karousel is the new alias from irish producer gavin herlihy. forged in the fires of house and determined by a steely dedication to timeless deep dancefloor theory, the alias begins life on one of the uk s most trusted vinyl labels, illusion recordings. gavin started learning to produce in 2005 and less than a year in scored one of the tracks of the year in 2006 with machine a homework, a techno opus hailed by laurent garnier and dj hell as one of the tracks of the year. over the next few years a move to berlin lead to gigs at clubs like panorama bar, fabric and later circo loco while his productions took root in a variety of different genres and big labels. karousel is the expression of gavins house leanings rooted in the sampling of dusty old jazz and disco records and the use of hardware.

*agraphobia* by la synthesis is considered by many as one of the most beautifully crafted string-driven techno tracks of all time. originally released in 1994 it has received somewhat of a legendary cult status. 21 years later it is now time to breathe new life into this essential track and make it available again for a new generation of electronic music enthusiasts. together with de:tuned, la synthesis handpicked some of their favourite producers to rework the original and the results are mind-boggling to say the least.
uk techno stalwart ben sims adopts his ron bacardi alias for an outing on bass culture records, bringing with him three varying slices of 4x4-based music. djulz has a deep penchant for bass and funk, and this is evident throughout the ep. we get off to a rugged start with rock your body, a deliciously dark slice of grumbling techno. intertwined with the morose bassline is a mysterious, tribal-esque female vocal, warped and twisted to add a primal feel to the track. on the flip, bacardi puts his a different hat on giving us first effort a vivacious funk-laced hybrid, which teases you spitting out intermittent trumpets and other such live instruments. finally, the money/dub goes straight into disco territory with that oh-so-familiar entrancing rhythm that will keep you fixed to its beat from start to finish. that filtered wah-wah guitar is impossible to resist, especially when combined with such crisp percussion. sheer quality from monsieur bacardi

behind is an expansive collection for hackford, who draws from experimental, process-oriented composition techniques to create sensorially engaging dance music. an ethos of presence, enrichment and dissociation pervades behind - by stripping away the constructed-ness of so much dance music, hackford allows himself to produce music that is as much a joy to create as it is to share. an ambassador of -ecstatic states- as he calls them, hackford s music suggests heightened temporal zones may be ubiquitous if you allow them to be. behind is a proposition of such ecstatic states, its music pulsing vitally at opposite ends of the bpm spectrum. distinctly unmotivated by polemic dialogues around dance music, behind seeks a more soluble musical space for unmitigated engagement. it is music inspired by transitions, no less vital before sunset as it is after the curtain call.

von der reeperbahn ins künstlerviertel - von großer freiheit zur münchner freiheit, von hamburg nach münchen -- genauer gesagt nach schwabing, dem ortsteil münchens, der in den 60er- und 70er-jahren aufgrund der kulturellen vielfalt abseits des sonst eher konservativen münchens (natürlich -- man ist ja in bayern) bei den hipstern schwer angesagt war und noch heute vom damaligen ruhm zehrt. den dazu passenden soundtrack schwabing affairs liefert einmal mehr das kölner diggler label (ob der dritte teil der serie porz affairs heißen wird?), welches erneut die archive nach soundtracks aus der halbwelt durchwühlt hat, um den zumindest musikalischen flair schwabings wiederzubeleben.
