like a scottish relation to the recent faster grime productions lewisham mc novelist has coined ruff sound, proc fiskal ups the energy of the stark cubist rhythms of the early grime of wiley and ruff sqwad by accelerating and retooling them to fit the faster 160bpm grid, engineering a delirious hybrid that also subtly makes explicit the relationship between grime and jungle and happy hardcore.

all tracks have been inspired by cubist art, this creates results in a graph and cutting sound. effective techno for the dance floor and ambient futuristic passages.

unlucky 013? ha! this one’s a pearler. multi talented producer red rack’em climbs up the fertile n s y d e spirit tree for this glowing summer release in the form of the ‘nothing without you’ ep. a mutation from the same skunky-soul strain of n s y d e 005 by skymark / lady blacktronika. the title cut is a result of a red rack’em tour through the south pacific, connecting with inkswell and fam. what was meant to be a rack’em / inkswell track instead ended up with australian vocalist, now berlin diamond in the rough: misumami liberally sprinkling her magic throughout. with a proposed subject matter based around missing loved ones while apart, misumami weaves an enchanting story of longing, and matters of the heart, through signature sleek, clever, floor ready rack’em production. flip for ‘love beat’ and here we get red rack’em- the funky technician fanboy, dusty fingered native tongue devotee, and closet jazz dancer. the loose, bumping drum programming and sculpted, cubist jazz sampling (inna heavy mandalorian funk fashion) weld this nocturnal seduction dance together. this is a late night groover, an eyes closed on the dance floor vibration. both sides are modern, vital, considered house music, where the problems of the world dissolve in a heads down- vibes up situation. mastered by pole at scapemastering so you know it’s gonna bang...

achterbahn d amours machinefunk opus, odd movements gets reworked with 4 sonically diverse remixes. detroit don marcellus pittman kicks things off with a massive, unsettling flip of holy roman empire. the italian producer chevel is up next with a virtuosic take on the lps title track. his cubist, artfully restrained version ends with over a minute of icy techno snap. convextion, as well, chooses to hold back for maximum impact, infusing the moody passagen with subdued electro bounce. finally, sw. imbues the duos konigstr with dubbed-out breakbeat pressure, occasionally allowing the original acid line to seep through a skittering rave rhythm.

cromie s bubbling, spacious house sound first drew critical acclaim last year on the sold out 12- vines / pyrex (peach001), a collaboration with fellow la producer sage caswell. now, peach is thrilled to present cromies solo debut ep inner knows, a revved up set of idiosyncratic dancefloor weapons. how to stop a bulldozer, a rotating helix of synth stabs, warped vocals and low-end torque warrants it s epic title. elsewhere, flan functions like a potent concentrate of 22nd century funk. inner knows kicks off side b with a swirling late night house jam that flirts with the deeper corners of the genre. another fixture in la s electronic scene, suzanne kraft (running back, esp institute, pharoahs) closes out the record with a cubist reading of flan. on his solo debut, cromie s creative depth and attention to detail belies his freshness to the game. regular sets at las club called rhonda and various underground happenings in the sprawling southland have taught him some valuable lessons. if he can deliver this many distinct sounds on a single record, we cant wait to hear what’s next.

the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

nice price deal !!! this is dasein, the opening potion of milyoos (aka tommy wilson) debut ep and the second release on subeenas new opit records. dasein attempts to grapple with existence, temporality and substance and what could be a more perfect description of these warped sonics- perpetual motion purely of the moment. multitude makes you feel like a tourist at an off-world bazaar, a strange landscape with a slug-bass bubble undercarriage and inquisitive wide-eyed synths. fayoh leads in with in a harold budd doing house piano before being pounced on by clipped vocal tics and odd blocks of cubist sound all underpinned by a funky beat and quite frankly its gorgeous. if there is a strand of coherence across the ep then its an almost exotic one- these are curiosities, virtual ships in bottles, they are not narrative pieces even if they are in constant motion. only two releases in and opit records is clearly going to avoid easy categorisation- milyoos debut is something to get mighty excited about and i await further transmissions with baited breath...
