reginald omas mamode iv has a terrific track record thus far. since delivering his debut 12inch back in 2013, hes barely put a foot wrong, with last years intimate friends released mini-album, all together, being a particular highlight. this debut full-length is every bit as impressive as youd expect, with the peckham producer relying a little less on dusty samples, and rather more on loose, live drums, rubbery bass guitar, dreamy rhodes keys, and other luscious instrumentation. as usual, the assembled tracks effortlessly join the dots between jazzy instrumental hip-hop, neo-soul, mauritian drum workouts, broken beat and humid, tropical-tinged grooves.
reginald omas mamode iv releases his self titled debut album ! the cult peckham soul artist caps the release of three highly praised eps with an album featuring his most confident songwriting to date. the album paints a collage of dusty drum hits, sly stone-esque bass lines and mamode’s own one-take vocals. themes go from the personal, such as relationship communication breakdown, to the universal, in the anti-war theme of ‘the value’. it remains grounded in a love of syncopated drums, played out in the dilla-esque ‘talk to me’, or the free jazz of ‘omas sextet’. elsewhere, on album opener ‘bruk out’, the broken beat scene collides with the groove based jazz fusion of herbie hancock and the headhunters, whilst on ‘drums of the positive’, mamode channels the “slave island music of my father’s heritage… maloya, sega, nyabinghi”.

ltd 2019 repress - sprung up from his much-fêted clubnight of the same name, bradley zero has enlisted fellow peckham local al dobson jr to inaugurate rhythm section international with this: rye lane volume 1, an 11 track mini-lp stuffed to the rafters with summery goodness. the importance of location on rye lane volume 1 appears both tantamount and inconsequential: many of the titles on offer dot specific points of reference on the map (peru, grenada, cameroon, columbia, peckhams rye lane), but dobson jr does his best to melt these heterogeneous influences down into something definably his own
a quartet of heavy reworks. reginald omas mamode iv truly does what he does best, bringing a percussive, low-slung funk to one of the most ethereal and beautiful pieces of soul on the album, sunshine. glenn astro, elevates bossa b to a jostling, bouncing shuffler that eventually turns around and heads skyward with uplifting chords and irresistible bass. deoke heads into the darker regions of the original for his hugely loved remix of bossa b. the bass on this one is ridiculous and has caused damage to a couple of sound systems were aware of (genuinely). finally the ever exceptional mr beatnick simply took the stereo track for kalimba 2 and edited it into a mind-opening dub. handling bass and harmonics as only he can, a true highlight of this high quality remix package.
