shakarchi & straneus inhabit a secret place in the universe of music, one existing at the intersection of scandinavian poplands, hisingen forest raves and outernational placelessness. faik shakarchi and daniel stranéus famously started making beats together in the gothenburg tapas-joint coat check where they both worked as clerks. their now 10 years old friendship is the story of legends, their sparse vinyl output the secret love of deep house 12inch enthusiasts round the globe the warm, vibrant sounds found on those records a stark contrast to the stripped-down effectiveness of their marathon dj sets, frequently heard within the more nefarious examples of gbg nightlife.

if psychic health s self-titled debut album took the lessons the la duo learned in the teeming clubs of berlin and melbourne, their latest lp, exclusion, look inward, a document of the duo tunneling down the studio wormhole. as such, exclusion is a remarkably dynamic effort, adeptly jumping between evocative ambience (-jamaica 88,- -ryso-) and equally expansive dance floor fair. examples of the latter, such as the album s obvious centerpiece and titular track, exclusion, document gabriel mounsey and devon steffens’s harnessing modular beast technology for peak techno utility, finding a clear thoroughfare between the soaring strings of derrick may s classic transmat releases and ostgut ton s current ebm-inflected precision. as you d expect from mounsey s background in film composition, exclusion whirls with imagery. it s a los angeles album, but focuses on raw beauty of the city at night—the lights in the distance, and the desolate downtown streets where kickdrums often waft from disused warehouses. while their debut album opened notable doors for the group, landing distribution from hard wax and featuring in the netflix series sense8, exclusion is an altogether masterful turn for psychic health, their complete studio immersion easing the listener into deeply hypnotic states.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....

forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, emotional rescue turn their attention towards carl & carol jacobs cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. -yonge street jam band- comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. the playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

hands down proper detroit gear, timeless classic material here, if that s what you re after - look no further! coming on strong way back in 87 on the legendary kms label when we used to play is 4 solid as cuts, stripped back box jams, sleazy vocals and samples and ultra-jacking rhythms! this one s for the heads and is the first of 2 baxter 12-s that mint condition will be presenting to you! trademark deep basslines and sultry atmospheres are what baxter does best and this is one of the first, and best, examples of his unique flavour of house and techno. there have been a few bootlegs of this classic ep floating around for a few years, but this pressing is the real deal, a solid collabo between mint condition and blake baxter. an essential cornerstone of one of the most important musical scenes in dance music indeed - every home should have one!

ensos 4th installment is a 3-tracker which bears the distinct signature of intrepid soul: electro, acid, hypnotic modulated synths. side a comprises 2 tracks: e.c. nature and rikimbili. the first track features a driving bassline and a hypnotic electro-ish synth theme. rikimbli is more playful, with glitchy percussions and an acid-esque synth theme. its like the marching theme of an army of robots. side b features idiogenic, which shows a more deep and melodic side of the artist. all 3 tracks are fine examples of intrepid soul’s exquisite analogue production and we believe they fit perfectly with what enso is all about.

this double-pack cymbolic originally came out in 1995 and found favour with electronic music fans who sought a deeper edge in their music. it s all here, the trademark drum programming, the epic sense that all of the burden bros productions have within them. this is dancefloor music, music for dj s to utilise, tools, but tools with the deepest soul imaginable. listen to terraforming or the symbiont - perfect examples of driving, almost tribal-esque rhythms fused with strings, synth pads and human feeling. cymbolic is for you if you re a fan of detroit techno, but it s also for those who enjoy the deepest electronic sounds. that s not to say it isn t funky though, these tracks will decimate most dance-floors, and therein lies the secret. essential

london-based producer and dj tarquin has returned to gobstopper. “grease (chord mix)” is a high tempo example of the genre’s more experimental side, using fragmented percussive samples set to a background of pitch-bent chord stabs and twisted melodic elements.
providing as much impact in the track’s negative space as in its instrumentation, tarquin s minimalist approach to production on “grease (chord mix)” establishes its boldness and makes it one of the most recognisable examples of deconstructed club music of the year so far.
as a counter-point to the abstract starkness of “grease (chord mix)”, the release s flip side “foxtown” utilises ominous synths and distorted bass tones to tackle the more upfront sound of first generation grime production.

the late 1960s / early 70s brought about a change in sound for many gospel groups. producers and label heads at abc peacock recognized that the traditional sound of gospel needed to be updated to appeal to the younger market. the groups started to incorporate elements of soul and funk with arrangements influenced by the r&b records of the time. this compilation presents 13 striking examples of this seismic shift in black music by some of the greatest groups in gospel music’s rich heritage.

transmitting straight from the 10th floor of a beat-down rotterdam skyscraper is studio barnhus debutant mark fader. when hes not analyzing the bird life outside his studio window or contemplating matters of love, death and office management, fader enjoys churning out true school electro cuts with a modern edge and some extra fonk. we were lucky enough to catch four examples of this to put on record. vinyl only release because it felt good this time. studio barnhus is forever!

emotional especial comes together with future nuggets for a -special- one-off collaboration. reinterpreting the music of steaua de mare are four remixes from rising (eastern) stars khidja and mehmet aslan. the first in a short series of especial -specials- - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with future nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, steaua de mare. returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked. first khidja take album track babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds. next mehmet aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. on the flip, mehmet then reworks album highlight, doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds. to finish, khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 septembrie. going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. a perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

as until my heart stops turns 10, we head back across the atlantic , this time to boston and a stunning ep from the still hugely under rated deviere. deviere is a music producer and radio disc jockey (progressive black, 90.3 fm wzbc newton) based in boston, massachusetts. he first came to our attention with the transcendental numbers ep on jamal moss mathematics label in 2012 and we ve waited on each release ever since, including last year s huge future shock disco ep (a collaboration with jamal himself). here deviere presents 3 beautiful examples of his deep, soulful craft and a fitting way for umhs to hit double figures.

“last days and time” is the third studio album by american r&b group earth, wind & fire, released in 1972, their debut album on columbia records. it was recorded at the legendary sunset sound studios in hollywood, california, with founder and multi-instrumentalist maurice white, verdine white and philip bailey. due to their live performances it cemented their status as the main funk band and set the stage for the band’s blockbuster breakthrough. songs on the album like “make it with you” (originally from bread) the pre-“brazilian rhyme” powerful funk sax style “power”, (which sounds like an early version of “serpentine fire”) and “remember the children” are excellent examples of the great songs and albums they have made during their career.

music is about discourse: it’s about ideas, about the intellectual project. anyone can build a “beat”, but not everybody can produce an interesting argument for it. this implies the idea of romanticism as a notion of tradition and respect for certain rules. romanticism understood as virtuosity in the manipulation of art production tools. virtuosi of their own methodology. certain pedigree of virtuosity is definitely needed…but in many regards it also remains an extremely conventional formalism, which is at the core of every artist. it doesn’t matter if you have to piss around in the subterranean electronic music trenches for over two decades. a true pioneer simply has to live with that sort of dichotomy. here there are two good examples.

it is more than astounding why this tune hasn t been resurrected for an ad for one of the many chain of fast food outlets. although the original 45 is neither superrare nor expensive, finger licken chicken is certainly one of the finest examples of philly funk. it was originally released on leoso but was re-released on the yew label. both sides were written by sonny fulton who teamed up with sandra for a killer r&b-ish funk cut on the flip titled back breaking love

jacking chicago tracks on this first ep by offenbach s freshmen am unit containing three original tracks plus a solid remix by lauer (one half of tuff city kids). a-sided gotta slow down and hold back are classic examples of dancefloor fillers while b-sided raw jam is a hard and super effective acid track that leaves no-one indifferent. the dub mix of gotta slow down by lauer is an oscillating interpretation of the original track with an efficient piano line! limited to 400 hand stamped and numbered copies!

amin peck is an electronic studio project, contaminated by the new wave from u.k. like most ’80s electronic bands. amin-peck walked a fine line between disco and minimal wave throughout the course of the early 1980s, oftentimes incorporating shameless pop melodies and avant-garde leanings. amin peck were an italian band leaded by giorgio fioroni (aka george fyron, arrangements, production, vocals) with leonard parker (arrangments, keyboards) and max marne (production). incredible but true, amin peck started as hard rock guitar band in the 70s... and becoming one of the best examples of italo disco. this limited edition it contains full-length versions plus uncut audio material (a2) tracked down during tape restoration. (the first pressing coming from 1982 was pressed only on 7inch in u.k.)

after the big success of the reissue of “mbg ep one”, we are proud to introduce the release of optik “music harmony & rhythm”, another great ep originally released in 1991 under mbg international records. optik is the alias of giorgio canepa and ricky montanari, two of the most talented italian producers from the early 90s italian underground-house movement. in this ep we find two killer deep-house tracks, “music harmony and rhythm” and “illusions”, two great examples of the italo-house touch of the early 90s that we found in a lots of other productions by mbg, don carlos and key tronics ensemble, to name a few plus “illusion” which is also sure an epic track, it was the last disc played at vae victis (misano, italy) and the first disc played at novenove (gradara, italy), two of the most famous italian after hours of the 90 s era. fully re-mastered, dmm cutted, re-pressed & re-released for 2015 in it s original format from the original mastertapes, with the permission & participation of all rights holders with all original mbg label artwork intact.

ontals work excites many conflicting emotions. exuberant, convoluted and theatrical plots define the watchwords attached to the serbian duo. they represent one of the most paradigmatic examples of how industrial/techno can still offer a wide range of pleasant surprises. a visceral understanding of the scenic rhythm space vs. void establishes a metamorphic composition in short of an almost baroque sensitivity. always moving around an unstable fringe of intuition-rules-over-eclecticism, together with an attitude of total irreverence against the old aphorism, but keeping at the same time an incredible discipline of sophistication, produce a situation where anything touched by them have to be immediately placed at the top of the evolution line of the electronic music. “pietà” simply shows this feeling at their best.
