miles whittaker has been an integral part of the modern love label since its inception in 2002 - as one half of both pendle coven and demdike stare, as well as his own productions under the mlz and millie monikers. after almost 15 years writing music, this is the first release miles is putting out under his own name and marks a turning point of sorts in his production style, or rather, in its sequencing. the facets ep brings together different ends of his production style, unifying elements of the house and techno he s most commonly released as mlz together with the more broken production signatures usually reserved for millie and the darkened tribalism of demdike stare. flawed opens the set with a linn loop from the archives, stretched and slowed down with an intoxicated aesthetic that s somewhere between house and dub, before lustre re-configures source material originally keyed in by labelmate andy stott with a nice line in squashed percussion. primer on the flip extends from a demdike stare outtake and veers off into an analogue drum machine workout, before on the fly ends the set with a recording made straight to mixing desk from an array of mis-wired and malfunctioning drum boxes, contact microphones and samplers, over at his studio the mill earlier this year.

in denmark, there rages a lively and experimental techno scene - and its not only a recent phenomenon. the best proof are phono and kemi, two danish imports to the berlin record label, highgrade records. the two chaps complement each other in a musically virtuoso fashion: phono, jacob thiessen, spent his childhood playing around with sequencers and drum machines: over the years he has stuck to this passion and as such, has developed a reputation as an experienced house and techno producer. kim kemi, by contrast, has been a dj since the beginning, and since the 90s has been one of the key figures in the copenhagen club scene. together they have not only performed regularly at the biggest events in denmarks capital, but have also ensured through their many releases, ever changing accents and atmospheres on the turntables. this wealth of combined musical experience can be heard instantly on their latest outing for highgrade – >decompose<. the three tracks, >decompose<, >exterminators< & >last night< assemble rhythms that come from punk, elegant voices and dizzying loops a multi-layered sound excursion. the result is a perfectly produced ep, but one that has not been ironed smooth. with the >made in denmark< seal of quality, phono and kemi bring some extra depth to the party attitude

and are a duo living in manchester, uk. they have released a split 12 inch with 16 bit on mindset in 2009, the second 12 inch on black sun records that came out recently and a couple of 12 inches on horizontal ground. they sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. i selected three of those tracks to appear on this ep, ranging between 130 and 135 bpm. self defence returns in full effect with new yorks one and only dj dukes (of sex trax / power music fame) >summer madness ep<. dj duke had retired from the music front for a while, after he had about 300 records emerged after his >blow your whistle< blew up in 1993 and during the past few years. with releases dating back to 1990, you know the mans got skills aplenty, and they once again get a killer workout on this ep. each of the tracks shows a different side of his music-making and rewards ones time and attention, demonstrating that duke plays in his own league of house music. a bit of curry flavour seeps into >summer blast< by way of a sinuous string melody, adding an exotic tinge to the breeziness that otherwise infuses the cut. a funky, vibes-like motif and analog synth streams bring additional colour to the scene while a crisp, pumping groove locks everything solidly in place

the 40 thieves turn up in lengs back garden for a bit of late night skulduggery. kicking off side-a with >backward love<, a deep wobble of dub guitars, weird out fx, large 80s synth lines and lovely throbbing bass, more than enough to get people freaky. on side-b, >crystal mountain thunder< has a genius intro of ambient electronic atmosphere, which gives way to another slug of late-night dub wonkiness, with massive guitars and a hefty drumkit. as expected, a meaty joint of late night disco, for the murkier end of the dance-floor. we hear an album is coming up and if it matches the quality of this release then weve got a veritable treat on its way. check!

returning to the plus 8 fold once more, paco osuna is one of spains finest electronic exports. having made a name for himself with a residency at amnesia over a decade ago, he hass since gone on to play places like watergate, fabric and movement festival, all the while holding down a residency for barcelonas club4 night at city hall. his experience in the studio goes way back, too, with releases on drumcode and minus as well as mindshake - the techno imprint he founded in 2005. the osuna sound has never strayed too far from the pulsing heart of the dancefloor - despite investigating everything from dark and fierce to stripped and raw techno - and thats the case once again on his four ep …

summer, sun and ping! for 8 weeks, it has not rained, a constant 30 degrees day and night and again this track. in this year s summer ping! (leutral rec.) offers a small soft organs house number. la bella bella is the name of the track and promises not only a beautiful woman with an elegant swing of the hips on the dance floor. jamy wing (sonido / einmaleins / finebeatz) shakes the appropriate remix-cocktail with sun-ripened fruits from percussions and matching reduction.

cool, dark underground club monsters. being a top player in the music industry is not an easy task! but with 15years in the business and over 150 releases, 50+ remixes & 300+ compilation appearances the numbers of jeffs output speak for them self’s. jeff started creating music in 1994 and got hooked on it directly, but it took until 1998 before his first single was to come out on his own label maskros music. since that single he has released on labels like poker flat, night drive music, episode, treibstoff, kickin music, konvex konkav, plastic city, global underground, regular etc.

the -makeovers- project is a compilation of some of claudes best re-twists, some of which are so far removed they can almost be considered original works. this special edition vinyl includes one of the most sought after remixes, -warpaint- originally by pocket 808 in australia, vonstroke turned this into a late night anthem in 2007. played by techno djs, dubstep djs, and everyone in between this track was never cut to vinyl until now. on the flip side claude remixed the nublu orchestra out of new york. he was never completely happy with the original version of the remix and hes gone back and re-made it into a very special piece of music including a new vocal sample from his wife aundy who also did the vocal effects in whos afraid of detroit? this collection was put together with the theme that a remix can be an inspiring starting point for an entirely new piece of music. these are two of the deeper and darker remixes but we think you agree they are also very special.
