joe powers is from edinburgh, far outside the network of the grime capital of london. his caffeinated productions as proc fiskal are faster than usual, with many clocking in at 160bpm. ‘the highland mob’, his 2017 debut ep, opened up his music to open-eared footwork and drum’n’bass fans as well as the grime crowd. after following that up with a jungle-inflected ep on cosmic bridge, ‘insula’ switches the feel and intention towards a personal, and melodic music with one foot in grime, infused with often comic, often wistful recorded moments from his environment. he says ‘i wanted to be aware of where the music is coming from, referencing things i’m presently experiencing, like making grime, my radar radio show, phone addiction, alcohol, my surroundings, girls, depression, positivity, being unemployed, being employed and hating it, my friends etc. trying to be true to myself instead of relying on other peoples’ nostalgia, and focusing on now.’ the record is a huge leap in vision, with delicate, pointillist melodies and intricate edits reminiscent of grime producers such as terror danjah. it also resonates with japanese video game music like that recently explored on the ‘diggin in the carts’ compilation. ‘i think i probably make tunes to get out emotions i don’t express in day-to-day life. i used clips of my friends talking, drunk folk, and general scottish life to preserve and represent what my experience is like right now, like a time capsule. social media notification sounds are designed to release serotonin, which is what i’d like my music to do, to make me, and other people happy, and in using these manipulative noises in a positive way, i like to think i’m taking back the power of the manipulation.’ proc fiskal is adventurous and thoughtful as a producer, and at the young age of 21, his debut album is very advanced in its ideas and execution

the american pop duo ‘made in france’ has been making waves on the parisian stage with their retro style evocative of the great girl groups of the 60 s (the shirelles, the ronnettes, the shangri-las). this album follows the release of music video clips for the singles -beau brown- and -burn-. musicians and songwriters bathed in the pop music of the 50 s - 70 s from their native usa, johannah cantwell and laura woody take us through the ups and downs of their lives in paris with joyful melodies and self-deprecating humor. the album has undercurrents of surf rock and motown, with riffs from organ, harpsichord, sitar and timpani supporting their texts, which are decidedly of their time. produced and arranged by franck hedin and nathalie loriot (the shuffles, lafayette, howlin’jaws…), recorded by fred carrayol at mercredi 9 studio in paris, the album was both mixed by fred and etienne colin.

discobar re-launches in search of other galaxies with its second outing from toulouse-based duo zendid. they take us on three voyages through the electro-infused house grooves they made their name with, while still finding time to bring in mayaan nidaam for a remix. space has us seeing stars right from the start, with an alien menagerie conversing over a strict-form beat. the bassline on virgin virgin is big enough to give you butterflies, tempered by stellar synths and wordless vocal clips. berlin 6 takes the bass for a lighter walk and finally, mayaan nidam remixes space into a nebulous and reflective place, pads breaking through the thick atmosphere mid-track for a moment of zero gravity meditation.

this is a collection of works from british musician gp hall, recorded between 1994 and 1999. for over four decades, guitar in hand hall encountered many styles, jazz, blues, flamenco, rock, folk, and classical improvisation. all contributed to the creation of his unique style. emerging from the british blues boom of the 1960’s, he then followed a long and winding path through various scenes and cultures. in spain, he was influenced by flamenco master manitas del plata before touring europe with liverpool band casey jones & the governors. he was commissioned three times (twice by the arts council of great britain) for original music and was immersed in the avant-garde scene of the 1970’s as an improviser, a pioneer of electric flamenco and a composer of large-scale ensemble pieces. during the 1980’s hall turned his focus to soundtrack music before reinventing himself as the solo performer he is today. with this strong foundation he branched into a tactile expression of his craft, discovering a new style which he called industrial sound sculptures. these sonic compositions are performed on electric and acoustic guitars as well as the six-string bass and are played with various techniques and implements including slides, battery fans, the psaltery bow, razors, toys, velcro and crocodile clips which are fed through sound processors to create a rich sonic environment.

futureboogie open their 2017 account with a new release from lizards, the newcastle based duo otherwise known as lee forster and james hadfield. after appearances on labels like leng records, join our club and not an animal records, lizards strut their stuff across two original tracks, whilst man of the moment lord of the isles weighs in with a superb remix. the percussion driven house of “tzatziki” kicks of the release, wrapped in warm and inviting pads and piano riffs. shades of old school chicago house meet sun-kissed balearic vibes on this early morning riser, as the heavyweight bass sounds curl around the raw drum programming and illuminating keys sprinkle over the production. on “aloof”, the tempo is taken down somewhat, as a bass line wanders over a steady kick and otherworldly ambient sounds and hushed vocal clips lazily glide over the 4/4 arrangement. as the track unfurls, more melodic and percussive elements come into play, blossoming into a something quite epic and unique. with a slew of releases for quality imprints like permanent vacation, firecracker, mule musiq and esp institute, neil mcdonald, aka lord of the isles, serves up a deliciously chugging version of aloof. gurgling bass and marching handclaps are dowsed in dramatic synth sweeps and glacial tones, as the good lord takes us on a monumental ride.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

bass culture reach that magnificent milestone of 50 releases with an extra special ep from someone who has become part of labels inner circle, the infallible mr g. set up in 2009 by paris stalwart djulz, bass culture records has maintained a consistently high level of music, crossing from techno into house and back again, always with a focus on quality over quantity. mr g delivers two special gems from his arsenal of weaponary to mark the 50th bsss culture release. the first, * transient* sees mr g in contemplative mood, taking a studied approach with this deep, soulful cut. softened pads are drizzled over a punchy low end, with tough, crisp beats supporting a stirring vocal which urges everybody to get up on their feet. the nineties organ lick gives it an almost sorrowful feel, and those pads continue to takes us up to the skies. a beauty. on the flip, * crumple zone* goes straight for the jugular with a driving b-line, alarming stabs and finger-clicking percussion to get that head nodding. combined with garbled, hypnotic vocal clips, its a mesmerising, eyes down cut for the late night heads. towards the latter part of the track, a naughty riff comes in and adds another layer of sleaze to proceedings. and there you have it, mr g proves yet again why he is such a all-round don and bass culture celebrates 50 releases with panache.

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!

two of paris’ most respected artists get together for their second collaborative extended player this year. dan ghenacia and chris carrier have been entrenched in the electronic scene in their hometown for a long while now, both men building a strong rep through consistently great music and dj performances. earlier this year they joined forces on ‘just a sin’, released via carrier’s adult only label, now they’re back with the follow-up on apollonia. across three deadly tracks, the duo explore their love of music making machines to the fullest – each track taking its name from ‘sweet heart’, translated into different languages. ‘schatzi’ works off a modular synth, bursting out of the blocks with a wobbly bassline which supports a range of subtle effects together with infrequent vocal clips. as the track progresses warm rising pads and female vocal snippets create an entrancing atmosphere. next up we get an arabian twist with ‘habibi’. a pervading air of mystery presents itself right from the off, with warped voices lurking in the background as the rhythm lures you into its murky groove. as the track progresses more eerie pads and effects are layered over the stepping bassline giving it a very creepy feel. finally, french vibes comes through with ‘cherie’ on side b. the track draws its energy from the busy, though crisp, percussive elements and a b-line that groans in unison with the beats. a simple chime remains present throughout, keeping it minimal yet interesting.

shawn osullivan of up and coming new york new wave bands led er est and further reductions, brings us the latest release on wt. the easiest description would be drop bass network meets berghain dub techno meets the new sound of amsterdam with a little bit of acid and industrial sprinkled in, but you should listen to the clips yourself to decide. shawn takes synths, drummachines, a sequencer and some effects and records one take on a stereo track. this leaves room for wild mistakes, personal moments, and blown out sound. its a classic techno sound that sounds like it should have been done before, but hasnt.

continuing the exploration of bristol 4/4 variants, immerse proudly offers forth this decisive two-tracker from the prodigious mind of jacob martin, better know as hodge. you might be more familiar with hodge from his work as part of outboxx, who we proudly debuted on ime025. that said, he first surfaced last year with the deadly conjecture on another fine bristol institution, pollen. one thing rings true in any of the output hodge is associated with, melody. shirking the safety of sterile mechanics that so many producers hide behind, he tackles interplaying notes and harmonies with a fearless exuberance. opening track the fall kicks off on a jerky groove and ice-cold organ murmurs, gently easing in layers and clips of sound with the same joie de vivre as akufen and other micro-house progenitors. ‘crush’ kicks off on a more decidedly broken tip, keeping the twostep shuffle slow and easy as whispers of garage skip in between the warm pads. the overriding vibe on hodge’s ep is one of unpretentious, good times tunage.

akiko kiyamas latest release features four tracks of intricate drum programming, bringing her characteristic warmth to the groove with their ghostly whispered vocal samples and the clicking and clanking poly-rhythmic sound made famous by the legendary berlin imprint, perlon. the first track, carnival, brings all the fun of the fair, a swirl of coloured lights barely glimpsed amongst the heaving throngs of somewhere like bar 25, followed on by an abstract slow burner which sneaks up on you with its sneezed vocal snippets and jangling bassline. talon, a real dancefloor creeper, clips along insistently and the final track, with its bass-guitar and pulsing synth line rounds of the record in perfect ethereal fashion. as akiko puts it herself, >deepness, depression, beauty, irony, fun - these are keywords for my music also my life itself<. you can definitely feel that there is much more thought put into these productions than just purely the need to move people on the dancefloor.

uk born, berlin based producer, ed davenport, is the latest artist to debut on nrk music, with an awesome two track release. >curtain call< and >overdub in am< showcase davenports smooth, deep tech-house sounds, heavy on the dub side!
davenport has already enjoyed positive attention on his releases for esteemed labels such as poker flat, liebe*detail, vidab and district of corruption. recent remixes for len faki on cocoon, and guy j on jon digweeds bedrock label, are also helping to bring his name to the forefront of the scene.
his debut nrk release features a remix by nrks nick harris. >curtain call< is a heavyweight, tribal workout, with plenty of rolling percussion amongst its nagging vocal clips and big, twisted pads. >overdub...< is a dub-heavy houser, an extremely well produced, warm and hypnotizing, deep dancefloor track.

praezisa rapid 3000 are robert guschel, david junghans and henrik jacobsen. coming from different styles of music they found each other to start making music. loving techno, drum & bass, dubstep and indie they created the praezisa-sound: complex, harmonic, organic, which eradiates quickness through native instruments. in doing so there is much humor in this supposed to be earnest music. this ep tries to depict the spectrum of what the three guys love: from bass-music to easy listening – and house: good guy mikesh & filburt, known through releases on permanent vacation, liebe*detail and mirau give the debut of praezisa rapid 3000 a remix.

hot steppin remix package from some of the capitals finest. limited pressing with hand-sprayed custom jackets. a perfect little package of remixes from londons flint kids. after their great 1st release they set their radar a little further afield to net the talents of the brilliant point b and scanone for remix duties. the results are, as youd expect, precise and bass heavy. check the clips here - a good all rounder for fans of combat for sure. the 12inch is finished off nicely with adurgy dark-stepper from the flint kids themselves fitting in perfectly with the rest of the cuts on display here
