the house band of bunny ‘striker’ lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of jamaica’s most prominent and musically expressive session players. the shifting core line-up spun off from the soul syndicate and thus typically featured earl ‘chinna’ smith and tony chin on guitar and bernard ‘touter’ harvey on organ. carlton ‘santa’ was the main drummer, but carlton barrett of the wailers band and ‘benbow’ creary were sometimes featured. most crucially, on bass, aston ‘family man’ barrett shifted to fully fullwood (and occasionally, earl ‘bagga’ walker), until robbie shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. the band was responsible for the popular ‘flying cymbal’ style that took jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975, its excellent cuts of cornell campbell and johnnie clarke material mixed at king tubby’s studio - a must for all serious fans of dub.

back in 1955 an unidentified flying object was spotted by a couple of farm workers nearby llangollen s castel dinas bran (crow castle). a young man named dewi llandlenip had taken some astonishing photographs of what appears to be a ufo hovering above the ancient medieval site. he was sure, this was the presence of the time travellers. crow castle has always had a mysterious presence, but this took them by surprise, a kind of close encouter type iii. shortly after this bizarre moment they were all left stunned and knocked to the ground, the object had gone without trace and their memory obscured into a so called abduction reset.

the second remix ep from maps of hyperspace’s “superspace” cd sees the ambient dynamics of “a sense of unity” emphasised in the versions rendered by off land and arjen schat. elwood throws in his reinterpretation with a superb minimal deep techno take. adriano wraps the excursion with a smooth dancefloor remodel of mikael’s unreleased “sky”.

the 2nd release from i walked by night comes firing out of the southside of glasgow. a young man by the name of the burrell connection has been flying under the radar for a few years now... a perth native / glasgow immigrant has been making music since he was 15, his first release came via west end communications (003) in 2015. since then he has released most recently with craigie knowes on the amazing 2nd annual war child fundraiser along with legowelt, shanti celeste, neville watson and many more. southside was made with a juno 6, yamaha dx21, roland tr8, korg minilogue and twisting samples and recording most tracks in one take with little post editing. this ep oozes raw energy and shows off a delicate deft touch. after debuting at the warehouse project in 2016, the burrell connection will be producing his first live show in 2017.

ltd repress !! this special one off collaboration sees young gun native berliner prodigy max graef, coupled with globe trotter fantastic man aka mic newman. with mic living in max s broom cupboard for a few vodka soaked weeks in berlin this autumn, there was a beautiful inevitability that some music would outcome. the lead track -soothe me- is no noodly shrinking violet, but a grade 10-cross-genre-dance-floor-destroyer which andy snapped up for label on first listen. clearly taking it s inspiration from the rhodes and sample drenched sound signature detroit label and adding in live instrumentation, tape effects, for a track rich in steely dan sensibility, coupled with a sub bass and twisted lead line dragging us into a new year. the b-side relaxin at the flip is a raw slab of analogue goodness, flying 606 high hats, a tough kick drum and simple elements driving the track forwards, best heard 8am in a dark corner of a club.

ruff stuff returns to their own label and are proud to announce a new 4 track ep. untitled04 is the result of different experiments on the sound and introduces a novelty for the label: the first official remix by the lovely italian duo black loops. “never ending” opens the a side with its raw groove, a hypnotic pad warming everything up and a vocal that will drive the listeners to unexplored territories. “m.a.m.t.” showcases the most familiar sound of ruff stuff: warm techno stabs on a straight groove filled with a single vocal and a synthetic arpeggio in the second part. on the b side the sound changes its shape with “flying”: a mixture of rough grooves, disco samples, female vocals and a touch of acid. the remix by black loops brings the track back to very house territories chopping the original samples more and filling them with a solid beat and shining hats. just put the needle on, push play and dance! vinyl only, limited copies.

with releases from lerosa, andy mac and piezo already under our belts, idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area, sometimes known as m50, has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for, while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn, strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias, his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single, both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty, dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for, locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated, emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering, heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system, even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

“fly with me” glides effortlessly through west coast aor in a unique hybrid japanese-hawaii fashion, uplifting the listener with inspiring sound and lyrics. “time machine” is high-energy cosmic disco jam that lends itself to japanese enka, yet maintains its playability through simple yet strong songwriting. whenever we listen, it’s as if aiko has invited us to join her as she soars through the after-life, flying “higher and higher as a bird”, traversing a space “where anything is possible”.

fresh from the success of their ‘past / present / future’ release, we march on, with berlin-based italian christopher ledger the man responsible for their label’s 41st release. the ‘percezione and retrospettiva’ ep sees ledger in flying form, as he props up with two dexterous, thoughtfully executed records that speak volume of his ability to craft atmospheric sounds. opening up the release is the sounds of ‘retrospettiva 2’, a future leaning techno jam that again wonderfully fits the brouqade aesthetic. clearly indebted to sci-fi spheres, this one is very much cut from a detroit cloth, with a steely finesse that lurks from the get go. a track that brings the listener on an endless journey, it comes some deep harmonic vibes. all things told, this is an ep of various contrasting sounds, ledger’s debut for brouqade is a stunning example of what can happen when producers think outside the box. the b side consists of ‘percezione attiva’. harmonic, blissful tones abound throughout, made all the more meaningful by a slew of gentle, melancholic piano chords that really pull on the heartstrings. a light and hazy experimental piece, the track forces parallels with other masters of suspense. culminating with a more traditional 4/4 vibe, this unusual turn only enhances the producer’s standing as a man willing to take risks.

a concept album is the best way to get back to being agan. -amplification of movements- (2017) is the first full-length album of giuseppe carlini, already a member of plaster with gianclaudio h. moniri (kaeba). a work inspired by and dedicated to the natural reserve of vico lake, in italy. during a four-year period, from 2012 to 2016, the artist focused on the wildlife of the area in the province of viterbo, considering it both as an inspiring muse and an object of study. -amplification of movements- was developed little by little, in the wake of an -onion- architecture and layered in six songs which inevitably reference the nature of the site. the parallels between the place and the music are also to be found in search of a sound, which is balanced between field recordings and self production.

multi talented uk jazz pianist greg foat has teamed up with mercury award nominated the bees member and multi instrumentalist warren hampshire to collaborate on a new lp drawing on their diverse musical influences. classic british library music, 60s italian soundtracks & lost americana combined with touches of modern classical, minimalism, jazz and folk. featuring many members of greg and warren s previous bands and one of the u.ks finest jazz drummers, clark tracy, the lp also features an edinburgh orchestra and soloists hand picked and scored by the boys. recorded all analogue onto 2-multitrack in edinburgh, mixed down by mattias glava at his studio in gothenburg, sweden then mastered and cut in helsinki, finland, it s truly a european affair flying in the face of the brexit nightmare. release june 2017

german producer christian burkhardt teams up with fellow countrymen chris wood & meat for a three-track release on jamie jones hottrax this may. burkhardt has been flying the flag for minimalist electronic music for a decade now, releasing on labels such as cocoon, oslo and pressure traxx. likewise, freebase records founders meat + chris wood have been purveying deep and minimal cuts individually since the ‘00s, joining forces in 2009 before releasing on labels like desolat, housewax and tiefschwarz souvenir. between the three of them theyve continually garnered support from the upper echelons of house and techno, making regular appearances in the sets of names like ricardo villalobos, sven väth, seth troxler and jamie jones. intricate percussion and a compelling bassline make up the foundation of closer 2 u as an echoing vocal and tense strings operate throughout. meanwhile, plain is a more downtempo cut in comparison with its dusky atmospherics and distorted spoken word samples that subtly permeate throughout the mix. on the flip, trumpad is deep and dubby whilst integrating trippy synths and mesmerizing effects for a rhythmic conclusion.

after multiple cassette and 12” releases through kastil’s stale in 2016, it’s time for irazu’s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. “shtamm” is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. “refused to be found” is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through “shtamm”. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. “last hours” is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of “shtamm”. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. “torso” is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcode s commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. 2016 saw releases from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika, sam paganini, joseph capriati and waff, as well as a much coveted moby remix package. the label pushes forwards again in 2017, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community. after appearing on a-sides volume 4 at the start of 2016, ilario alicante now makes his full debut on the label. he has quickly established himself as a key player amongst a new crop of techno artists and truly is one of the brightest stars in the game. his skills behind the decks have seen him tour the globe with cocoon, as well as appear at the likes of elrow, lovefest and we are fstvl. opening with times , the ep gets off to a flying start as the track rages straight into top gear, rolling through 6 minutes of pure power. this is a peak time tool that is set to be heard across dance floors worldwide this year. ‘awakened you may have heard from adam beyer s sets of late, a firm favourite which gets his much sought after seal of approval. rampant syths and mesmerizing vocal hooks all make it one hell of a journey. sense is a more industrial affair, chunky basslines take your hand through the track as it charges on. it s that classic deep ilario alicante sound we all know and love. the ep finishes off on apogeo , with its hypnotic siren tones and acute percussion. one thing is for sure, ilario alicante is in a league of his own.

the album a little comedy, a little drama by dusty baron is the result of collaboration of moldavian fellows eugen kara, ivan slivka and dima scripnic. this collaboration has been lasting in the course of 2016, with miscellaneous recordings at home studios, including moldavian radio and television studio. inspired by french and italian psychedelic electronic music of 60s and 70s, cartoons and the comedian genre of absurd, the trio tried to incarnate their vision of the space into a lp comprising 13 tracks. vintage synthesiser lines and classic drum machines create a hugely entertaining blend intoxicated with universal love. now and then you trace the combinations of techno rhythms rushing into the futuristic vertical, and sometimes the sound transforms into a blend of absolute and exotically influenced reverie.
