our next release is coming from phil evans. phil is also part of the new generation of dj’s and producers that are hailing from the rhein-main area around frankfurt. together with his best mate markus sommer he is running the label pager records. he caught our attention already a while ago and so we were quite happy to receive the tracks for this ep from him. he has a lot of personality in his productions already and his musical range is also quite large going from hip hop to house, but also more stripped down stuff or chicago house references can be found in his music selection and influences. besides that he is a lovely and very sympathetic young man and so it is definitely worth keeping an eye on him, because he is on fire.

the first release from new vinyl only label cherub records. the ‘figure of state’ ep features four tracks: two original cuts from london upstart william earl in analogue work out mode. doppelate’s remix of the ‘figure of state’ on the a-side is an down-tempo, atmospheric trip whilst pépe’s remix of ‘stokey waltz’ takes us into blissfully uplifting, arpeggiated territory.

freda & jackson’s msh002 is the second offering from sydney’s moonshoe records and their first ep on the label as a duo. in 2016 the two beat-makers burst onto the scene and further-introduced the label with a pair of singles, persius & sumluv to a warm response at home and abroad. msh002, although predominantly house-cuts, sees the pair draw largely on their hip-hop influences with a heavy use of sample chops and and raw percussion. the 5-track maintains an emotional undertone of sadness from front-to-back while each tune holds up as a stand-alone journey.

bror records presents its third instalment with a split 12-inch record with two original tracks. delivered from the west coast of sweden, city of gothenburg.
arkajo (genius of time / aniara recordings) returns for the a side offering with the highly effective five minute break workout “vamp”. a track initially presented as part of arkajo’s live set now finally sees the light of day as part of this vinyl. on the flip, bror presents the debut of dj lily, who comes through with the atmospheric techno trip “folia”.

the second instalment of the enigmatic olympos series comes in the form of apollo, recognised as the god of music, art, medicine and plague amongst other traits. the a side gets underway with the hypnotic cutter (a1) (ena), that intersects its atmospheric layers and solid bassline to a trippy effect while a2 s (a2) (duo) consists of syncopated percussive elements swathed in blissful pads and acidic segments. flipside s (b1(tria) returns to denser and more psychedelic waters that leads nicely to the breezy and gloaming vibes of (b2) tessera). all in all, a proper immersive head trip. ltd hand stamped.

back to the vinyl rules, spectral rebel is proud to present its collaboration with the dutch duo abstract division, featuring two originals and two remixes by mike storm and re:axis. the good architecture of -convergent- opens the ep with a slow but strong climax, hypnotic rhythms and ambient sounds create an elegant atmosphere, surrounded by a resonant voice. -divergent- shows a deeper concept of techno: the emotional melody keeps the track into a new landscape, merging with a heavy basslines. mike storm is a familiar name to the label. his remix reshapes the original track -convergent- and takes us into an interstellar trip through the cosmos. the atmosphere is intense. re:axis version of -divergent- is a high-energy piece and it s definitely the powerful techno punch of this ep. classic drum sounds combine with vibrating kicks and some loopy cuts. spr007 is an ecstasy for ears and a proper bang for dancefloors.

the new york-based (u)nity is made up of michael valeanu, axel tosca laugart, chris smith, max cudworth and amaury acosta. they formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore afro-cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. they say they ve been influenced by everyone from chucho valdes to art blakey to led zeppelin to kendrick lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. guarapachanga is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at the new school. it s derived from the style known as guarapachangeo the most advanced form of cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. on this recording, (u)nity is graced with a guest performance by grammy award winner pedrito martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on cuban music. martinez is also a priest in the yoruba religion and a historian of cuban culture. over its eight and a half minutes, guarapachanga twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. the whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the afro-cuban essence that is the bands lifeblood. the white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous djs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. if you didnt know guarapachanga was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a loft classic, yet it s also as fresh and exciting as anything you ll hear this year.

born marco sterk, he certainly doesnt come from a standard dj background. a former skate rat who grew up loving american post-hardcore and 90s hip-hop as much as early warp records, hes been affiliated over the years with amsterdam institutions such as rush hour, red light records (where you ll find him most weekdays!) and, of course, dekmantel itself. still, thers no question that hes always followed his own path, even during the years that playing his favorite records meant that he was occasionally clearing dancefloors

after seemingly coming out of nowhere, your old droog set the internet aflame in 2014 with his self-titled debut ep, catching the attention of bloggers all over the web from new york magazine’s vulture to nahright. before long, conspiracy theories started and people began to posit that droog was another older, legendary new york rapper in disguise. profiled in the new yorker, droog (meaning “friend” in russian) set the record straight about who he was: a twenty-something ukrainian immigrant who fell in love with hip-hop when he arrived in south brooklyn as a small child. the timbre of his voice resembled that of a hip-hop legend but droog’s content had more to it than street dreams or observations from a project window. his music reflected his own unique life experience as he referenced everything from sports, to crime, to seinfeld and c-span in his rhymes. he was an intelligent hoodlum with a stand-up comedian’s sense of humor—unafraid to be as self-deprecating as he was self-aggrandizing.
on his critically-acclaimed debut, the your old droog lp, he vowed to “bring back storytelling” and now on his sophomore album, packs, droog delivers on that promise.
