the ebm-indebted techno funk of james welshs thread reemerges from the industrial fog, evolved into two outstanding remixes by a trio of established, emerging and somewhat unexpected artists. ozel ab delivers his debut remix, reimagining thread to encompass a widescreen vision of depth and drama. unfolding slowly and ethereally, with military kicks holding down a seemingly weightless, extended breakdown, his taste in dreamlike rave euphoria contains the same magic touch as it has done on previous, acclaimed releases for workshop and lobster theremin. on his garten remix, radio slave takes a percussive approach to the relatively raw electronics of the original track, adding a deceptively simple but immediately effective layer of drums to the production, before unleashing a more filtered and fucked-up interpretation of the riff to winning effect.

in my house opens things up with serene synth work and lush detroit stylings. it’s a deep and widescreen track that encourages you to dream. fresh air is a little more upright, with rattling hits and pixelated, long tailed synths lingering above the rooted drums. as the title suggests, leaving this planet is a cosmic exploration, with ambient keys and meditative atmospheres joined by only the most subtle and suggestive sense of rhythm way down below. last of all is two times, a beautiful deep house track with deft synths drifting, bleeding and wandering off into a starry night sky. all in all, then, these are truly thoughtful house tracks.

dj aakmael is a producer weve been loving for many years and were proud to be presenting you with his freerange debut. the us artist has had consistent releases dating back to 2004 and has graced the discographies of many a fine label including uzuri, earthrumental, kolour ltd, his own unxpozd entertainment and most recently the hotly tipped uk label church. here on his daydreeming ep were treated to four original tracks of real house music produced by a true original of the underground. kicking off we have daydreeming with muscular beats laying the foundation for some widescreen orchestral strings and off-kilter and subtly deranged torchsong vocals. rimbaudian steps up for the remix following what for us, is one of the tracks of 2016, werka 8 from his meda fury release. the swedish producer brings a very fresh approach with a loopy and hypnotic techno edge which draws you in with its repeating vocal and trippy sinewave melodies. flipping over we have basement 2 which drops the tempo slightly for a more heads down detroit-inspired jam. a simple three note synth repeats throughout while moody pads bring the deep heat resulting in a track that you could get lost in for days. beacot road closes the ep in fine style with introspective filtered piano chords providing the magic on this simple, stripped back track, the whole thing sounding somehow blunted like its being beamed through a thick haze of ganja smoke. enjoy, and please show your support for dj aakmael!

at its core, organn is a record about love and duality. taking inspiration from isidore-lucien ducasse’s poem les chants de maldoror, the record is antagonistic yet often drops its temper to reveal blistered beauty within the chaos. such are the contradictory elements within the compositions themselves: widescreen claustrophobia, glimmering sludge, piercing vhs ambience. visuals come courtesy of french mixed-media artist, thomas hauser. hauser’s imagery similarly evokes retrograde surrealism and further insists on a narrative at work here, with obscured characters playing out alongside mantric piano, filmic vox and hyperspeed jungle.

danish composer the swan and the lake is at it again with his trademark widescreen soundscapes wrapped around eight new tracks of exquisite scandinavian balearica. with the release of his first album -moments- last year on copenhagen’s music for dreams, we were introduced to a unique artistic vision. with one foot in the ambient chill out spectrum and the other in everything from classical avantgarde, idm and jazz, the music of emil svane breum under his alias the swan and the lake is both very accessible yet complex. on his new album -clouds- we see him expand on those same ideas and with seemingly simple means achieve extraordinary strong emotions. opening side a, the jazzy intro of -fresh food- leads us into a sublime piece of hazy ambient groover that could easily be mistaken for a lost 80s production from japan. -clouds over Østerbro- keeps things playfully cool and adds elements of scat singing and xylophones, layered over breum’s shimmering bright chords. while the title suggests we are still on danish soil, this feels like a five minute vacation to a tropical paradise. guitarist johan liepstack makes a guest appearance on -summer in december- which comes off as an understated anthem that could break out into euphoria at any second, but manages to stay in a sombre state all the way through. on the track -plastic pacific ocean remake- we are visited once more by airy vangelis-like vocals which assume the role of a nurturing angel, guiding us to a comforting state of relaxation and healing, as breum lays down an overwhelmingly beautiful synth serenade with chords that hit you right at the core of your most vulnerable state. flip over for the mallorca inspired track -port d andratx- which comes in two versions - part 1 (sun) shines like a perfect escape into that cafe del mar/ hostal la torre sunset while the more deep and melancholic part 2 is aptly named rain. the gentle trickling of -waterfalls- sees breum mimic the eternal cycle of water, creating an organic and ethereal composition that stretches out seemingly without beginning or end. and finally on -heaven’s voice- we see breum in his most epic and emotional mood, as he steers us through a slow explosive force of cinematic sounds. it all ends with a heartfelt spoken word contribution by guest vocalist neonbi.

hippie priest returns to argot to release his second album, see it through. having made great strides at dialing in his production and strengthening his songwriting since the release of gaia variants in 2016, the young champaign-based producer focuses his sophomore longplayer around a narrative approach. see it through is a day in the life of a lioness, says hippie priest, beginning with the soft ambience of waking up in the morning, leading up to an intense hunt in the middle, and into evening revelry and eventual slumber. the albums 11 tracks cover a large stretch of sonic ground to tell this story. its glowing opener, umbrella keeper gives way to widescreen stompers thorn and quicksand that clear the way for more contemplative moments like crystal or cherry blossom. one cant help but imagine a dramatic hunt while listening to are you okay? or carnivorous displays on desire. even tender scenes are possible with closers tanuki and tired lioness, gorgeous movements in which hippie priests melodic profficiencies shine brightest. second album from the up-and-coming young producer from central illinois.

coast to coast vividly presents the many faces of belgian producer and dj peter van hoesen. example in case: the title track is a no-holds-barred epic synthesizer composition, recorded at the producer s handwerk audio synthesizer studios. van hoesen s love for widescreen synthesis comes clearly to the fore on this track. it is a beautiful showcase of how techno can be emotive, driving and muscular, all at the same time. entrance to entropic city takes a different path, opting for a much more abstract narrative. shunning away from the dancefloor, it chooses to hint at concepts hidden below its sonic surface. voodoo benny s wishbone takes the listener deep into hypnotic and percussive breakbeat territory. menacing synth sweeps coil around the drums while a polyrhythmic groove shows off its tension, six minutes long. finally, in empire in decline - 2017 dub van hoesen reworks his 2008 classic. shuffling breakbeats form a new base for empire s bouncing synth lead.

discographies in dance music don’t come much more impressive than that belonging to paul woolford, the man behind seminal releases for the likes of planet e, xl recordings and running back. special request is the project that sees him continuing to defy expectation with a new ep on the fabric-run label houndstooth. stairfoot lane bunker encapsulates this approach with 5 bold new excursions into the outer limits followed by a remix from minor science (known for his previous releases on whities and the trilogy tapes) the eagle-eyed will notice 5 of these tracks appear on fabriclive 91. this ep is issued as an addendum. redrum is the fierce opener. rampantly-edited electro beats, a sampled speak-n-spell vocal, and a pure sci-fi breakdown sets the scene for the rest. stairfoot lane bunker and replicant are jungle tracks taken to dizzying extremes - the former building from widescreen atmospherics, thunder spells and lightning before descending into a frenzy of breakbeats and long heavy bass notes. replicant ratchets the pressure up further with hyper-edits across it s breakbeat introduction and throughout, punctuated by furnace-rattling subs. telepathic dog and five lane ends are highly evocative ambient pieces, pushing into the uncanny realms of metaphysical music. to end the release minor science comes through with his remix of stairfoot lane bunker, effortlessly blending in his own work with the disjointed sr breakbeats, flashing only snippets of the serrated bars, chopping them up and creating a new track in the process.

minimood welcomes copenhagen based master duo merv for two tantalising new tracks, and thus continues the reductionist dub techno stance the label has been advocating lately. after 2 decades of silence, this new ep marks merv s first new material and suggests that they have lost none of their magic touch. blank i is nine minutes of expert and exquisite dub techno. the kicks ping with an infectious thump, the dub chords are fantastically crisp and well crafted as they float in space and swallow up the drums. widescreen and edgeless, warm dubby techno. blank ii is a equally stripped-back and elegant dub techno affair as blank i, yet with a more upright and direct twist. slapping hits and lively chords are riding above the rolling, loopy drums. a ride that will guide through the deepest nights. vinyl only!

opening this essential release is the slow and spaced out groove of replicant v1, with fat synths and dark spacecraft sounds circling you as the drums grow ever bigger. shoulder of orion then drops into a rickety groove with soulful pads stretching off to the horizon as rough drums march below. proving he has real range, motor rotor is a deep and driving track that conveys a real sense of motion as it races along an intergalactic highway, and love on time picks up the pace yet further with twisted synths roaming free above a motorik kick and icy hi hats. last of all for the digital release, replicant v2 is a spacey and dramatic techno effort with widescreen pads and gurgling synths making for a turbulent ride. first vinyl bonus cut hang on is a forceful seven minutes of eerie and cosmic techno that stretches out in all directions as manic melodies rain down from above. lastly, traktion is full of ominous drones, crashing percussion and sombre pads and makes for a dramatic and driving track that is filled with pain

after a first collaboration focusing on the city of angels, la legend john tejada and acid innovator tin man (johannes auvinen), this time brooding on the latters home city, and formers birthplace, vienna. the austrian capital is known as the city of music and the city of dreams, two broadly aligning concepts that go far in describing this beguiling 12-inch. the four songs were mixed down live to 2 tracks, created in the real world without a daw, or multi tracking, which has really captured the spirit of performance and improvisation. succeeding railjet, a tense drum workout, comes bim, referring to the colorful trams that run through vienna. here, auvinen sculpts his 303 into near-pizzicato form. the acid box is accompanied by stately pads making for one of the duo’s most memorable tracks yet. the next cut, danube nights, references the mighty, ancient river, the flow motion mirrored by a couple of widescreen acid lines. a pensive lead and some melancholy chords emerge, but the drums roll right along like the water- tough enough for a heaving floor with a hint of fragility for the headphones. the record concludes with the acidic prater allee, named after idyllic, sprawling park on the banks of the danube. the duos love letter to vienna is well-suited for travel, for the dance and for dreaming.

lost classics, loft classics and leftfield antics crammed into one double-o dose of good plus plastic! the crew set the gas to a sultry simmer with outer-galactic opener amantes cosmicos , lending a little looped up jump juice to a sci-fi disco favourite. thrusting bass and sequencer sizzle speed the starship ever-onwards, approaching warp speed as the widescreen kalimba unlocks the stargate.

after his recently, well acclaimed balearic adventures as “jane in palma”, don froth makes a welcome return to the wncl fold. he comes out fighting with the bass and bleep heavy “hr22”, nicely juxtaposed with the equally quirky but altogether more soulful sounds on “joint loose”. flip to the b side for more jump up adventures with -docs- and, by popular demand, his previously bite-sized cut “a broad range” gets extended into a full on acid squelch “widescreen mix” to close the show.

london-based producer, visual artist and nts radio host kit grill has announced a new 5-track ep, titled westway. the ep will be available digitally along with a limited run of 200 vinyl copies designed by alex sullivan, with cover photography by grill and an accompanying video by london director laurie lynch. westway draws on grill’s personal experiences of living in a cityscape and echoes the industrial, fast-paced and repetitive rhythm of his home city, london. the ep was recorded over the course of several months from early 2015 to february of this year, the propulsive beats and driving, shimmering synthwork across tracks like ‘distance’ and ‘street runner’ inspired by and echoing the brutalist beauty of the capital, culminating in the euphoric, widescreen string flourishes of closing track ‘stairway’.

black crow is the third single to be taken from the album ‘the soft bounce’. part american gothic, part future movie soundtrack, it’s a song of haunting beauty. holly miranda s vocal glides across reflective strings and delicate crystalline snippets of sound, resulting in an epic torch song lament. it’s backed with white crow, erol alkan s mighty extended reworking of the song, placing it in spacious widescreen, where you can hear for miles.

ep number four of this series of eight remastered tracks with remix-tributes to the techno legend christian morgenstern is here, and kicks off with d_funcs remix of steigreider on side a. creating a warm grayscale atmosphere, the track is carried by a heavy sub kick groove thats saturated with the modern industrial energy that proves kowalski’s skills as a techno craftsman. as a contrast, jeroen searchs remix of aces high on b1 is a more minimal interpretation, carried by a slowly developing beat and playing skillfully with the most recognisable elements of the original. the final track, a remastered version of morgensterns lydia to the edge of panic is a timeless classic, painting a morgenstern-typical distant and dream like landscape and opening up into a widescreen chord progression, with an epic build up.

since his last full-length, ode, tin man, aka johannes auvinen, has taken a collaborative approach to acid, bringing his 303 box into studio scenarios with cassegrain, john tejada, aaaa and gunnar haslam in order to explore new territory. on acid test 11, auvinens arrived on a seamless pairing with manchester production duo jozef k and winters son. on the title track, tin mans acrobatic 303 no longer has to do the melodic heavy lifting-the mancunians provide a sturdy yet plaintive piano base that allows a duet of acid lines to cut through the heady atmosphere. interdimensional transmissions boss erika toughens things up considerably with her fates unknown remix, stripping things back to a creepy, jacking core. pendle by night underlines the ad hoc trios propensity for widescreen heft. the tracks epic, emotional tone feels like a natural product of the collaboration

kevin arnemann and daan kemps taped artifact label clocks up its fourth release with a three track offering from outlaw rec boss and key part of the italian serendipity club, namely matthew oh. matthew has previously released on his own label and others like side off, and eloquently marries dub, techno and house into smooth and sensuous sonic landscapes. the opening track psycho hub is an atmospheric and spacious roller with dubbed out drums and pads, coupled with incendiary hi hats urging you along. shroud is seven minutes of slick and spaced out deep techno with liquid synths and clacking hits all racing along and making for a frictionless groove that sucks you right in. finally, get in the fridge slows the tempo down and becomes an even more widescreen and roomy roller with suspensory pads, smeared synths and aqueous sonic details that make you feel like you are floating in sound.

as half of teengirl fantasy, logan takahashi is best known for making glassy, expansive tracks. on his debut solo album nogeo, however, he creates an intimate world of fertile, furtive rhythms. throughout the album, techno-tinged patterns unfurl with zeal and digital melodies slowly rise and fall. if the music of teengirl evokes widescreen, technicolor club scenes, nogeo is a zoomed-in study of timbre, rhythm, and melody.
