new york native shawn o’sullivan returns to avian as 400ppm with debut lp, ‘fit for purpose’.
as an artist, o’sullivan has long since explored the juncture between hard-hitting, functional dance floor material and more lofty, conceptual work. from a purely structural standpoint, the artist’s return to avian bears all the hallmarks of previous output under the alias, utilising the same palette found on early ep’s for guy brewer’s label. stripped back and driven, the music marries caustic drum-machine polyrhythms with warping, pitch bent leads and characteristically atmospheric use of reverb. it’s a decidedly dance floor offering, but the music comes refracted through o’sullivan’s own lens, with plenty of elegant references to a career spent exploring much of the techno genre’s periphery, from noise to new wave. crushed vox bubble up from beneath wrought-iron percussion and the artist takes time to step away from high energy 4×4 workouts to explore more complex rhythmic structures and harsh, low tempo grooves.

finnish techno icon mono junk aka kim rapatti joins forces with berlin based freestyle man aka klas sasse lindblad, known for his productions on classic labels like sähkö and moodmusic. pata ep starts with the hard hitting techno title ‘not a love story’, haunting vocals, simple synthline, slicing percussion and deep bassdrum, all u need to make an effect, this must be heard in a big sound system. following with ‘need your lovin’ the ep takes a more electro approach, mesmerising love story with jupiter-8 bassline and 808 beats accompanied with vocals on this track too by mr rapatti. the ep ends with ‘stella polaris’, a production which started as a jam in 2007 in berlin at sasse’s blackhead studios and was finished 10 years later in 2017 in the same location. reminiscing of early 90s electronica time when everything was pure and gold and when these fellows also were starting their careers. ‘stella polaris’ leaves no one cold with emotional themes of analog synthesis and depth of the bass.

* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’, after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. “for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”, kolé explains, “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”, kolé explains. “they call me malumz, which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’, it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.” * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

it s 2017 and mindcut starts with a banger release from no one else than keepsakes. the new zealand-based producer - who already had his debut release on ansome s slam - opens the new year with a 4 tracker incl. ayarcana remix. a truly vibrant ep filled with hard industrial techno along some special chords.

producers such as akcept, alphadub, deadroom, baodub, dtr, blind prophet and bukkha have joined their talents, skills and energy on this special venture. in addition the whole release was fabulously illustrated by the inimitable fromthetrunk crew. those 3 covers have been hand painted for the past few months and turned out to be an outstanding piece of art when joined together. limited to 500 pcs, no reprint.

nach zwei gefeierten eps veröffentlicht jackson phillips a. k.a. day wave sein langerwartetes debütalbum the days we had. headcase aus dem jahr 2015 mit der durchbruch-single drag überzeugte sofort mit dem träumerischen surfpop, der nachfolger »hard to read« legte noch eine schippe drauf. inspiriert von den gesangsharmonien der beach boys auf der einen und den songstrukturen von joy division und den frühen new order auf der anderen seite, nahm der sänger und multiinstrumentalist die ersten skizzen ganz analog an gitarre, bass und schlagzeug auf.
jetzt folgt also die erste lange platte von phillips musikalischem soloprojekt. obwohl phillips sich selbst als seinen größten kritiker betitelt, hat er das album nur mit unterstützung des toningenieurs mark ranken fast im alleingang eingespielt und produziert. so entstanden elf wunderschöne songs mit gitarrenbasierter melodieführung und voller elektronischer tiefe und wärme. live wächst dieses soloprojekt zu einer band. zusammen mit seinen musikern erzeugt der kalifornier mit seiner weichen und gleichzeitig sehr eingängigen stimme und seinem lässigen charme eine zauberhafte stimmung. die melancholisch-melodiösen songs zünden sofort, wenn phillips und seine jungs auf der bühne stehen.
