front left records founder elad magdasi is next to appear on sinfols anagram label with four stirring cuts entitled liquid dreams this june. originally hailing from tel aviv, magdasi moved to berlin in 2013 where he has immersed himself in the scene whilst honing his craft in the studio. primarily a platform for his own productions, he launched front left records in 2015 and later debuted on anagrams phasing faces va in 2017 alongside anetha, d?vide and sinfol. he now returns to the label with a four track release of his own. liquid dreams opens the release with a mesmerizing spoken word sample, twinkling melodies and layered atmospherics whilst sporadic hats rattle throughout. thudding kicks, escalating synths and quivering bass then combine together in water damage before moving into the mesmerizing silver lights, which conjures up an otherworldly aesthetic courtesy of arpeggiated notes and crashing cymbals. lastly, never let go exhibits a cacophony of elements such as crystalline chords and a meandering bassline that generate a heightening suspense from start to finish.

oddball space disco/fnk tracks, composed between 1970 and 1985. big tip! a master of the mixing board, from the late 60s until the 90s bernard estardy was the wizard of french musical recordings. as head of cbe studios, he shaped everything from gérard mansets concept albums to claude françois hit singles, françoise hardys delicate tear-jerkers and michel sardous soul-stirrers. this giant had his hand in the whole range of mainstream french music by making his studio a veritable playground for experimentation. his legendary album la formule du baron, released in 1969, and the eight lps of production music he made between 1974 and 1978 for tele music are vivid proof. in the cbe studio, which she runs today, his daughter julie estardy discussed his singular career.

after the first vinyl release (analog dub sessions) dub communication is back on 7”. this time frenk is using his korg ms20 to lay down an analog militant dub bass foundation. creating subs, stabs and catchy melody lines. a live played melodica, dipped in spring verbs, adding a human touch to the mix. futhermore we got atmospheric chords and heavy drums rhythms, as we know, frenk likes to produce. for the b side, there’s a heavy remix from belgium dub producer digid. his signature bass growl takes over, filtering and phasing through the audio spectrum. he adds more weight to the drums and new melodies on top. from the half time to the steppers rhythm as frenk took it the other way around.

it goes without saying that space has always been central to techno – both in terms of its cosmic and futuristic trajectory, as well as in the spatial dimensions of sonic elements. etapp kyle’s first full ostgut ton ep release sees the ukrainian-born, berlin- based berghain resident emphasizing the connection between the two, while avoiding techno’s overt intergalactic clichés. by partially linking to his continuum ep (unterton, 2016), the results are four tracks of pristine, sci-fi minimalism, propelled by ambient synths and percussive explosions in distant skies – more utopian than dystopian. opener “alpha” establishes the cosmic theme from the get go, with chord swells and a whirring, phasing spacewind panning across the stereo image. while a subdued kickdrum gets things started, it’s the rhythmic interplay between dynamic high-hats and halled-out rimshots that guide the track through space. from there, “quantum” on a2 strips the voyage down to a glowing, unwavering arpeggiated synth line, interspersed with twisted, high-pitched bells and updated 909- esque snare patters.

all source material recorded in gran paradiso, july 2015 engineered at odd phasing and echoes, amsterdam nl photography bjnilsen bjnilsen is a composer and sound artist based in amsterdam. his work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the arctic region of norway and russia. his original scores and soundtracks have featured in theatre, dance performances and film. celebrating 27 years as a recording artist massif trophies is the first solo release for editions mego. in 2015 he set off on a month long hiking trip in gran paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contributes, this became one of the main inspirations for the album, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms and rock avalanches. it is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. the five pieces contains narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip.

damien lynch enjoys countryside a drive in the twilight hour. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, brunette opens with a straight-ahead techno thump of hi-hats and a pulsating 16th-note bassline—a subtle playing field composed solely with a rare 1970’s italian machine, the godwin drummaker 32, unearthed from the secret back room of a music shop in rural ireland where it hid among wonderful vintage russian synths and oddball electronics. this elegant track drips with warm and phasing pads, gentle staccato keys and beautifully simple arpeggios that blur every now and then—all affirming damien’s less-is-more ideology. with side b’s forced relax, damien continues to exercise his restraint, arranging his instruments in a band-like fashion, affording each player the sonic space to project their individual qualities whilst supporting an overall dialogue. there is a soft ebb and flow to every machine’s role, whether the swelling of bass or the interplay of percussive keys, but when these characters arrive in one place, the result is a tranquil euphoria. these two songs will accept you for who you truly are.

returning to his original home for this ep, it represents yet another left turn on the ukkonen musical path. the man himself says: *once again i want to change direction a little, whilst still keeping all the things i love in there - the polyrhythms, phasing loops, ambiguous timings and so on* however this set sees the tempo looser than before. we are not sure if post-techno actually ever happened, but maybe post-discotronica is, er, in the post. anyway, we liked the tracks so much that we once again went the extra mile with the physical product - a clear and white marbled thing of beauty, cut to 10 inch size in a 12 inch pressing.

for the next installment in the dc ltd series, drumcode present a three-track ep from the spanish pairing of psyk and alberto pascual - both increasingly familiar names on the circuit thanks to their work for plus 8, figure, analytictrail and sleaze. ascent leads off the ep with what is sure to prove to be a popular combination of upbeat old-school keys and resolute marching beats. descent switches things up, treading heavily through a melancholic soundscape of mechanical stabs and harmonic pads. finally, permanent dishes up a solid rhythm track interspersed with distinct rising tones phasing in and out of the mix.

imugem orihasam, offers a deep and introspective relation ep continuing the sistrum tradition of quality underground sounds for the true appreciators. track a1 - relation sets the tone right away, with soothing strings guiding a classic rhythm section into hypnotic territory. slowly, a tapestry of delicate textures evolves around the beats - sure to be the soundtrack to many a late night dancefloor. close your eyes and get inside your mind with this one. track b1 - “mirage” continues down the path of hypnotic, deep techno laid out on relation, toughening up the beats just a bit, with a subby kick and crisp back beat that gives it some extra punch. swirling, phasing strings and metallic, ring modulated tones float above a sub bassline that is sure to make things rumble. this is pure love from japan. track b2 - overlap lights (p. scott edit) - sistrum’s main man, patrice scott, steps in to offer his interpretation of imugem’s “overlap lights,” bringing forth his signature ultra deep, slow building future/classic detroit sound. patrice’s edit is a warm, delicate, masterful arrangement of imugem’s tones and textures - there never seems to be too much going on, just enough to convey his intended message, ever-so-effectively. clutter is left by the wayside and the listener is left with the perfect palette of sonic delights.
