central to the israeli club scene, deepa & biri have long been defying expectations even within a community they helped construct. serving as resident djs, activists and bookers for tel avivs legendary barzilay club, the pair helped build a transcendent club scene. hugely influential artists such as robert hood, derrick may, rødhad, ben klock and moritz von oswald passed through the club, enjoying legendary crowds and what they could surely sense was a genuine air of anarchy, rebellion and unadulterated rave pleasure. as the duo held down dozens of parties with dozens of djs, there was no ‘eureka moment for their emerging sound, just a steady stream of brilliant, inspiring electronic music, much of which left an indelible imprint on the pair. now based in berlin, for deepa & biri, things are much the same, even if the landscape and the city is different. always rooted in the fertile ground between machines and emotion, on their second full-length lp, ‘dominance, the duo demonstrate their unique grasp of the sensitive, unfolding relationship between man and machine. steadfast in their insistence never to remain in one lane in terms of their sound, ‘dominance flawlessly segues between forcefulness and weightlessness. from beginning to end, this is not a record afraid to show its teeth with an uncompromising, instantly recognisable techno palette that kicks the foundations of any sound system with menace, anger and determination, particularly on tracks such as the dense ‘voltage and pulsing throughout the more industrial flourishes of ‘ecole de nancy and ‘seeking solace.

following a superb remix of hakimonus æinsular realms in 2015, ed davenports inland alias returns to deepa & biris black crow recordings with a brand new ep for the labels tenth release. having played a key role in the relaunch of functions infrastructure new york imprint, in addition to operating his own widley admired counterchange label, davenports techno project has brought the englishman to wider recognition as one of the genres most talented producers. the new eps three original tracks finds inland exploring all facets of his diverse sound: a1, æmetatlantic is driving, acid-laced techno, æcosinaxis, employs electro beat patterns and idm aesthetics, b-side opener, ælagoon9, is a melodic detroit-indebted big room weapon. closing out the ep is a remix of from 3kz aka italian duo z.i.p.p.o & kaelan, the latter of whom provided one of black crows standout releases so far under his 2030 alias with last years timeworm ep. their remix of æcosinaxis follows hot on the heels of their debut album æparallel reflections, released earlier this year on z.i.p.p.o.s fides imprint.

for the labels ninth release, deep a & biris black crow records revisits one that helped establish the labels direction back in the imprints first year. bcr003, insular realms by fellow israeli producer hakimonu, was praised by many including resident advisor, who said the ep proved his off-kilter take on techno and house is as vibrant and inviting as ever. now in 2017, deepa & biri have invited mind against, luigi tozzi and echologist (aka dub techno veteran brendon moeller) to all rework the original version of insular realms for 2017. first up are life & death’s mind against, with one of the fognini brothers most direct techno productions yet, with a mid-track moment of calm before the intensity resumes. luigi tozzi, the rome-based producer who has had previous outings on dynamic reflection and dino sabatinis outis music, contributes the second remix. taking the lead from the originals more ethereal moments, his version is dreamy & almost wistful as it propels along its shaking rhythm. the b-side offers two takes from brendon moeller in his echologist guise, with a dub mix that twists the original into an acid-inflected track that slowly ratchets up the tension over its seven minutes, while the reshape breaks things down into a churning rhythm peppered with flashes f off kilter sonic details.

following two staggering contributions from the analogue roland orchestra and 2030 that illustrated to boundless sonic possibilities for the label, deep’a & biri return to their tel aviv-based black crow label with a pair of powerful, emotive techno cuts in the style for which the duo long since become admired. for a long time one of those admirers has been detroit techno founding father derrick may, who has been on a mission to push the new 12inches a-side, basic cycle, into instant classic territory through his unwavering commitment to making the track a highlight of his sets. may has been far from alone, with the track being one that d&b have been asked about, if not outright begged for, over the past year or so. it finally becomes available to techno fans worldwide in january 2017, backed by the pummelling rhythms of overdrum, which itself has the potential to turn heads and drop jaws all by itself.

deepa & biris black crow records further expands its horizons with its seventh release, welcoming another new artist to the family following appearances by 2030, aril brihka, hakimonu, luke hess, rod, inland and markus suckut. the analog roland orchestras label debut follows the widely acclaimed 2030 ep and shares with it a widening of the labels sonic scope to once again showcase deepa & biris desire to reach beyond techno and explore ambient and cinematic musical textures. michal matlaks analog roland orchestra finds the poland born & berlin based producer in the conductor role among an array of classic electronic hardware, taking on the role of shaping & directing a free flowing sound that moves across genres, whether in a studio or live setting. his previous releases for labels including ornaments, rotary cocktail recordings and pastamusik have seen the project indulge in an array of sounds across the techno spectrum. aftermath ii is no different, moving from the classic roots techno sounds of plant and father detroit, through the dub excursion of urei dub, to the cinematic, boards of canada & tangerine dream-recalling pair her and aftermath. for those with a taste for electronic musics widescreen possibilities, taros arrival on the tel aviv imprint will be a long term favourite.

the sixth release on deepa & biris black crow label welcomes another new name into the fold: nico campanella has been quietly building a stellar reputations for himself over the past few years, working under a variety of aliases to explore a sound that much like deepa & biri draws deeply from technos detroit heritage as well as the propulsive dub techno of basic channel.

following the release on the legendary transmat records, deep a & biri are back to their home label with lightsdown. new deep techno work with two versions, reflecting the emotional versus darker side of their production scale.

the third release on tel aviv duo deepa & biris black crow label comes from israeli talent hakimonu. pressing on white vinyl.

tel avivs deep a & biri and iran-born producer aril brikha will unite on a forthcoming 12inch on deeps & biris black crow label, from which proceeds will be donated to a israel/palestine peace projects organization.

its only early july, but 2013 has already proven to be a landmark year for production/dj duo deepa & biri. with a couple of their tracks being released on transmat records and appearing on derrick mays mix compilations on the one hand, while on the other, getting signed to dj hells international dj gigolo records, where they released a single in april and have a full album forthcoming mid-september it seems that all corners of the techno diaspora are ready to catch up on their sound.
