following last month’s uncompromising ‘yearn’ ep from j.tijn, pennyroyal continues to invest in techno’s kicks of tomorrow by welcoming myler into our family circle. with releases on fifth wall and apothecary compositions already under his belt, myler powers forward with three hits of medicinal grade club fuel. the saturated drum bump of lead track ‘gorilla biscuits’ dunks hard with its rolling groove and percussive hook, playing out with the bounce of 90’s strictly rhythm counterpointed by fierce snarls and switch up’s that evoke 90s’ reinforced. the shortbread edit is for the happy faced warehouse crew, pushing the same driving groove through some toughening acid treatments. ‘carol vorderman’ is the most abrasive of the pack spitting out stressed kicks and crumbling stabs for the won’t leave the venue crew.

bristol music has always stood strongest as an alternative to the lowest common denominator, and so it is with brstl as the label continues to provide a platform to previously undiscovered talent in the underbelly of the citys flourishing house scene. following lauded debuts from shanti celeste and jay l, the sixth installment in the series turns to another unknown in the shape of samuel. as with other releases on brstl, 006 is made up of two distinct halves. on the a-side, >numberuma< delivers machine driven house of a rugged and charming nature. the drums switch up with playful intent but largely centre around a forward-charging 4/4 pulse with a faint hint of tropical flavour rubbed into the groove. meanwhile the limber lead keys speak of sunnier days through a cracked lens while the accompanying chord swells intone an equally uplifting and nostalgic message. while from the outset the track may be wrought from simple ingredients, the dynamic interplay between the different elements belies the producers years. on the flip, >groove therapy< opts for a more esoteric approach made up of long, dreamy lead-ins full of distant pads and delicate percussion and transitions as smooth as silk. indeed this track makes a smart foil to >numberuma<, choosing to snake its way into the subconscious through delicate melodic content and an undulating beat rather than rambunctious rhythm. slow-release filters draw that aforementioned pad in before sending it out to sea once more, and all the while the stripped back drums tick out a hypnotic chant. once again a pair of unique tracks loaded with character prove brstl to be an essential outpost for the most creative 4/4 music emanating from the west country.

derek kaye married his schoolboy passions of music and electronics in 1973 when he constructed his first disco sound system, aged just 13. prior to this, with dj equipment something of a rarity in those days, he created a custom setup that bypassed the need for a mixer by rewiring his turntables in such a way that he could flip the sound from one deck to another, and installed a switch that would dip the music so a microphone from a portable cassette player could be used to announce the song on rotation. his work soon grew in sophistication and a new console was built, with his schoolmate, greg wilson, buying derek s old rig, thus beginning his own well-documented dj career.

limited to 250 copies !!! on august 4th 2011, the sony music warehouse in enfield, north london was attacked during riots and looting that affected many areas of the capitol over the course of a week. the warehouse burned down completely, taking with it millions of cds and vinyl stored by the distributor pias including the back catalogue of freerange. the blow was devastating for many labels, with the logistics of manufacture and minimal insurance payouts meaning that recreating the entirety of their old stock was completely impossible and many releases have been lost forever as a result.
