acid fourniture is a journey into the darker recesses of ceephax s acidic mind. simple 303 lines pulsate alongside sinister chords and detuned synths. berlin trip is a classic acid 4 to the floor track along the lines of flow coma by 808 state. alligatored is a tight 808/303 groove made for the dancefloor. the zone is a slower more introspective acid, conjuring up lost warehouses and derelict minds. alien beacon takes a more electro acid slant, inspired by sinister lights in the sky and paranoia.

does this need an explanation? my two favourite dj sides from stark reality catalog, for say brother i fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so i cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. on the flip we got bustin out of doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. to make it extra cute i used the o.g hoagy carmichael’s music shop illustration. 500 only, no repress.

john morales geht dahin, wo noch kein dj war. das universalgenie aus der bronx, das in diesem sommer resident dj bei defecteds glitterbox-event auf ibiza war und aktuell in londons angesagtem bussey building auflegt, veröffentlicht ein abendfüllendes programm. er präsentiert unveröffentlichte mixe mit klassikern von weltstarts wie donna summer, barry white, diana ross, level 42, cher, teddy pendergrass, eddie kendricks und vielen anderen. satte vier cds oder zwei separat erhältliche doppel-lps ist diese einmalige zusammenstellung lang. john morales legt seit mehr als drei jahrzehnten auf und hat in dieser zeit über 800 remixe produziert. der vierte teil seiner -m+m mixes- ist zweifelsohne sein bislang ehrgeizigstes projekt. 32 stücke hat er seiner komplexen und unverkennbaren behandlung unterzogen und sie so noch einmal neu erfunden. dafür bekam er, was kaum einem dj gelang: man gewährte ihm zugang zu den original-mehrspuraufnahmen aus den archiven. wenn boiler room ihn als einen -der besten produzenten und arrangeure von disco-musik- beschreibt, ist das eher noch untertrieben. keiner mixt wie john morales.

legendary los hermanos member santiago salazar’s album ‘aspirations for young xol’ is given a vinyl release courtesy of rekids. a heartfelt dedication to his son isaias, ‘aspirations for young xol’ takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - santiago salazar. from his formative years spent in california to his connection with detroit and the passing of a childhood friend, the long-player’s tracks signpost the musician’s significant experiences, both positive and negative. this meaningful body of work was released digitally on pastel voids and now rekids release the album on wax. ‘saturated fear’ sets a deep tone for the lp, flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album’s title track ‘aspirations for young xol’ offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. ‘bloodlines’ follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick. santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout, which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. ‘xol’s pain’ combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex, evolving motif. both ‘dark matter’ and ‘ode to stinson’ use arresting atmospheres, warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood. an intensity builds in the later tracks, a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in ‘orange blossom thump”, eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before ‘pachuco dub’ displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. ‘sarah rivera’ hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style

i made music together with lee for years (alongside mick rolfe) as last waltz. he also worked as lizards with james hadfield (james released solo for me me me 02), oli worriner, is a talented young northerner who’s already making a great name for his solo output, both under his own name and his traela alias, as well his label “tunnyl recordings”.
i’m really flattered that they’ve let me release their first full solo release, and i love how they’ve brought out each others deeper and more emotive sides in these 2 tracks. shit robot is a hero of mine. i basically wore out the grooves on a bunch of his dfa stuff from just over 10 years ago, and i’ve avidly bought everything he’s released since. i met him this summer for the first time when we shared the bill at a festival, and was so happy to find that he’s also lovely guy in real life. they say you should never meet your heroes, but i don’t subscribe to that as this meeting led to not one, but two fantastic remixes for me me me 08. the originals are a bright mix of melodically analogue left leaning house, while the remixes zero-in on a punchier dancefloor vibe, with an epic version goodnight, as well a more heads down disco dub.

helmed by a crew of ex-pats in hong kong craving the musical stimulation of their birthplaces, homesick is a celebration of the nostalgia and passion at the root of all musical experience, as channeled through seriously on-point disco edits. after choice turns from general ludd, marquis hawkes and others, this various artists 12inch brings back former guests in an implied fashion for more of that worldly, adventurous boogie business. apocalypse now simmers with unresolved tension, tart drums and gnarled synth lines, while african temperament lets the percussion tumble in a cavernous space. summer madness is a simmering, drum led version of kc flightt s classic, and then gik gwong zung pings the record off into cosmic synth disco territory for a perfect finishing move.

after kicking off with a strong various artists release, mexican label calypso records returns to showcase the talents of argentine producer thomass jackson, who has previously been spotted on gomma amongst other labels. head rejection takes on a ghoulish 1970s vibe that sports a little schlocky horror and a little spaghetti western in its discoid grooves, while witzelsutch feels equally vintage but with a more cosmic lilt to its oddball tones. creepy pc gets more of that noirish goodness lurking around the mix, and then boot & tax come on board to remix head rejection with a heads down tribal patter that keeps the atmosphere of the original intact.

kalita are busy adding more weight to their on-point reissue catalogue with this excellent single from caribbean funksters iwabo. reggae down does indeed feature a skank of sorts and all manner of sunkissed vibes, but there s a greater emphasis on laid back funk than you would find in typical jamaican output. smile on your face is a more light hearted track that equally draws on a variety of reference points to impart its infectious positive message. iwabo may have been a secret weapon of serious diggers for years, but now it s time for the wider record buying public to get in on the groove.

the second release on homage comes from chevals, and once again the vibe is quintessential deep house infused with more than a little soul stew. -see you when i git my heart broken- has funk licks aplenty to keep the party popping, while -please don t- sees that as some kind of challenge to up the ante with even more sassy samples and sizzling strings. -tres racas- finds the chevals getting a little more choppy in the drum department, and then -big man- finishes the ep off with a raucous african atmosphere to set the club alight.

spanish funk, soul and disco champion javi frias returns with the second release on his night shift label, bringing more of that classically informed party-starting business for those who love their classic disco edits. tender feeling sounds like a perfect transplant from the dancefloor of studio 54, while move to the groove is equally entrenched in the finest 70s-styled heat. supah stah and swahili dance are equally no slouches when it comes to channeling the best elements of that golden era disco sound javi frias has this music in his blood and anyone that feels the same will be all over this record, dancers and djs alike.

french producer jules etienne reappears with a 3 track ep including a jex opolis remix on barcelona s finest disco imprint apersonal music. jules shows his most elaborated work to date evolving to a more band oriented production filled with plenty of live instruments and vocals as seen on free as a man and dont want to talk about it. on the b side rhythm for the garden part i is a mad ride driven by live percussions and a drum machine. canadian producer jex opolis whos been releasing top stuff through his own good timin label comes on board on the release remixing free as a man. guilty pleasures all around

vinyl only, alex took his first musical steps by studying piano and guitar at the young age of 6. his fascination for the more outlandish, experimental side of each instrument corrupted his lessons and sent him down a modular synths and tape loop composition wormhole. years later alex resurfaced, got himself clean and, through connections made while spending time as a vocal audience member (and sometimes uninvited participant) at lyman woodard, phil ranelin, and other tribe- and motown-linked gigs in cass corridor during the mid-1970s, spent time as a session musician for earth wind and fire, chic, and prince. it was only toward the mid-90s he found himself enthralled by the techno and house sounds of detroit and chicago so he went into the woodshed and came out firing electronic salvos.

having crept out of the tape undergrowth and respected haunts like clan destine and always human to earn more civilized recognition on bank records nyc and bliq, strahinja arbutina makes the move to vivod for yet more of that edgy, leftfield techno business that keeps mothers awake at night from worry. the grit, noise and distortion has been faithfully carried through from the cassette-based roots of arbutinas sound, but these tracks are more than ready to do the damage in the dance (where you re less likely to find a tape deck). hold on tight as the likes of way ahead give the sound engineer a fright when they think the system has overloaded.

alexander kowalski has been immersed in techno for a long time, and his sound is massively representative of the reduced, late night berlin sound. as d_func. he s contributed many times to marcel heese s finitude label, and now he s back to pay tribute to uk free party techno legends spiral tribe. kowalski s own interpretation may be more minimal and hypnotic than the wild, raucous energy spiral tribe was best known for, but his trancey approach comes on like a nostalgic vision into the early 90s, while also aligning with the modern masters such as donato dozzy and peter van hoesen.

orson bramley has a long-standing legacy in uk electro history as part of the transparent sound production crew, and hes been recently aligned with robin balls memory box parties in london where he s been able to display his years of experience whipping machines into funky configurations in a live environment. this release speaks to that experience, with the various versions of then again punching out an irresistible sermon of crafty synth lines, swooping strings and crisp beats. ball steps up for two remixes on the flip that equally reside in the electro realm, but come at the component parts from a different rhythmic angle. one refined idea done five ways what more do you need to know?

sean price sadly passed away on august 8th, 2015. sean was 1/2 of heltah skeltah, 1/8 of boot camp clik and developed a cult-like following with his trio of solo album releases starting in 2011. the sean price legacy continues with the highly anticipated posthumous release of his 4th studio album, imperius rex. key selling points: the album features doom, prodigy, styles p, smif n wessun, rock, method man, raekwon, inspectah deck, junior reid, buckshot, ruste juxx, bernadette price & more. production from alchemist, harry fraud, nottz, amongst others.

sunstrumental is a double single of two neck breakin, raw, dirty, mpc cuts. it s a nod to the boom-bap school but at the same time also breaks that dogma with fresh current details. instrumentals that many mcs would love to jump on but it s even better they didnt. sunstrumental is the first solo vinyl release by sunnysun, but expect this to be just the beginning of what is to yet to come. sunny is an all-round player: established as an mc (croatian freestyle vice-champion), he lately shifted his focus more on studio work and djing. he created the first mixtape of exclusively slovenian rap music selotejp, his beats underline the lyrics of numerous mcs and appear on compilations like stiropor, ctrl n and btf x rx:tx. all in all, an unorthodox whiz never afraid of gazing into different directions, never limiting himself to just one side of hip hop. truly one of the key players, linking the various clans, posses, crews and cliks. these are his beats.

reginald omas mamode iv has a terrific track record thus far. since delivering his debut 12inch back in 2013, hes barely put a foot wrong, with last years intimate friends released mini-album, all together, being a particular highlight. this debut full-length is every bit as impressive as youd expect, with the peckham producer relying a little less on dusty samples, and rather more on loose, live drums, rubbery bass guitar, dreamy rhodes keys, and other luscious instrumentation. as usual, the assembled tracks effortlessly join the dots between jazzy instrumental hip-hop, neo-soul, mauritian drum workouts, broken beat and humid, tropical-tinged grooves.

recorded on september 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with john coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed pharoahs first) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist. (yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist birth name ferrell only later changed the spelling from the standard pharaoh to the more personalized pharoah.) with one foot in mainstream jazz – pianist jane getz had played with charles mingus and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of sanders’ style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on impulse. interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of vant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception. esp-disk has issued this album under three different covers, for its 21st-century reissue on vinyl, we have chosen to use the second and most beautiful. it is augmented with liner notes by a current esp-disk’ artist, tenor saxophonist ras moshe burnett of the red microphone, who can be heard accompanying amina baraka on their eponymous 2017 release.

catherine ringer needs no introduction. shes the woman who created an inimitable, genre-defying personality who, along with her group les rita mitsouko, had a huge effect on the french pop music scene in the 80s right through to the noughties. in may 2011, she released her first proper solo album, ringn roll. ringer took the magic of ritas roots but towards something with a more music-hall leaning at its core. after a breath-taking dalliance in plaza francia alongside two founding members of gotan project, whereby she stepped into the shoes of a tango dancer, oozing elegance and sensuality, catherine is now back with a second album, chroniques et fantaisies.

this release by matrixxman & echologist showcases sturdy techno rhythms that have happened when these two stalwarts got into the studio together. acidic tones, thumping bass drums and adventurous fx sweeps. from rhythm driven techno cuts to the more oddball bits, “the black & white ep” proves to be a versatile yet energetic package.

the next strut of lanthan.audio comes from curator christian gerlach himself. after an intense episode of exploring human architecture, it is time to open a new chapter and devote itself to the far more complex and graceful architecture of nature. with this five original tracks christian shows the diversity of his productions facets and ranks in the series of his label.

it s always an event when jacob korn fires up his custom-made studio set up to create another exciting house record. in fact, ep3 is a tasteful four-tracker that more than lives up on its two predecessors. -the happening- builds on funky drum patterns before rising into a break that feels like taking a bucket full of water to the chest. another burning dance floor affair is -holiday- with its percussion-driven beats and heavy staccato style synths, in all its caribbean glory. -goodbye- is driven by an irresistible sample and string combination while -thru the eyes- is riding on a cheerful drum foundation and killer sample. dancefloor heaven. as she did for ep1 and ep2 the new record is again illustrated by anna jaszpataki from dresden.

“never change a winnig team”. that s what radio citizen s niko schabel must have thought when he decided to release his fourth album once again on sonar kollektiv. after the success of “the night & the city” (sk310lp / cd) from 2015 and the productive collaboration ever since this seems like a wise resolution. schabel s idea to retrieve to a mountain cabin in salvenberg, tirol with his band and tons of equipment turned out to be an even more crucial factor to the cause. here they could create and record new songs and bring them together neatly for the new album. the 13 tracks assembled here on “silent guide” are – each on its own and in its entirety anyway – best proof how wonderfully this approach has worked out.

at night, things get a lot more unpredictable. a stranger can become a friend, you suddenly become intimate with a woman or a man whos name you will never find out, while darkness also allows you to conceal your true identity - even become someone else. inspiration for this album emanates from the fascination towards the intensity of what nightlife has to offer , euphoria and melancholy, spotlights or incognito, sexual contact or lonely voyeurism... francois x entertains the listener with playful ambiguity and unsettling, yet sensual atmospheres.

long time friend of the label myler finally makes his south london analogue material debut with ‘lord of the asbo’. the ep starts with driving kicks, hypnotic wandering synths and the noisy dissonant stabs of ‘mandem’ before taking a more melancholy turn. ‘shutter windows’ slows things down with eerie echoes, dusty thudding kick drums and subtle synths before ‘whiskey & white women’ finishes the last of the originals with a drum track full of trippy percussion and masterful groove. bad boy keepsakes is back on the label after slam003 and finishes the ep with his take on ‘shutter windows’.

(simple symmetry remix) wisely opting to retain much of the feel of the original, sasha and sergey have instead gently pushed the tempo, toughened up the drums with a new focus on the original track s percussive elements and addeda greater depth of space, providing even more room to lose yourself on the dancefloor amongst the tracks eerie synths and wordless chants.

the seventh ep on frits wentinks bobby donny label brings together some known and unknown producers. the original production is by low end activist, someone who has spent the last 15 years in berlin, bristol and brighton, no doubt picking up parts of the musical styles of those cities as he goes. it features london grime mc trim, an original member of roll deep and an artist signed to james blake s 1-800 label. the remixes comes from frits himself as well as cassius select, who has recently released on uttu and herbert s accidental. park end is a naughty tune with garage tinged drums slipping and sliding beneath menacing rhymes from trim. paranoid synth sounds and an oscillating low end speak of late night urban mischief and its the sort of characterful tune to stand out in any set. cassius select reconfigures the tune as a much more dark and experimental number with a heavy bottom end and huge sub bass that totally envelops you. frits then goes for a more mellow and melodic version, with lazy drums and wilting chords as rainy keys fall from above. it glows like street lights at night and closes out an ep with real attitude

fh10 marks onirik’s debut ep on his very own finest hour imprint. the a side, with “kaleidophon” and “vivid”, carries the slightly darker and trippier sound recently embodied on his solo label, garage hermétique. on the flip, a more traditional stripped down deep house affair, an 11 minutes groover for the early hours, aligning perfectly with the label’s aesthetics.
