradise. guitarist johan liepstack makes a guest appearance on -summer in december- which comes off as an understated anthem that could break out into euphoria at any second, but manages to stay in a sombre state all the way through. on the track -plastic pacific ocean remake- we are visited once more by airy vangelis-like vocals which assume the role of a nurturing angel, guiding us to a comforting state of relaxation and healing, as breum lays down an overwhelmingly beautiful synth serenade with chords that hit you right at the core of your most vulnerable state. flip over for the mallorca inspired track -port d andratx- which comes in two versions - part 1 (sun) shines like a perfect escape into that cafe del mar/ hostal la torre sunset while the more deep and melancholic part 2 is aptly named rain. the gentle trickling of -waterfalls- sees breum mimic the eternal cycle of water, creating an organic and ethereal composition that stretches out seemingly without beginning or end. and finally on -heaven’s voice- we see breum in his most epic and emotional mood, as he steers us through a slow explosive force of cinematic sounds. it all ends with a heartfelt spoken word contribution by guest vocalist neonbi.

junto club kicked off snap crackle & pop late last year, and now the label returns with the debut solo release from london-based outfit deeds. while rollo and kiri inglis may have previously popped up on an obscure compilation on anti-ghost moon ray, this record should see their coldwave sound shoring up with many more adventurous listeners. video dreams is a beautifully melancholic slice of electronica while unknown reaches for euphoric heights. remixes from bezier and the field round the record out as a wonderful exercise in emotive home listening electronics for sensitive souls.

es wird nicht mehr viel länger nur einem kleinem kreis bekannt sein, dass der berliner schauspieler tom schilling tatsächlich schon seit vielen jahren seine eigenen lieder komponiert und schreibt. doch es bedurfte erst der bekanntschaft mit den »jazz kids« (ein haufen musikalischer Überflieger, die mehr oder weniger extra vom regisseur des films »oh boy« jan-ole gerster für dessen soundtrack zusammen gewürfelt wurden, nur um dann folgerichtig den deutschen filmpreis für die beste filmmusik zu gewinnen), um mit eben diesen liedern ans licht der Öffentlichkeit zu treten und ihr debut album »vilnius« zu kreieren.

there is a couple downstairs they don’t specially like each other and nothing matches between them, but they are together everyday and they said things could be worst. they have two large boxes with one hole hiding their faces so they just see what they want to see. they select what is important to look at and stare at it for hours. sometime they may both look at the same thing but they don’t even know it. this is a small part of the soundtrack running in their boxes.

brian abelson aka see other is one of the brightest talents in this field to emerge from new york in some time. he’s been honing and refining his style of brooding, purring, oscillating house rollers for some time. the final brew is humble mixture of low-slung smallville-esque house warmth, fred p level deepness and playful, tinkering wooden melodies that recall some of the finest work from the drumpoet community collective.
across this debut ep is a masterful grasp of the deep house template, with an array of hook-based elements that turn respectable raw bangers into transcendental experiences both at home and in the dance.
