after releasing brand new material on dum034, dum records are dipping into the label boss’s production archives for the next one: it is a reissue that features tracks from a number of classic mono junk releases. two came on trope records, one in 1995 and one in 1993, and the last pair of cuts come from 1996 when they were released on plug research. arguably some of the influential finnish producer’s finest work, all of the tracks here emphasize how long he is operating on the top of his game already.

maeve is the record label run by three close friends, mano le tough, the drifter and baikal. for maeve’s eighth outing it has enlisted the talents of long time friend ed davenport. the record grew from a chance hearing of some new material at eds studio one night and after a brief discussion it was decided that the tracks would find a fitting home at maeve. although recently more known for his harder techno releases under the moniker inland, silver walks is some what a return to eds roots. slower, emotive, more contemplative tracks, recorded over a pretty short period of focused studio time. silver walks is a synth-led jam. the arpeggiator holds pride of place as the centre of the tune with filter tweaks complementing its progression. kuromaku has a tougher attitude - heady and cosmic with a deep kick. it means black curtain in japanese.

the first spinning plates ep back in february was picked up by print media and radio tastemakers from ra and dj mag to b.traits and moxie, whilst djs as diverse as ivan smagghe and francois k slotted it into their dj bags. as such there has been much demand for a second release, and now it arrives in the form of a fascinating split ep from scene veteran andy rantzen and relative newcomer bruno schmidt, who helps a&r for the label. in fact it was bruno who came across andy’s tracks during a late night youtube session. andy, who remixed inxs and severed heads back in the day and is a sydney based producer who has been active for three decades, had upped a load of his old demos to youtube in the faint hope that one day someone might find them. and damn are we happy he did, because they are brilliant affairs that sound like little else. for his part, bruno has been a louche resident and hifi creator alongside andrew james gustav and gwenan and delivers an exceptional stripped down late night trip/early morning trip.

while being a rare patrick adams and billy nichols production, mary clark’s “take me i’m yours” has in recent years become one of the most celebrated disco tracks by contemporary deejays. this borderline gospel-disco gem has all the elements of a timeless disco cut, a driving bass line, powefully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by mary clark. like many of peter brown’s “affliate” labels, little is known about them or the artists recorded. originaly released in 1980 on ‘la shawn’, it is rumored to have been no more than 200 records originally pressed, making this one of the most sought 12 inches among collectors.
