thomas leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on cherry red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this emotional rescue reissue 12-. opener -saving grace- is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while -tight as a drum- heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft fx to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for leer s poetic chat over the top. bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. honing in on the weirder qualities of leer s work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!

rye rye - real name ryeisha berrain - began performing at the age of 16, and a chance meeting with blaqstarr resulted in their 2006 club hit ‘shake it to the ground, heralding an impressive list of collaborations including diplo, robyn, toddla t, m.i.a. and more, with rye rye touring with the latter throughout 2007 and 2008 and appearing in the video for her global smash paper planes.

airhead has put out some great music this year. kicking off with the radiophonic ice of kazzt for mumdance s different circles and just recently the low slung cristobal on ps records his production chops get bolder by the minute. it s no surprise seeing as he spent much of the previous year producing key tracks for the incredible -1-800 dinosaur presents trim- album alongside bullion and boothroyd as well as regularly touring and writing with long-time musical partner james blake. back with another 12- on hemlock, his first since 2014 s rolling october / macondo this time the sound is dustier, warmer, but packing twice the punch all the while retaining his signature understated wild-man groove. both tracks are capable on dancefloor whilst richly layered, packed with detail and arranged for maximum connectivity with contemporary beat styles such as house, techno and breaks. what happened to ricky martin? shaded is the twisted latin stepper you didn t know you needed, so much, right now. polished drums dug into a tweaky sci-fi soundbed make way for the curveball drop not every dj will be able to style out but those brave few that do will reap the reward. captain, we have an incoming transmission. by now, antipolo will be on the long-range scanners of a several fleets in this sector and is finally ready for replication and deployment. beaming out to the far reaches of the dancefloor we have bass, breakbeats and synth hooks but not as we know it together forming an advanced composite bond of extreme strength and malleability.

a trailblazing radio 1 show, unparalleled club-nights and a promising label, the 1-800 dinosaur crew are undoubtedly a focal point for all tastemakers alike. with a string of understated 12” releases, 1-800 dinosaur are now set to unveil their first full-length release. anchored by trim’s polarising narrative, ‘1-800 dinosaur presents trim’ is a collaborative endeavour featuring a slew of 1-800 members and affiliates, including: happa, dan foat, airhead, james blake, klaus boothroyd and bullion. outspoken and sharp, trim’s introspectively sinister delivery weaves hypnotically between the 1-800 crews’ varying soundscapes. emerging yorkshire producer happa - who’s stock continues to rise with each release – puts forward a tribal-like march on ‘before i lied’, with trim eerily advising to “be careful who you laugh amongst”. already in circulation, the videogame like progression of ‘rpg’ seeps with blake’s signature off-kilter soul, feeding the subversive nature that trim revels in.

after putting out releases from the likes of uk rave legend warlock and baltimore rapper rye rye produced by bullion, dave maclean of django djangos kick + clap label announces tom furses run to me suite with because music, due out 9th october. on run to me furse has mapped out the ep as one opus divided into five cohesive parts. referencing early techno it has one foot in cologne and the other in detroit, with its tightly worked, precise machino-florescence, condensed and upfront, and free of the pomposity that abounds in the genre. a sound enamored with kraftwerk, juan atkins and yello, it underpins a latent narrative on themes of love, machines and obliteration.

blludd, the natural fusion of bullion and judd. since meeting in 2011, jesse hackett of elmore judd and nathan jenkins (bullion) have been writing and recording songs together as musical relations.

initially alfonso muskedunder was just the nickname for my newborn son alf, but the character soon started leading it s own life. interpreted for this single by a bunch of good people, such as deetron (jazzy-ish housey-ish), bullion (main vocal funky latin house mix... or not. it s vocal though), mungolian jetset (acid mambo deep in the forest, quattro formaggio pizza style) and the mysterious tangoterje (dub mambo especial), the icing on the cake finally came in the form of a fully animated music video courtesy of bendik kaltenborn and espen friberg. kind of tricky to explain exactly what goes on in that one, guess you have to see for yourself...

california analog dream is the new single taken from the vondelpark debut album seabed. tracing the sonic history of the song from initially being a highlight on the bands debut ep sauna to inclusion on the debut full-length, feels like uncovering the story of the band that produced it. on the songs initial version rainsburys voice kept you at arms length. on seabed his vocal take draws you in, feeling magnetic and intense. it is on this song in particular that you can really mark the changes that vondelpark have been through over the past 18 months of recording. rainsbury describes seabed as a coming of age record, and that is something that could just as easily apply to the impressive transformation vondelpark have made during its conception. on remix duties is fellow r&s artist bullion who always delivers the goods with his remixes and productions, on this mix he seems to be channeling a funky lower east side new york vibe, circa 1979. next up are dfa artists factory floor who deliver a signature industrial acid workout perfect for the dancefloor. pressing on white vinyl.

otdxi is the newest installment in the classic r&s compilation series. previous installments have been responsible for rounding up the labels roster at the time and presenting their finest tracks to a wider audience, and have gone onto become classics in their own rights. with r&s again re-positioned as one of the most forward thinking electronic labels and with an enviable roster of cutting edge young talent it makes perfect sense to relaunch the series. disc one contains highlights from the last 18 months and includes contributions from blawan, lone and untold whose classic r&s influences are worn on their sleeves. tracks from james blake, pariah and the chain take cues from a distinctly uk sound, which the label has been keenly following from its new london base, and in cmyk have the biggest single from 2010.
