with its lush live string and horn section, can’t stop loving you when originally released in 1990 was an immediate favorite in the uk, and represented famed house producer marshall jefferson’s movement toward utilizing live instrumentation in his productions. the track was released right around the time the kiss fm london launched as a legal radio station, and richard was support talent at the radio station launch party in hyde park london that was headlined by fellow chicagoans ten city.
the track also represented one of the last releases on the relaunched sam records imprint, before michael weiss ceased releasing new titles on sam and started nervous records.

young cody currie makes his debut on classic with this sparkling star-strung 4-part 12 ep, ode to eddy. following covetable releases on razor-n-tape, pulse records and better listen, the budding london dj and producer demonstrates his deep and jazzy style in this release, expanding on his usual creative use of sampling by introducing his own vocals and live keys. the title track has echoes of fellow classic artist folamour, blissed-out synths and syncopated drum work creating an irresistible lilting beat. i dont feel has hints of acidity, never alone loops the vocal over a shuffling melodic groove and tale of tales (memoirs of a super freak) is the uplifting finisher. ode to eddy is a supremely promising introduction to an intuitive and gifted new artist.

the latest on lobster theremin white label comes from the canadian-based british up and comer dust-e-1. coming hot on the heels of his dust in the dance ep on collect-call records, dust-e-1 offers up more of his signature sun-drenched, percussive jungle workouts. on his latest offering the lost dustplates ep, dust-e-1 layers wistful dub motifs atop propulsive breakbeats and driving subs. fuzzed out, hard hitting drum and bass breaks are scattered throughout, fused perfectly onto hard steppin riffs and shifting rhythms evoking early 90s london days and deep-in-the-dance warehouse nights.

cadans continues an incredibly strong run of releases with curved, his first drop for ben sims on-point hardgroove imprint. previous output for clone basement series as well as darko essers wolfskuil and balans as well as a collaboration with randomer for tasha s neighbourhood imprint have quickly established cadans (dutchman-in-london, jeroen snik) rep. on curved we re treated to yet more of the rising star s strident and sometimes disorientating rhythms. creep and dank open the ep with blistering purpose - all distorted 909 kicks and and hazy memories of strobes on seething dance floors. the title track kicks off the b-side with an aptly undulating and enjoyably unsettling slant to its main riff while the ep wraps up with chant a brilliantly effective drum-machine and vocal/horn sample workout.

yasha is 28 year old joe gillick, who grew up immersed in the sounds of ukg & grime on the streets of south london. he founded orphan. in 2015 with his friends sage redman and billy meddleton. the three began throwing bi-monthly parties in deptford, their aim was to feature the unsung heroes, the seminal artists that weren’t often regulars in the crowded london club circuit. cutting his chops djing alongside the likes of tim goldsworthy (dfa, mo’ wax, unkle), dave okumu (the invisible, jessie ware), the golden filter (optimo), mica levi (micachu) and more, joe fed his keen sensibility for club grooves. cut to 2018 and joe finds himself a seattleite.

*** check b2: !!! *** bath-come-london party purveyors, origins, take to channelling some of their creativity into the creation of their own origins label. at the helm for the debut release is bristolian up-and-comer tommosini. having heard move d unleash the beauty of another dimension at freerotation last year, origins knew they had to find out who the mastermind behind this deep house gem was and the rest, they say, is history. another dimension transports you through the galaxies via a combination of dreamy pads, crisp percussion, full-bodied bass and those sensual deep tinged vocals. future classic in the making. the a2 i dont stop carries on the u.s flavoured deep house with a vocal house track that wouldn t be out of place coming from the shores of chicago masterfully intertwining a bumping bassline, soft organs and those introspective, luscious vocals. flip it over and you re treated to two interpretations of another dimension. first up fellow bristol bass badboy, hodge, serves up a signature remix, chopping the vocals and layering them behind a pounding kick and machine gun percussion to give that bass heavy flavour hes become so well known for. deadbeat steps up to close out the ep with a heavyweight techno rework of the original, complete with hypnotic bleeps, phased hats, and intermittent sub bass goodness, all tied together with a driving kick to give a real industrial feel to the remix.

ow finally on vinyl: artbat are bringing their first full ep release to diynamic music. the three-tracker -planeta- starts off with the title track -planeta-, a rapid-fire techno odyssey that might as well be taken from a relentless pursuit in a futuristic action movie. this is followed by the gloomy bassline of -prometheus-. heavy on percussive elements, the track is divided in half by a cascading synth-break only to return with more layers of percussions, strings and the hypnotic bassline. closing off the ep is -sand in your shoes- featuring london based artist dino lenny, who has previously worked with madonna or wu-tang clan and produced remixes for underworld, missy elliot or timbaland. the collab track is a dreamy deep-house tune and a perfectly emotive way to finish the record.

the man, the myth, the legend, back in the 80s jesse rae, along with roger troutman and bernie worrell, was part of the p-funk movement that was hugely influential to detroit’s early electronic experiments. lesser known is that the enigmatic scot-funk warrior later produced underground electronic tracks in the 90s. the inaugural release on glasgow label southside shufflers presents two of jesses shufflers on vinyl for the first time on the global 95 ep- a sampler from his pioneering 1995 album compression. ever the innovator, jesse recorded the album collaboratively using live isdn technology spanning three continents, with the resultant tracks fusing african, us electro-funk and old scots influences. 23 years later, jesse’s under the radar shufflers sound more relevant than ever. southside shufflers are a record label and sports collective based in glasgow with outposts in london and amsterdam. sss aint no half steppin!

maps is a project by a london-based lithuanian drummer and producer, marijus aleksa. this labour of love is the culmination of many hours spent touring and in-session with some of the greats of londons bubbling contemporary jazz scene, resulting in marijuss first solo project to date. the ep combines elements of jazz, afrobeat and electronic music through free-form jamming and remixing, with movement and the dance floor firmly in mind.
