ron maney also known as dj skull lived in the southside of chicago (il, usa). his musical career started during the summer of 1986, while recovering from a broken bone. during the following years he homed his craft, djing first at basement parties, building his reputation to go on to larger events such as, loft and hotel parties, and eventually the infamous music box and power plant clubs. at the age of fifteen ron shopped his first demo at trax records. there he first met chicago s legendary dj ron hardy, working as a&r for trax records. two years, and a new alias later (dj skull) later while at the power plant, chicago s own steve poindexter heard a dj playing one of rons tracks, and met ron. steve was now a&r at saber records and invited ron to release some tracks. so in october of 1991 dj skull s first record -n.r.g. music- was released. in 1993, he released the ep -the stomping grounds- on djax-up-beats, which was more noted than the first one. over the years that followed dj skull released lots of ep s on several labels. he has become well-respected producer and dj in the techno industry

idle hands affiliate brstl continues their exhibit of bristol born house and techno. following the success of samuels *numberuma* and with previous releases from shanti celeste, october & borai and outboxx, the next instalment: *eyes wide shut / voyeuristic distress* comes courtesy of good friend rhythmic theory. in keeping with the labels ethos, brstl007 relies on the astute manipulation of its limited elements and is two cuts of tough and direct techno.

argentinian dj and producer, ernesto ferreyra, provided cadenza with a rich and inspirational album back in 2010, the intricate and balanced el paraiso de las tortugas was a masterclass in minimal electronic dance. four years on, and ernesto returns to lucianos label with the insight single, and a precursor to another album for the label, slated for october release. voltage poem displays a huge progression for ernesto, a stomping, elastic backbeat, peppered with live percussion, shakers and micro glitches dances around the mechanical funk of the bassline.

the name sabota comes from the infamous area in nelson bc, where kids congregate late at night to smoke weed, hook up and watch the sun come up. both max ulis and robbie slade (of humans) both have (if somewhat indirect) roots in the area, making it a fitting concept for their collaboration. with the release of next time on discobelle, sabota immediately caught the attention of journalists and fans alike, and before any kind of formal release they have played sxsw, sled island in calgary, vancouver international jazz festival with nosaj thing, and symbiosis gathering. the two full-time music collaborators have been making ethereal goodness.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. the first release on project squared in a year, *make your mess* is a three track ep by melbournes craig mcwhinney. craig has been making music for years and releasing since the late 2000s on melbourne labels such as pinksilver, melbourne deepcast and his own haul music, also on labels based further afield such as brendon moellers steadfast and speedy js electric deluxe. craigs music is techno, but it isnt preoccupied with the 4/4, employing broken, swung and rolling drum patterns. his tracks often include melodic and harmonic elements and effects reminiscent of dub techno but without conforming to the pastiche template of the sub-genre. the make your mess ep is composed of the core title track and two additional tracks that arose as interpretations and variations on the initial production: *provocation is an excuse* is more furious and loud, *disengage* is more restrained. all three are around 125 bpm and were produced in the space of a month between september and october 2012.
