a strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label brain records, part hyperdub. techno haze and synth wormholes with spectacular sound design that has banged at berghain and soundtracked winter night drives. greenspan is known mainly for his work with junior boys and jessy lanza and taraval is a longtime touring member of caribou, but both have released several 12” and eps of electronic exploration over the past few years. inspired by synthesizer minimalists like jd emmanuel, cluster and john carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. the idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of pearson sound or actress. the cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the hamilton ontario area where the album was recorded. each of the five tracks on the ep were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. the recording was done completely off the floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact.

one half of the junior boys, jeremy greenspan makes his second appearance on jiaolong with the aid of none other than legendary, algorithmic composer, laurie spiegel. those not familiar with her work, spiegel is best known for her use of interactive and algorithmic logic as part of the compositional process, spiegel worked with buchla and electronic music laboratories synthesizers and subsequently many early, often experimental and prototype-level music and image generation systems. in the mid 80s, her most widely used software was the music mouse. here, greenspan works her piece >drums< into a confident dj tool, rolling steadily with angular electronic effects over a solid, weighty pulse. >sirius shake< employs a classic kompakt-style schaffle beat, mapping a curious robotic waltz.

weiss blasts off via “brain fever”, where raw, mind-altering arpeggio bass, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords and alien electronics thrust our hero skywards. think of it as techno for funk-fuelled, italo-disco loving astronauts whose journey to the end of the universe is only just underway. this intergalactic funk blueprint is explored further on the deeper and more melodious “you want a cigarette”, where weiss’s vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant tb-303 lines, rush-inducing chords and clattering machine percussion. on “space ghetto (booty)”, our hero celebrates the discovery of previously unknown worlds in the only way he knows how. with kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs and funk-fuelled synth-bass to the fore, weiss offers his own unique take on electrofunk. pleasingly fuzzy and tightly wrapped in the syncopated drum machine handclaps of ghetto-house, it’s a typically far-sighted and attractive proposition.

new york meets brighton as both label and artist step out on wax for the first time. this is a new, exciting realm for homage, but they surely know they re onto a winner with the feel good disco edit tones of tech support. there are classics embedded into these fine jams, with -feel it- coming on particularly summery in its laid back disco funk stylings. -inside out- is slightly more looped up, but no less uplifting, while -clarity- heads into a more woozy, filtered groove that feels inspired by the likes of theo parrish s ugly edits. by way of contrast -sugar- is a much more electronic affair that kicks with purpose while simultaneously reaching for the stars.

as instructed, we met up with agent 23, who introduced us to the test subject– code name ben penn – who was ushered into the bunker for immediate testing. in order to observe his reactions, penn was injected with a modified dosage of 4-ho-met and locked inside with only and handful of electronic machines for company.
the subject immediately began acting strangely. it quickly became clear that 4-ho-met was increasing his capacity to produce music.
afterwards, penn was able to play us two audio interpretations of his experience. he was visibly shaken.

sometimes amongst all the music that we hear every day, something comes along so unique and brilliant that its captivates your mind and soul and refuses to let go. that was exactly what happened when we first heard dokta - the ex-studio engineer with the freshest take on electronic music we have heard for a long time. fusing a fully analog working method & live instrumentation with a breathtakingly unique arrangement style, dokta combines all his experience working with some of the best in the business and transcends it into one hypnotic stream of genre defying mastery. for his first ep on 20/20 we are fortunate enough to have remixes from fabric resident jay clarke, and a collaborative contribution from seth troxler and bas ibellini. it is a major milestone for 20/20 to finally have a seth troxler production on the label. he has been a great inspiration for us and hugely supportive of our output over the years. seth went into the studio with good friend bas and came out with a remix worthy of dokta s long abstract arrangements. we hope you enjoy, and with an album in the pipeline for later this year we promise there is a lot more to come

after a 20 year hiatus, seminal uk electronica / ambient techno imprint likemind records returns with lm05 holovr. holovr (jimmy billingham) has been building a steady fanbase over the last few years with amazing releases for firecracker recordings, opal tapes and his own indole label. his very personal brand of emotional electronica fits perfectly into the likemind stable, with two tracks of beautifully evolving ethereal pads and delicate 303 basslines, very reminiscent of early 90 s black dog or autechre. likemind aims to continue with its original ethos of only releasing the most heartfelt electronic music.

following 2016’s ‘for perfect beings’, s olbricht, makes a welcome return to lobster theremin with his ‘purpleblue’ ep, a four-track excursion that weaves in and out of machine driven techno and shimmering ambient gestures.
what at first seems like a departure from his trademark skewed and sludgy sound is quickly realised as a shifting and ever evolving journey through the outer limits of electronic music.

psycomat return with another super limited and experimental offering, this time from reason stendec. the a-side is an electronic dream take on an acapella version, subjecting reason stendec to extreme stretches, bends and vocoder abuse. the aa-side tries gamely to accommodate jono’s 9-minute kumo mix, a slab of unashamed banging techno that kicks like a buffalo and belches noxious acid fumes from arcane circuits that swell into an analogue meteor shower.

zeb wayne returns with a majestic and scintillating song titled ‘wulfman’, featuring a trio of top tier remixers including alva noto, calibre and radio slave. following the release of ‘float’ on rekids last year, ‘wulfman’ is a beautiful song that demonstrates how musically versed wayne is as a producer, blending a serene vocal by ziwi, with intricate sounds to create a truly beautiful song from start to finish. alva noto, who composed the film score for the revenant alongside ryuichi sakamoto, as well as being the co-founder of esteemed minimal imprint raster noton, is the first of three heavyweight remixers. the renowned german producer employs his signature elements of grit, static and glitch resulting in an inimitable melancholic cut. well respected for traversing numerous electronic music sub-genres, as evident in his recent album on craig richards’ the nothing special, calibre ups the energy in his remix using sultry synths, syncopated percussion and mesmerising effects. concluding the colossal package, rekids founder radio slave creates a club-ready reinterpretation of his own, complete with fine-tuned kicks, looped vocals and a heady bassline.

grandi successi is a project by angelo sindaco and maurizio carli moretti with guests like raime drummer valentina magaletti, soft moon matteo vallicelli, impro-avant combo starfuckers, jonathan clancy (singer of his clancyness) plus contemporary artist claudio corsello and writer-performer emidio clementi. angelo sindaco started producing electronic industrial music on tape in the mid 80 and dark techno during the nineties, releasing albums for acv, minus habens, eukatech and more. he has been the first techno dj in bologna (italy) at link club sharing decks with underground resistance, aphex twin, theo parrish and many others. maurizio carli moretti started djing in 1981 opening for killing joke and contorsions acts and then performing in clubs and art galleries mixing dark wave and electronic music.
