wonder stories heads over the pond for their 24th release finding the aussie/uk collaboration between dawn again (returning from his excellent ep on ws019) and uk underground champion rothmans (known for his vinyl only label of the same name). psychedelic, melodic, and grooving are the name of the game here with timeless odyssey venturing into melancholic ethereal territory while rainbow perch is an uplifting and bubbly affair. on remixes, timothy j. fairplay submits a jacked up sleazy version of timeless odyssey while emile strunz tackles rainbow perch into a 4/4 techno stomper with a new wave ethos.
timothy j fairplay with the first release on nyc label body works. 4 tracks of electro madness with influences ranging from new wave, italo, gigolo/ebm, chicago (acid house & early industrial) & 1890s haunted brothel vibes.
we welcome tim fairplay with his track key to paradox with a remix from iron blu. pressed on a one-sided, hand stamped and numbered standard weight black vinyl release. accompanied by a printed info sheet insert.
selected advent deal. charlois present where is the champion, timothy j. fairplay s first full length solo album. twelve shifting, shuffling and shimmering tracks make up this debut. cruising the highways and byways between proto-techno, horror disco and forlorn wave, fairplay conjures up his creations from metal and smoke. saturated snares, clipped claps and warbling chords are dusted with distortion. and this idea of distortion, manipulation and the blurred line is omnipresent. innocent and sinister, cruel and playful, accepted boundaries are brazenly ignored as engines growl and synthlines soar.
hot on the heels of the co-release between especial and cocktails d amore music of the sfire remixes ep (ees023/cda013) comes an accompanying release with a pair of deeper, stripped back remixes from the inimitable timothy j fairplay and willie burns.
first outing for newly minted glasgow-based label work for love. the inaugural strike comes from none other than timothy j fairplay, the synthesizer warlock known for his involvement in the axis, a loose unit comprising of mutual interests revolving around the studio complex timothy shares with andrew weatherall and his own partner in crimes of the future scott fraser.
stories of prison sees timothy j fairplay returns to emotional response having helped shape the identity of the label in it s infancy with the release of somebody, somewhere back in 2012. a lot of music has come from both artist and label since then, with fairplay s reputation as a solo artist fully established thanks to releases on a myriad of labels. stories of prison is a mini lp rich in the musical intensity fairplay has instilled in all his music to date, yet there is a daring sense of diversity at play too. from the effervescent dubbed out house toughness of opening track -the quay-, fairplay veers into subaquatic breakbeat, deep synth love from outer space chuggers, and other late night sonic treats
collaborations are often the fortune of timing. with andy having moved on since closing the dissident label to launching his cave paintings project to tim s departure from battant and striking out as andrew weatheralls engineer and soon to be co-member of the asphodells, an alliance was born between the two to undertake a series of live jam sessions at eachs respective studios. a love of new wave, new beat, uk bleep and detroit techno all feature in b-ultras and the aptly titled, neu beat. both cuts are heavily soaked in the pitch black, smoke machine funk and strob-laden fug of andys (and co-hort joe hart) infamous world unknown dancefloor. running at around 10 minutes the tracks are essentially an examination of acid houses ideals. clattering hats, throbbing basslines, stabbing keys and doses of 303. keeping it pretty simple but all about a pure groove on and on. backing these up is a remix of b-ultras from jamie paton that accentuates the groove and drags the acid deeper down to some b-boy dub throwdown - with more to follow from all protagonists in 2014.
the 5th release from rothmans plays homage to legendry argentinean defender alberto tarrantini and to mark this 5th release rothmans have provided a team sheet to rival even that infamous 1982 world cup squad.
THE HARALD TONI SCHUMACHER RELEASE (180G VINYL 12 INCH)
12" Vinyl, 180gr UK25.03.13
named in homage to the series of collectable football cards from the 1970s, the rothmans label follows the inaugural mario kempes release with another long-haired icon being given his dues in the form of the harald toni schumacher release, complete with another four tracks of chugging techno-disco. emotional responses timothy j fairplay kicks things off with *off the rails*, an expectedly dark and tense piece of carpenter-esque synth, while lwe writer per bojsen-moller delivers the atmospheric techno of *staying late*, whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. on the flip, steve cooks *noahs arp* takes things a balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while emile strunzs *magnetic* adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated italo swagger.
magic feet are gaining momentum after the superb tommy awards ep, and welcome timothy j fairplay to the fold for their third release. fairplay is a rising star of the uk underground and recently opened proceedings on bird scarer, the new vinyl-only initiative from andrew weatherall, with the sprawling cosmiche flecked brilliance of >the final reel<, and has also contributed to the output of astrolab and world unknown. fairplay has little interest in making functional dance floor records and delivers four cutshere that plough a distinctly epic path through post 100bpm electronic music that is framed by both cinematic and musical references. limited to 300 hundred copies only.
after debuting with an albums worth of experimental, ambient electronic explorations from the hugely talented nyc based jason letkiewicz under his alan hurst moniker, the emotional response label maintains such high standards with their second release. the focus shifts to timothy j fairplay, a uk producer whose growing discography is proving to be impressive too. ears should still be ringing to his world unknown released homage to ancient egypts predilection for psychedelic drugs and its little surprise he has been hand picked for the debut release on sir weatheralls new vinyl initiative bird scarer. the four tracks that make up somebody, somewhere retain that dubby mid tempo poise that permeated fairplays output to date, though he seems to revel in the freedom to experiment emotional response encourages, focusing more on developing expansive patterns of synths on tracks like >aim for the yellow sector< and the title track. special mention too for >i do not believe< which comes on in a deep medi doing digidub style!
weve been huge fans of tims work since the release of his first self-titled ep on astrolab. his analogue sound has been described as both death mulch and rare gloom. for his second work for love twelve, he continues the journey into dark spaces with four more deep synth freakers from his fish island school of synthesis studio. after releases on esteemed labels including emotional response, world unknown, bird scarer, hoga nord, rotters golf club (as the asphodells with andrew weatherall) and his own label crimes of the future which he runs with scott fraser, his debut album where is the champion? was released earlier in the year to critical acclaim. tim will continue to push forward and we feel privileged to see him return for a wfl round two.
timothy j. fairplay is revisiting hoga nord rekords to release the 12inch ep mindfighter: photosensitive electronic music from one of the pillars of the modern meaningful dance music scene. together with scott frasier, t.j.f. is running the record label crimes of the future and he is also known as one half of the asphodells together with andrew weatherall. this is his second release on hoga nord rekords and his first ep on the label.
during their european tour earlier this year, canadian duo jokers of the scene stopped over for a couple of days at club bizarre studio in northern france. the two pair of producers locked up and came up with betaville and breakwater, two killer lo-fi and spaced out tracks. betaville is a fuzzy dream that will make you dance in slow motion with your head in the clouds. boasting a strong melodic and nostalgic feel, it unfolds its warm analog synth pads, old school sequences and drum machine to psychedelic effect. imagine boards of canada wanting to make you dance. even slower is breakwater, a dirtier, chunkier track that ditches the softness of betaville in favour of a more in your face bass line and all together rougher attitude. it chugs along to old fashioned beat box claps and percussion and quirky synth melodies. lastly betaville gets the timothy j fairplay treatment of being violently pulled apart and chucked in all corners. reminiscent of early chemical brothers music, a heavy beat slaps over agressive drugged up analog sound effects while a repetitive, haunting melody screams on top and reverberated vocals whisper in your ears. scary.
exclusive 7inch single in conjunction with mount alalog los angeles presenting crimes of the future label bosses scott fraser and timothy j. fairplay with 2 exclusive cuts of leftfield house and electro psychedelia, very limited copies!
the pinkman sister label charlois continues its journey with a four tracker by gearfreak timothy j. fairplay. this time the operator is pushing his machines into the depths of late 70s giallo scores, which resulted in four haunting, rough house and disco cuts. limited edition with silk screened sleeves!
over the years scott fraser has recorded and remixed for emissions audio output, black nation, wave tech, relish, rush hour and world unknown to name but a few. his latest home is bird scarer for whom he has recorded 9 minutes of low slung machine funk loveliness (as featured on mr weatheralls recent masterpiece mix set). the b side comes courtesy of a remix by mr fairplay who more than reaches the high quality control he always sets himself.
bird scarer is andrew weatheralls new vinyl only limited edition (300) record label.bird scarer 001 is by timothy j fairplay - r.g.c. studio s resident engineer, analogue curator, multi-instrumentalist, remixer and solo artiste. its called the final reel and during its eleven minute duration it passes signposts marked john carpenter, klaus schulze and doris norton.the epic piece has been consolidated into a seven minute remix by mr. weatherall himself, who has also done a limited edition lino print to accompany the first 20 copies.remember, bird scarer is a download free project.
the third release on the world unknown label is a very meaty affair that coincides with the second birthday of the club night in brixton. on side w timothy j. fairplay fuses ancient egypt with late 80s belgium and drops it slap bang into the near future with the monolithic techno beast that is >cleopatra loves the acid<. its already been played in discos and on the bbc by andrew weatherall, for whom tim handles engineering and co-production duties in his day job, and is set to become a pounding anthem on the more adventurous dancefloors over the coming months. side u is a more throbbing psychedelic affair. kalidasa is the production alter-ego of tim rivers who runs the always excellent theacidhouse.com website. it<s exactly the kind of heavyweight midtempo tune that causes sweaty pandemonium at world unknown. if the word balearic still meant now what it did to from 87-92 then thats precisely what youd call this, most likely with the prefix >heavy<. but it doesnt so you cant, or can you?
new cat on the astro lab camp, timothy j fairplay from the battant band, after good releases on kill the dj, andrew weatheralls rotters golf club, live at robert johnson tim gave us couple of great tracks with his best carpenter mood, it was so hard to choose, we took 3 of them and asked our favourite producer mr andrew weatherall to remix one, he turn the sleigh ride/blizzard into this slow techno atmosphere. on the b side astro lab zntn remixed >general arrived< and turned the original into an amazing dancefloor tune, something close to the optimos works.
repress , especial welcomes the debut ep from romanian duo khidja. after remixing baris ks 200 earliering on for the label, here they deliver two eastern influenced pieces of dubby electronics, that are backed with remixes from timothy j fairplay and juju & jordash
beneath the still waters of lonely sound there lays the ruins of howland abbey, its 3000lb bell still hanging in the belfry, only swayed by the currents of the regular tides across the estuary, over 100 years since it was rang by the order of carthusian monks who lived in the nearby priory. at the turn of the last century during a heavy storm the abbey was plundered by an unknown gang of marauders, as they left on horseback carrying with them all the gold from the abbey the sea defences around lonely sound were breached, flooding the abbey, priory and the surrounding land, the monks ran for dry land as they watched their beloved bell tower disappear beneath the rising waters, unable to chase the thieves, cut off as the water rose around them. some locals say these ransackers were in league with the elements, some say they had just intentionally damaged the sea defences before making their raid. local folk-law claims that the morning bells of the abbey can be heard ring out from beneath the murky waters of the sound every year on the anniversary of the great storm, ringing the peel that was never rung.
this record, and the full 2xlp that will follow it, are dedicated to and inspired by events in 2015 & 2016, which saw the spectre of global crisis come knocking at europes doorstep. during this time, more than a million migrants and refugees fled their homes in the middle east, northern africa, sub-saharan africa and other conflict ravaged areas in search of a better life. for many, hopes of a future for themselves and their families lay in continental europe. while the reasons for such displacement, on a scale unseen in almost a century, are many, so are the reasons for europe being seen as the ideal destination. the relative peace and calm of the continent and the prospect of building prosperous lives in western europe was enough to mobilize multitudes to embark on the treacherous journey to europe. one of the most well-trodden paths on this journey was the balkan route, a trail leading through turkey, greece, and the former yugoslavia. this route was not without its dangers, and the dreams of many were dashed by impassible security fences and discordant eu politics, as one by one they were turned away at borders, or worse, forcibly returned to their countries of origin.
europa is the first single that represents the seed of discontent, from which the 2xlp grew. it was recorded during long jam sessions in belgrade as the media spotlight started to dim. the city became the purgatorial destination for a large number of migrants, whose journeys had been cut short and this record reflects the atmosphere of disillusionment and uncertainty about the future, which descended on the serbian capital.
music must be free. freedom in music is often suppressed by lack of, or by obstacles for creativity, which stops forward progression. the development that fontan’s songs have gone through, reaching this ep is unexpected and surprising but still, the bodies and characters of the original songs are intact and recrafted with fingerspitzengefuhle. from the core of fontan’s psychedelic and dreamy music, the artists involved on this release have hit cuts and chips off like cro-magnon people creating specific tools. tools with the power to blow holes open in the listeners mind.
if ‘convenanza’, released in february, was a distillation of all andrew weatherall’s influences in one place then ‘consolamentum’ takes that instinct a step further. here he invites friends old and new to rework the tracks from convenanza in their own style.
the double vinyl release includes a download code.
endeavors, the 4th compilation from voltaire records, explores the vibes of boogie, disco, modern funk, and whatever the hell type of music is also on there that doesnt fit into those aforementioned genres. it s the music that a bunch of nasty psychotic animals would be jamming in a festering urban back alley, as shown on the compilation cover, illustrated by oakland- based artist, jessie california
the rattler proxy, a sonic duo from athens, greece, release their debut single featuring two original songs mcreadys blues and mr. sham - along with a remix of the latter by timothy j. fairplay, one half of the asphodells.
emotional especial looks back at the first 9 releases since it s inception to provide a selection or -eleccio- via a special dubbed out dj meets studio mix from label stalwart jamie paton. ever since the first white labels appeared at the end of summer 2013, emotional especial has been busy putting out music that are their own warped take on club music. mixing the influences of dub, electro, disco, proto-house, house and techno, a sound appeared without any preordained plan. to celebrate the end of the first series of releases come ees10cd - a dj meets studio compilation mix created by label artist, remixer and even in-house designer, jamie paton. freaturing tracks from every ep, including two unreleased remixes are the tight productions of richard sen, the wiggle of scott fraser, deep, chugging cage & aviary dubs, the eastern influences of baris k and newcomers khidja, the quirky discoid wonk of maurice & charles and finally not forgetting of course, the stand out timothy j fairplay touches. whether alongside mr weatherall, andy blake or in solo remix mode, young -junior-s skills (and name) grows and grows. all this is perfectly put together by jamie paton, the man who launched the label with his bizarre feeling ep. as well as the inclusion of several unreleased cuts, jamie has edited the -selection-, adding live studio dubbing, fx and the odd mega-mix to make it truly (e)special.
manchester artist belly is back with his second ep of 2014 released through his new inprint belly dance and this time he is joined by east end soul vocalist shona carmen & one half of asphodells tiimothy j fairplay on the remix. the second ep see s belly up the pace slightly from his inagural release moving slightly away of the slow beat of tracks like dark autumn and farewell and embark on a sligtly more up tempo , swing style bordering on the style of machine drum. the first track control is a hazy club track with strong vocals from both belly & shona backed up by drum and bass beats which is followed by vocal heavy space beats in the form of zu . on the flip side we see the real inpact of shona carmen with a clubtrack loaded with summer vibes called painting . the vocals are soulfull and beautiful with a swing tempo and drum patterns that lift throughout. this is followed by timothy j fairplay bringing in his own take on 90 s chicago garage music with a banging clubtrack remix of dark autumn off of belly dance 001.
emotional especial call time on their first series of releases and do so in style, taking a detour to san francisco for a 12- that features reworks of latter-day synth experimentalists inhalt. the specific focus here is occupations, last years ep for the killer dark entries label which showed a distinct progression in the inhalt sound to capture a contemporary take on synth wave/cold wave/dark wave (delete as appropriate
hailing from sunny los angeles, plastic love records kicks off our first release with an ep from label co-boss jimmy maheras. maheras made his debut in 2011 with his space jam ep on the crosstown rebels edit sub-label, rebellion. since then he s released remixes and singles on strainjjur, riff raff, supernature, and left d. maheras s two original tracks showcase his depth with the man from another place being squarely aimed at the big room dance floor and the second track, arecibo, bringing a little kraftwerkesque funk. we ve commissioned timothy j fairplay (crimes of the future) and cottam (aus music / ruff draft) for two very unique remixes. fairplay crunches down the original melody and throws it over the famed amen break to give tmfap a hands in air late night feel while cottam s remix brings the dreamy melody closer to acid with storming late night kick ready to knock down a wall.
emotional relish welcome in their second ep of 2013 with some solo work from scott fraser after a previous collaboration with headman and nitzer ebb vocalist douglas mccarthy. the light sleeper ep pairs two trademark fraser cuts with remixes from the aforementioned relish boss and fellow weatherall acolyte timothy j fairplay. a drab bassline wades *paraphase mine* into the murkier exclaves of synthy territory, allowing headman to lighten the mood by adding some tonal difference in his mix. fraser sets his arpeggios to flutter and bounce in *centreville lapse* with marching snares set to a severed heads styled reverb. fairplay does away with the tracks nosier components, demystifying frasers original for a warmer, eat petting remix.
after the tense and dramatic soundscapes of jason letkiewiczs nzambi lp under his soundtrack guise alan hurst, emotional response have put the tracks to the test for three appropriately oddball remixers. fellow l.i.e.s. affiliate terekke turns out a heavily sedated dub of >nzambi< that rides a pacey house beat but buries everything in delay and reverb. timothy j fairplay brings some serious sleazy 80s electro tones to >parallel sensations<, complete with predatory vocal and thick ladles of synthy goodness. finally, jonas reinhardt cools off the intensity with a blissful ambient version of >before the dawn< which plunges headfirst into a warm bed of melodic drones.
really exited about this one, ana helder from argentina (comene) delivered here an nice and freaky oldschool mid tempo track,so nice.the first remix is by astro labs home cat timothy j fairplay, something between carpenter and andrew weatherall.then on the b side ivan smagghes remix is just amazing with some old synth and techno atmosphere. last one is frank west, our second collaboration,he turns the song into a solid booty dub song.
french label astro lab recordings has been around for 6 years, releasing vinyls, and now introduces its first compilation on cd. as a turning point in its history, the label had to put together a special and exclusive selection, putting forward all its beloved inspirations and influences. this is how the treasure hunting compilation was crafted. the eighteen tracks on the record are mostly unreleased and composed by fellow artist friends, all part of the astro lab adventure since the beginning: andrew weatherall, kaos or timothy j fairplay - to name a few.
