trademark is the collaboration of tony reeves and tundra records labelmate loki. formed in 2000, the trademark project blends electronic studio craft with the live influence of their years playing jazz. trademarks output ranges from chillout through breakbeat to deep house and even drum and bass, but always with the fusion of deep jazzy chords, rolling beats and searing synths that define their style. this year sees the pair return to their roots with some deep, tech-house grooves for the discerning clubber.
ia stands for 4/4 beats and the label starts with a bang with three great and quite different 4/4 tracks for many deep and tech floors, and tropic of capricorn for more chilled moments. elevator is crisp deep/tech house which slowly builds and just rocks! with a wicked solid deep bassline too that keeps things really groovy. jack o diamonds also has that clean crisp sound and groovy bass with synth stabs and lots of funk for loads of different dancefloors. its a bit more upbeat than elevator and also has wicked deep bass to keep peeps movin! saturn 5 is deeper, darker, subtle and just a massive deep phat sound which is totally awesome on any decent system, wonderful deep textures and pads - just really lush. tropic of capricorn is a deep detroity broken beat track that compliments the others. crisp production again and not too cluttered, it does what it needs to and works in many different situations.

the new series for raw no-nonsens techno and house tracks. some straight up techno... some edgy, exciting and fresh, sometimes just plain functional dj tools. first one is mike dehnert with his solid umlaut track that was overlooked by many when it was released on his own fachwerk imprint. mike is one of the big talents with his own trademark sound.. something we don t hear to often! 3 unreleased verions of umlaut2... mikes first unreleased mix, slightly housier then the first one, the umlaut2 new version which is a straigth up club tool. big surprise here is the remix by levon vincent! a new talent from new york that got his name on the map after 3 incredible releases on his own novel sounds and deconstruct labels. he did a more then excellent job with his dirty and housier version. levon did lay down a crazy groove with an old fashioned hook line (very n.y. house) and mold it into a fierce techno track. fresh and completely different then most techno out there these days.

melting vocals, slinky cuts and gorgeous beats. after her succes with ôblack candyö, jenn continues with some more delicious tracks. her brand are the unmistakable vocals and the forwarding beat. with ôbeauö she creates a funky summer track that cheers you up for sure! ôms tipsyö just wants to dance before she writes a little ôfarewellö letter to her ôbeauö. what a summer!

chymera returns to nrk music, this time with a two track ep of slick and deep techno house. 2 below is a gorgeous techno track, starts off very delicate and just keeps building and building with some warming chords, swirling melody and driving drums, reaching a chaotically soulful peak, let this track wash all over you! the second cut, saphiron, ploughs a more housier route for chymera, with a very functional production of deep keys, groovy bass and tight percussion!! ltd backstock

sometimes a track is so hot it just has to come back around again. about ten years ago brett johnson and dave barker (stucco homes) wrote some unbelievably catching house tunes, one of them being temptation and lies. so it just seemed right to give this track yet another life. deadbeat and mike shannon dive deep into a stripped down techno groover, removing the constant use of the vocals and creating a rolling techno dub version. some seriously deep bass in the production that works the subs in all the right places. ernesto ferreyra and guillaume coutu dumont aka chic miniature give you a playful melodic version on the flip. full use of the original chord progressions, combined with the guys signature marimba/latin percussion leaving you with a lush, warm summer hit. then brett dives into the track again giving you the oohs and ahhs mix. a ten minutes work out with bjs patented groove focused on the vocal harmonies in the original. the result is a warped, spaced out, long player that is sure to twist a few heads. mental just about sums it up. of course we had to include the original masterpiece for those who didnt find it the first time round. a favorite of everyone involved on the remix project i think youll agree that the temptation and lies cynosure mixes do the original some justice.

computor rockers return after the worldwide hit that was computor interface (brk49) with another showcase of exactly how electro should be put together. all too often retro can mean dull and uninspired (or just lame plagiarism), but anyone who has been following ed dmxs career over the last several years will know that really isnt the way he plays the game. instead he understands the value of songs and melody... the beats are fresh, without a doubt, but it will usually be the tune or the lyrics that will hook you into a dmx production, the elements that turn just another electro track into something unique and valuable. and so it proves here, from the classic computor shock (which helpfully comes in vocal and instrumental versions for those who just cant do the voice thing) to the melodic and hooky electro-funk of how we used to rock and distributed processing. stunning as always!

stone cold classic funky disco floor filler thats stood the test of time. first time ever on 12inch!!! taken from the hard to find self titled lp by tommy stewart, bump & hustle music is the definitive disco funk party anthem. it was recorded in 1976 in atlanta, georgia, and since then the lp has found itself in the play boxes of soul, funk and jazz djs alike. however, its not until now that this amazing song has finally made it onto the preferred format of dance djs the world over û the 45rpm 12inch single. in 1976 tommy stewart was a busy man, working as an arranger, producer, performer and writer for a host of soul and rnb artists. the lp made for abraxas records was the first to go directly under his name, and although it failed to take off locally, the lp soon became known by djs across the world primarily for the club smash bump & hustle music. as it happens that song in particular almost didnt exist but for tommy needing to come up with something quick in order to fill in a gap in the album. conceived and recorded on the spur of the moment, and with backing vocals by isaac hayes singers hot buttered soul overdubbed later, its a superb example of rhythmic simplicity blended with soulful, catchy harmonies. its just impossible to listen to bump & hustle music without a broad smile coming to your face, and when played loud in a club, its impossible not to dance!

after excellent results with the first three releases, it is label manager dia who comes out with the next release on vinyl did it. roaches travel in groups is an ep complete with the right amount of house and techno elements, never leaning too close to one style yet retaining a familiarity and elements from each genre to make it appealing to just about any music lover. on the a side, left there kicks off the record with vintage-like house pads and piano. the second track on the a side, winds of tomorrow takes things into techno territory with classic 909 claps, prominent hi hats, and filtered synths, upbeat,fun, and more of a peak time track. on the b side, dia shows us a sound that she dominates and clearly has defined her previous eps, leaning towards the often called >afterhours techno<, with a strong, deep, hypnotic track, scrape. made up of small sounds and carefully placed percussive elements that carry the track nicely, all this topped by a contagious voice that seems to invite us into a parallel universe where the only thing that matters is the music. limited edition of 500 units!

daniel mehlhart is an aficionado. that would explain the cosy buzz emblazoning his >coming close<. the deep bass adept prepares some tasty meal here, just like an accomplished cook, pecking only the best ingredients for his versatile tracks. two soulflul clappers are the radiant result, featuring tenderly restored sequences and carefully tailored samplework. gabriel ananda shows off impeccable taste by firing up the robot beatbox for his remix, tuckpointing the sounds so well, that one might want to rub his ears due to so much rapture. three masterbuilders ftw

after a winter break and a with new focus on original and forward thinking house, boe is back for 2009 with one of the hottest detroit artists to break onto the scene in years. kris wadsworth is a man who truly has his own unique production style. for years the term minimal has been banded about for music with little soul, originality and that essence of dance music, a groove. kris is a guy whose interpretation of minimalistic music oozes all of these qualities and much, much more, stripped down, funked up house that takes the listener back to when house was raw, full of energy and brimming with soul. his production resembles that of an early herbert, crunching and twisting his way though drum samples and polished chords to create a sound that is simple and intoxicating yet difficult to copy. less, it seems, is most definitely more. dig is kris first four-track ep and showcases his sound through four slices of deep, groovy late night house. the first track the depths of is kris sound summed up in just under nine minutes. the first three minutes belong to a long intro that builds and builds through vox snippets, stab samples, synth chords and h-hats that ride the groove. the track breaks down only to kick back in with a chunky snare and trippy pads to whip the listener into a frenzy. macrotones is a wonky late night rhythm synth track that wouldnt sound out of place at fabric at 7am. on the flip, white bread kicks off where the depths of left off, a catchy rhythm with swinging stabs and moody chords. a growling, gut-moving baseline makes the track a real dance floor favourite. the final track on the ep is haunted house a deep houser with a delayed bassline perfect for those late-night moments.

this special release is dedicated to detroit dj legend ken collier. his untimely passing touched me personally as he was one of a small few who supported my music and me. because of ken collier, detroit developed a dance scene, which inspired artists & producers to make dance records, which gave birth to techno, which has provided careers for so many of you in the business today. so i dare ask all you techno producers, djs, record labels, record shops, clubs which play techno music and fans of techno to pay respect to ken collier just as you would our other fine music innovators. however, this special compilation isn t about techno, it s about h.o.u.s.e sound - broadcasting it to you from live inside the st-er-eo. this record contains no artist or track listing because i don t want this to be about who made the tracks, track titles, or even who wrote this commentary. this is my personal tribute to him, and how he has motivat ed me to make my contributions to house music. thank you ken collier, for helping me grow, not just as a dj or a record producer, but also as a person. every dj and dance artist here in detroit owes thanks to you for going out into the musical forest, chopping down trees and paving the way for us to build house.

rick wade - first darkness the third release on our new born vinyl only sublabel that twists us arround these days like nothing else in this world. after the tremendous sucess of of ricks debut on laid 01 intelligence which had been a great kick off for our new imprint we couldt help but wonder: where we all in fact just dating the same person over and over again? but anyways here is just another wonderful record of one of our all time favourite producers mr. rick wade. as you can sense from the title rick wade once more employs some of his darker signature synths lines in the main track that provide a glorious sparkle of sublime athmosphere

some notorious electronic music talents have started their careers as percussionists. and so did yaya, but his tale is different to all the rest. his new release for desolat takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining heartfelt benin influences - samples from dialogue and traditional ballads - with the stretched-out tension and release of balearic and the bubbling pops and stutters of tech house, plus the occasional kickback to a commodore64 high score melody. raised in turin, italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for yassin legali, also known as yaya, from an early age. his father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for mbamina, a band consisting of musicians from benin, zaire, italy and cameroon. mbamina released eight albums, collaborated with artists like manu dibango and salif keita, were sponsored by paco rabanne and played all over africa, including a show for the presidents of senegal and france. their final show was with james brown in paris in 1985 - the year yaya was born. well-versed in his fathers legacy, yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in turin clubs. just one year later, he was already djing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. manu dibango and fela kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by masters at work and dimitri from paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.

on their introductory minus ep, click box offers a refreshing return to a bygone era of classic instrumentals, full of experimentation and passion generated by that ongoing love affair between man and machine. berlin shades starts out in a jittery minimal fashion but soon dives much deeper as the tough electro bassline expands and contracts dragging the dancer to and fro. the cascading hook and in-your-face sci-fi synth motif add a sense of tongue-in-cheek drama to a dynamic arrangement that incorporates steep inclines, sharp drops and snaking pathways. as the short staccato bass riff gains momentum and the hook comes round for the second time you just know somethings lying in wait and the boys certainly dont disappoint. lost road is anything but a blind alley, kicking off with some low-slung interplay between a two-note bassline and a whiplash snare that dishes out a serious spanking. hi-hats fizz across the audio spectrum, cleverly pitching up and down before a drunken bass sequence ushers in the main section with its sliding, twisted synth distortions primed for surprise and immediate disorientation. once all the elements are in play, the fun really starts with so many objects of interest competing for attention. the arrangement is pulled and pushed to great effect extracting maximum effect from this tough little unit. more electro flavour to the fore as the loose, broken beat intro and robot sounds of some toys make for some slick moves on the dancefloor. the retro synth riffs and dark spiralling pads conjure up images of some early 80s lab full of computer kids in white coats twiddling knobs on huge mainframe monoliths. the bouncing bass and analogue belches make this a must for all retro-tastic electro-boogie fans. the theme continues over into voxer as rising filtered bass tones playout over another trademark click box drum pattern, this time doused in heavy reverb and delay. an array of analogue bleeps, screams and laser beams keep the motor ticking over.

igor from antwerp went a little crazy with one of his favorite pieces of music... but what igor did is not just another cover or re-intrepetation... he did make a highly expolsive track based on stravinsky s classic sacre du printemps. ok we agree.. that sounds kind of corny and pretentious... but somehow this bloke managed to get it all right. sounds like a forgotten techno classic from suburban knight who was recording with laurent garnier in his good old days and had henrick schwarz as studio engineer... a classic take on techno with a break that will revive more than one igor. this is a euphoric hands in the air, goose bumps al over record that works at the right moment.

next up from the very eclectic rong music is a remix ep from west indian girl.west indian girl is a rock band from los angeles. the bands name comes from a type of lsd that was popular in the early 60s. the initials are also a reference to james and tens previous band, wig scotty coats and wes the mes have fifty years of djing and remixing experience between them but their first release togetheruas wes coatsuis just coming out this month as the first california release on the newly merged dfa and rong music. patterns form hail from texas formed by sammy ragland & chris ornelas in 2000 making a cross between shoegaze trip hop & electronic moving to la in 2004 and forming a full band and have been playing live across the us ever since.

its been 5 yrs since the last record was released on tetrode music. (the deep theory ep). the wait is over and the duo of damon lamar and specter have returned. this ep is picking up right where they have left off. deeply rooted in the underwater sound that have made the releases on tetrode must haves by heads around the world. side a is produced by specter and he drops his signature beatdown sound. >bazerko< is a stripped down minimal heater that builds up with 707 drums, sub bass and a hammond organ riff that really bring this track together. >nighthawk< is a beautiful laid out sunrise track. smooth drums, warm pads, and bubbly appregiated synths. inspiration drawn from larry heard and the deep techno sound of the 90Æs. side b is produced by damon lamar. >large crowd< is this beating track pulled and resurrected from the vault. heavy percussion loop, dirty bass, deep chords and a haunting vocal that must be heard to understand the meaning. >put it on ice< is a laid back downtempo track that shows the versatility of damon lamar. lush strings, dubby bass and melodic keys make it a track that just grooves and soothes the ear. tetrode music has returned with this solid offering and one thing for sure is the sound hasnÆt changed ... just more refined.

miniminds have been making quite a noise over the last year with some sublime releases on fling recordings and picking up support from the likes of adam beyer, paco osuna, smith & selway, stephan bodzin and pig & dan, to name just a few! they continue to do great things with this excellent 2 tracker on hedgehog, a label previously releasing tracks from marco bailey and pig & dan. >overdose< is a dark driving monster, with huge funked out bassline, and builds with eerie synth lines. a sure fire peaktime smasher!

second installment by berlin based mri who successfully cultivated since 2002 some serious dance terrains. this release carries two outstanding and rare remixes as well as one original track. by taking techno deep into the mine shafts of dub, chain reactions / basic channel artist fluxion created an eerie, full-circle remix of the latter. you can hear that a man is at work who knows his gear well and is good in what he is doing. the production is brilliant, the selection of sounds superb, set-ups are constructed with caution, superimpositions are finely layered, propagations and ripenings are get going in a well-considered manner. dreadnaught bassline, steady hi-hats and lo-fi clips – a must for basic channel fans ! on the flip, young talented producer u.e.s. delivers the meanest blend of modern techno style and reduced shaped subs that just creams it on every system. and as well as both guys together does mri with original track rough. the „el castillo“ ep separates the styles over two sides and with „rough“ functioning as a wicked minimal techno track with shifted groove hinging on a grinding bassline - drives the track into abyssal techno territory. fans of basic channel and modern electronic music enthusiasts will be all over this beauty.

one of rough trades island 50th anniversary selection - 50 crucial titles, specially selected by us to highlight the unique contribution this seminal label has made to british music since 1959. the results of nick drakes solo sessions were as harrowing and stark as anything by robert johnson or charley patton. enclosed in an inner world of psychological distress, drake recorded pink moons dispatches from a private hell that was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. both the lyrics and the melodic motifs are pared to the bone here, their simplicity making them all the more immediately striking. the most nakedly emotional and disturbing moment is probably parasite, a visceral but mysterious account of a disconsolate soul roaming through the world in search of succor, with drake taking the starring role, ultimately offering, take a look, you may see me in the dirt. this was the end of the road for nick drake in more ways than one, but just the beginning for the scores of songwriters subsequently inspired by his bleak but beautiful visions.

killer new moby single!!! on pale horses my friend amelia is singing, shes holding a $20 microphone, no headphones, just singing it with me holding the lyrics in front of her pointing to the words. she didnt know the song before she sang it, so her performance has a vulnerable and almost na ve quality. after, i put her vocals on an old 1/8ö tape machine and re-recorded them back into the song. i wanted them to sound as if they were recorded 50 years ago... including remixes from gui boratto, apparat, and empyrean...
