ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s second ep on his label apus apus features the track “roter gitterling“ (eng. basket stinkhorn / red cage) on the a side and „tintenfischpilz“ (engl. octopus stinkhorn / devil s fingers) on the flip side. a. roter gitterling the fleshy red cage of this kind of mushroom reminds of a merging of an upside down shopping string bag and an alien. not allowing any objection, the track strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of this strange being. a fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. in a very narrative fashion the track gathers speed and flocks diverse soundscapes and disembogues in a break of harmonical expanse. conciliatory and in a hedonistic way the bass drum eventually stitches together what belongs to each other. b. tintenfischpilz this bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom evokes at first glance the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. as in a science fiction movie four to six tentacles sprout and raise out of a common stinkhorn and later spread into a star shape look. in an unparalleled manner this stunning progression is executed musically by eulberg with a high degree of elaboration. all done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

2020 repress !! about the bamboo recordings: jacobus derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. there he would hear music from africa, china, japan, indonesia, south america and beyond. he started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone. he met hanyo van oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, the jones . derwort was playing the sax, van oosterom the drums. they started conducting sound experiments in hanyo’s small cellar in the dutch village of krimpen aan den ijssel. in the early eighties they made their first cassette, the kallikatsou . hanyo started the ambient collective chi in 1983. jacobus was the first musician to join chi. together, they went to the magic rock “the kallikatsou” on the island of patmos, greece. here, hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. he heard the sound of chi in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. being together at the kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of chi, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...

2020 repress - ruff cherry debuts on midgar with the retro-futuristic “ritual ep” delivering four spaced out cuts costantly spanning between dub, sci-fi ambient and deep techno. the first track ritual is a dubbed out concoction of african drums, solemn atmospheres and bleeping circuits of a meditative machine. the a side closes with the broken beat planet outlaw, a super chilled-out groove meets entrancing heavenly pads. mysterians on the flipside opens with a short intro before an eerie high pitched drum breaks in, embracing uplifting soundscapes and suddenly crossed by flying transistors. the last track on the vinyl is the deep and tribal endless world (future mix) bringin sounds from celebratory steps around the fire.

while being best known for creating deeply immersive live psychoacoustic experiences, the london based pataphysical have allowed us to use periphera , the fruits of their debut studio work, as the label s eighth musical oblation. it would have been an exercise in futility to try and replicate the immediacy of their live performances on this record, but we feel that across these 8 disparate tracks inner worlds have been rendered real. through the careful positioning of field recordings and the creation of soundscapes somewhat reminiscent of heyday mille plateau the group have held fast to a desire to craft involved and captivating synthesis.

2019 repress! stuttgart based producer detmolt returns to underyourskin records for his second ep, ‘memories’, on the label this year. the ep’s name giving track is a downtempo synth led pleasant fellow accompanying its listener through the different seasons of the year that are reflected by the various changes of chords within the track that still manage to connected each change in harmony. the ep’s second track, ‘madlen’ is also dedicated to the label’s downtempo sound and starts off with an detailed enriched synth before a nodding bass sets in and defines the groove and pace of the track. in the course of the track the catchy synth is loosend and supported by piano chords as well as diverse soundscapes in the same tonality. ‘kaos’ hits off strong with a lead synth that changes within the course of the track and is subbed by different chords in the treble and bass frequencies to spread its atmospheric soundscapes on all possible musical levels. the ep’s last track comes from paul valentin who remixes ‘madlen’. paul’s approach highlights the given synthchords which are worked into dreamy yet fordward going soundscapes that still keep the original’s downtempo vibe but makes you lose your mind higher spheres.

shape-shifting post-punk quasi-legends bourbonese qualk are finally getting a bit of the shine they so richly deserve after years in obscurity, not least thanks to the retrospective compilation on mannequin back in 2015. now platform 23 are reissuing their classic album -laughing afternoon, originally released back in 1983 and having lost none of its impact. its a slippery, shape-shifting creation that veers between uneasy soundscapes and gutter-dwelling funk, with some truly visionary signal processing, electronic textures and more besides in the mix. its a crime this crew arent held in the same regard as their other early 80s post-industrial peers, but at least the wrongs are being righted now.

contemporary house merged with space-age jazz & broken beat from copenhagen newcomer nejrup on debut release manda backed by a uniquely off-kilter remix from london soul stalwart k15 (eglo / wild oats) manda is a selection of intricate compositions for the dancefloor with a jazz centered approach to combining dance grooves with modular soundscapes & live instrumentation. for nejrup, a self-learned synthhacker, pianist and producer from copenhagen, his debut manda is a result of years of experimentation and never-ending practice and noodling on his fender rhodes & homebuilt synth collection. delivering a compositional complexity influenced by radiohead and floating points, while letting his tunes simmer with airy synths and improvised live instrumentation combined with a love for depthful harmonies. k15 backs the release with a soothing, heavily syncopated remix, as only he could do it. the londoner, whose soulful touch and ear for melody has earned him high status in the jazz encompassing house- and broken beat circuit, through kyle hall’s ‘wild oats’ and alexander nut’s ‘eglo records’ and as center of the culross close outfit.
