july sees radio slave’s rekids invite britain’s renowned swayzak to the roster with a cold war themed release entitled ‘odessa calling’ ep. a name associated with quality, swayzak’s ability to retain their signature sound whilst producing across various sub-genres has cemented them a solid reputation since their humble beginnings in the 90s. their impressive back catalogue includes six studio albums and appearances on labels like k7, m_nus, curle, ellum and swayzak’s own label 240 volts, which was relaunched in 2017. originally a duo comprised of david brown and james taylor, brown has been helming the project solo since 2012. he now joins respected berlin-based imprint rekids with two inspired productions. ‘odessa calling’ is a mysterious track with hypnotic synths, mesmerising pads and enigmatic vocals that combine together to create a celestial aesthetic. on the flipside, ‘numbers station’ continues with the otherworldly feel employing shimmering percussion that wanders alongside a brooding bassline for a well refined finish to the package.

in 2015, something magical happened. we met a couple of talented young swedes named artur bra&#776,ndstro&#776,m and egil kahlbom who excelled at composing and producing these lighthearted, breezy disco-hued house tracks (or house- hued disco tracks, perhaps) that both fit the aesthetic and character of lph and brought something new into the fold. the result of that first encounter was marathons, a full-length album, their debut to the world, and now, two years later, we re back for the much-anticipated follow-up. rehearsal is a little briefer than its predecessor—it s five tracks—and has a markedly different tone, one that s less about dusty, sun-bleached samples and more about tightly-engineered and delicately-crafted songs. if the first effort was marked by its carefree naivete&#769,, the sophomore effort is, well, something a bit more advanced or, perhaps, rehearsed. what hasn t changed, though, is these guys ability to home in on grooves and coax something trasncednetally hooky, memorable out of them. the five tracks contained here are low-key in attitude but powerful and punchy in approach. they re uniquely juicy, nourishing numbers for mellow hours and fearlessly fun ditties for party hours. lots of love went into the lot of them, and we hope all s you feel when you let them wash over you is that. love

das projekt wurde erstmals im februar 2016 im barbican aufgeführt und von boiler room und dem lco selbst kuratiert. die musik schafft synergien zwischen elektronischen und akustischen live-komponenten, nicht nur bei harmonien, sondern auch, wie traditionelle instrumente zu hybriden instrumenten verbunden wurden. als teil der entwicklung reicherten actress und das lco ein typisches klavier an und schufen damit sounds unter mithilfe von verschiedenen objekten, wie bspw. schüsseln oder plastiktüten. die ausverkaufte show selbst war ein großer erfolg und womöglich der startpunkt, der schlussendlich zu dieser mit spannung erwarteten veröffentlichung führte. für das album nahm das lco die einzelnen instrumentalparts im spitfire studio in l.a. auf, schickte sie dann rüber zu actress, der diese spuren nach seinen vorstellungen verfremdete, wodurch wirklich einzigartige neue stücke entstanden. außerdem haben lco, neben anderen tracks aus seinem werk, actress’ „hubble“ (aus seinem 2010er-album „splazsh“) und „n.e.w.“ (aus „r.i.p.“, 2012) neu interpretiert.die entstehung des projekts war sehr stark durch das mekka des brutalismus inspiriert, dem barbican centre in london, wo das projekt uraufgeführt wurde. iannis xenakis, ein griechischer komponist und architekt, der gebäude seinen kompositionen entsprechend schuf und vice versa, war eine starke inspirationsquelle. actress und lco haben, xenakis nicht ganz unähnlich, die grundrisse des barbican verwendet, um klänge zu produzieren, die direkt von den formen des gebäudes beeinflusst waren.

the safe trip organisation has been broadcasting their musical version of a traditional numbers station on the frequency 5079. human intelligence suggests the agent behind four regular, ear-pleasing transmissions is the safe trip associate artis. using a specially modified one-time pad, we were able to decipher these undercover operatives. the ethereal, dreamy, arpeggio-driven throb of panthera pardus, with its poignant tone and undulating lead lines, was clearly meant as a warning.. the same could be said of -cetacea-, where melancholic synthesizer sounds and meandering electronics gently wind their way around hybrid electronic/acoustic percussion. panic set in once we deciphered giganthopithecus, a composition littered with frequent increases in percussive intensity and a mind-altering melodic refrain. our hunch that artis was ordering immediate action by agents was confirmed by delphinae, whose colourful melodic fluidity, futurist new age construction and layered wooden drum hits deeply affected our researchers. we ordered our own agents to raid the station, but artis had long since scuttled off into the hazy morning sunshine.

san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon’s creation, whose debut lp “this is the beginning” acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, ‘back roads’ – with its glorious harmonies and the soaring ‘power’. more thoughtful numbers such as ‘until you were gone’ or ‘love’ will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

official re-issue of danish electronic music from 1974! vinyl lp comes with booklet and limited to 500 copies - no repress. frederiksberg records announces the first re-issue of stoned which is exclusively licensed from the artist and has been carefully restored from the original master tapes. it comes with a booklet of liner notes by thomas knak. stoned by gunner møller pedersen is a pioneering partly-electronic composition from denmark. gunner believes that its musically out of category. it was created for a slide show with focus on sculptures by the late american photographer stuart fox. gunner self-released the record in minuscule numbers in 1974. the music on stoned has an original and meditative quality which transcends time and should appeal to today’s music lovers with a taste for something different.

the ep is driven by two upfront drum & bass productions that highlight reso’s attention to detail and flair for music with an epic scope. ‘kodama’ is an eight-minute long excursion of relentless drums, tight edits, and roaring bass lines that jolts you to action. on the flip side ’tiberium’ plays with a bright, uplifting lead before plunging into a rolling break and warm bass offset by soft keys and female vocals. this is drum & bass as sweeping, cinematic compositions not just dancefloor music by the numbers. the ep also showcases other sides of reso’s sonic world with the instrumental break of ‘fluid mechanics’ resetting the mood and contrasting against the rush of ‘kodama’ with atmospheric tinges, floating keys, and soaring guitar riffs. the ep closes on another upfront note with ‘mantis’, which swaps the frenetic breaks and tempos of drum & bass for houseleaning 4/4 rhythms and speeds while remaining just as effective.

to explain the project briefly, this is the second ep called cd it has a remix track by alejandro vivanco on the c side, which then chic miniature have remixed on the d side. the project will continue like that on the next 12” where another artist will be remixing the chic miniature remix... and so it continues. the records won’t be catalogued by numbers, but by letters, as they are more of a series all together. in other words there is only one original track, which is the a side of the first ‘changing pieces’ 12- and the rest are remixes.

after some excellent digital releases on editorial and ism as well as a fantastic remix of kraak & smaak on jalapeno as one half of allovers we are very happy to release i gemin s debut vinyl ep on pressed for time entitled the let s move ep , it features two superb deep house numbers in the trademark i gemin style - chunky, hypnotic and soulful. we were big fans of both tracks here at pft hq so we got head honchos yse and goshawk on remix duties. yse reversions it s about trust in a tougher, trackier style with some mood ii swing-esque spoken word vocal on the flip goshawk gets his talons into let s move upping the tempo slightly and adding a bumping bassline whilst keeping the soulful vibe intact.

in 2016 grimez brought some of cincinnati’s best musicians in the studio to record raw analog recordings using vintage gear. guitarist brad myers currently has a phenomenal jazz cd out “prime numbers.” organ/keyboard prodigy, j-skillz, is a frequent session musician for hi-tek. tim hensley is the drummer for the cliftones, a reggae band that is touring and receiving well deserved national notoriety. the remaining musicians all have degrees in jazz and perform in many shows throughout cincinnati.

this release is one of round numbers. it’s metroline limited release number 50. you may have actually noticed that we almost got to release 90 by now but number 50 was always kept behind for a collaborative release between the two men behind the label: andrea and gianpiero aka octad and phiorio.
