too many possibilities can also mean a tyranny of the what if.... in this light, celebrating less becomes vital. and thats exactly what swedish producer and studio barnhus affiliate simon haydo does in redux. all of the sounds in the albums nine tracks come from just one synth: the korg ms20. as simon puts it, the idea was to maximize the use of less, basically. less gear, less effects, less input from other people , less everything.using only between 2 and 6 channels for every track, the result is a stripped but surprisingly rich sound, that delineates spatial techno vignettes coated with the unmistakable charac- ter of the ms20 filters. even more interestingly, this restraint is not only applied gear-wise, but also from an emotional point of view. instead of involving my own feelings, i let the voice of the ms20 take care of it, says simon. all this makes redux an expression of techno in its purest form. after all, its a kind of music that has always gravitated around simplicity, austerity and, of course, the believe that the machines have their own soul.

new label funky fungi preps its debut release for this march, featuring two original tracks from label boss georg stuby and his production trio the gravy underground. hailing from zurich switzerland, georg stuby is a longstanding house and techno dj, producer and teacher. his new creation, funky fungi is a vinyl based record label working as an outlet for georg and his friends to release their music. aside from the solo release, this ep also features the gravy underground, a collaborative project with georg’s friends christopher lawrenz & jonas, who already remixed one of georg’s tracks on his last formresonance ep. the opening track ‘metro bass’ has a dusty analog feel and delves into the depths with shuffling percussion and reverberated effects which spiral out of control, all saturated in white noise giving off the spatial aesthetic associated with an echo chamber. next up, the gravy underground production trio create a mystical journey in ‘keep it gravy’, as minimal kicks chug alongside off kilter hats and twisted vocal snippets that are delicately layered with field recordings.

consistently unearthing a hotbed of new talent, hot creations next release is back to the music from dj and producer sooney. the release features two original tracks and a stellar remix from one of the biggest names in dance music, route 94. title track back to the music is an exhilarating record shaped through melodic synths and keys alongside a sharp bassline. route 94 strips back his remix to the bare groove. while the chugging beats of afraid of the dark bring the release to an accomplished close. london based sooney fell in love with house, hardcore & jungle in the early 90 s. in 2015 he set up his own label, take control records, gaining support from the likes of shadow child, jamie jones and gorgon city to name a few. since being discovered by the hot creations family, sooney’s sights are firmly set on big things for 2017. fellow uk artist route 94 shot into the limelight in 2012 with chart success and has since gone on to appear on labels including virgin, defected and crosstown rebels, and work with major names like katy b and jess glynne.

public releases hits the lab for some aural alchemy and to turn out its first release of 2017. a four-tracker from moscow’s phil gerus, scenes—or, in the producer’s native russian, &#1089,&#1094,&#1077,&#1085,&#1099,—manages to have a makeup that’s both peculiar and magnetic. the title’s a fitting one, every track feels like a vignette in a collection of short stories. separately, they’re self-contained, but a rich narrative arch is added when they’re sewn together. if there is a theme here, it’s of viewing the future through the dusty lens of the past, and each of the songs explores this in its own fashion. the kick-off, “ohashi sky garden,” starts as a hyped-up italo space epic, pumped full of swirling synth licks and sharp, tight drums, but it mutates into something completely its own when vocal samples (90s r&b?) and warm keys (prog rock rhodes?) enter. after the original’s brisk five minutes, the legendary richard sen—graffiti guy, breaks guy, house guy, disco guy, half-of-padded-cell guy—steps in to give it a trance-y tinge while doubling its runtime and adding a dancefloor-destroying hi-nrg coloration. the b begins with “naha swim,” a crunchy funk foot-stomper that might as well be an unreleased idjut boys or ray mang ditty dug up from the noid catacombs. fiery and furious, yet utterly cheeky. serving as a sort of coda to “naha” is “kiss of a kind,” a gerus take on 80s adult contemporary, replete with sleazy sax and sensual pads. a gentle nightcap to a zigzagging, antic 12-inch

steinzeit concludes the mrt grey series. the duo is comprised of hansruedi schnuriger, one half of echo 106, and bjorn magnusson. they recorded these three tracks in a weekend s time inside magnusson studio, which is an abandoned factory in the middle of nowhere, in switzerland, using bare concrete walls as an echo chamber. the pace is slow, atmosphere is bleak, tone is melancholic, drums are evil. it reflects how switzerland feels in winter. lonely, and this is true, like the name of the tracks.

tiga is back to tell you what youve always needed to hear with his new single eye luv u. co-produced by one half of paranoid london, the new single harnesses all the pure source energy of what enlightened club-goers often describe as their favourite emotion. the title came to me while i was playing a pyramid that had been converted into a multi-purpose event space, says the canadian dj/producer. the hieroglyphics over what is now the coat check made me imagine a world in which pictures could mean words and words could mean anything. the thing about wordplay is that its fascinating to conceive of different realities informed by different systems of meaning, and how each reality would invariably bend to vault me to the pinnacle of all possible worlds. its humbling, really.

bqd040.1 is a collection of remixes the label released during its early years. back then, the label intended to back up every release with a remix. the rhadoo remix was not just an amazing addition to pherox’s “gabrielle” track, but it was also featured on an ep released with new graphics. buck delivered an amazing interpretation of danilo schneider’s summer track “l’ecole”, that’s still very much a favourite at the label. last but not least, laurine frost’s remix of dana & nvelope’s “flowers”, one of dana’s first released tracks. frost gave the original a rich soundscape an extraordinary vibe. all of these remixes meant something special to the label, and now they’re all here for you to enjoy on one record…

review ornate music continues in its mission to reach out to the freshest talent in the house and techno scene by shining a light on emergent german talent faune, following last years stellar releases by ka one & st-sene and homepark. thus far, jakob panthels production as faune has been spotted on the soundscape versions label, while under his own name he has produced two albums released digitally on crystalline days. most recently, he delivered the four-track isvatten ep to tuesday slump, which operates out of his native munich. as well as his rising release schedule, he has been appearing frequently on the circuit in munich and berlin, performing alongside the likes of a made up sound, stefan jòs and skudge. on this ep panthel delivers three tracks of deep, hardware-powered techno with a keen dancefloor instinct, fitting right in to the ethos of ornate and marking another step forward for faune.

embodying a pure devotion to syncopation and dub, and carrying the torch for innovation, collaboration, and bass here in portland, gulls kicks off our new dj music label common language. we sought a record that could bravely blend techno, funk, dub, cumbia, and sound collage into one set of moves. only gulls could fulfill this mission, with bass as the glue in the collage. -eastwood bounce- and -system pools (shock version)- hold down the dub continuum, where -in these times- and -up clean sound- offer syncopated, globally minded un-techno, again run through the gulls dub blender. an endlessly chewy, layered sound is his signature, each track a showcase for contrast between glassy or globular timbres. as one of his few official gulls releases outside of his own label, we are proud to bring this definitive and complete set of tunes in a -something for everyone- 4-song ep format.

newcomer cody currie looks to better listen records to host his sophomore ep after lighting things up with his debut on pusic late in 2016. the effort is stacked with deep disco stylings similar to that of sample + synth maestros brame & hamo and fouk. its an exquisitely layered effort from the london kid, one which will please the intellect and dancefloor demand equally.

here is the debut release from the first lady of the balearic sound nancy noise. her influence on the ibizan sound cannot be understated and, for those who know, nancys place in eivissas musical heritage is carved into es vedra. if you re not aware, it s to be expected nancy isnt one for creating a fuss about what she does or where she fits in. for nancy, its always been about the music. about the vibe. about being moved and taken to a place and time through sound.

sublunar is the new label founded by sciahri and dagdrom. the label sound focuses on deep and hypnotic textural techno and will represent the owners specific taste for both club effective techno as well as more experimental excursions.
their first output is a three 12” ep’s trilogy called “devotion” by one of the two owners sciahri, the florence based dj and producer who has just released his second ep on ilian tape. each release is each release is limited and numbered. as sciahri somehow tries to create worlds and environments, the first chapter of this trilogy “devotion - part 1” represents the start of the journey, entering a dimension that is abstract yet solid and physical, full of vividly distinguishable details. the air is dense but there’s room to breathe and to let one’s body and mind engage with the narrative that develops over the course of the three tracks.

halocyan outlines computer musics many future possibilities, while remaining actively mindful of its one and only history. having released material from such luminaries as dosem, paul woodford, oliver ho, extrawelt, and joey beltram - halocyan continues to assert its influence with their next record: a 2-part ep from apollo and r&s affiliate dave angel. founder of rotation records and originally hailing from chelsea, angel is a techno emissary whose intelligent, funk-licked productions have propelled him through a long and illustrious career through which he has consistently branded his own stamp on electronic music whilst also remaining highly relevant to modern listeners. it’s this that lends him perfectly to a record with halocyan who do what they do best in presenting his incoming ep: a sincerely-rooted collection that comes backed up by label favourite hackman on remix duties. portrait kicks things off with jubilant melodies rippling atop sharp, whetted percussion before minor-key sweeps bleed in and bring with them a degree of pensive tension. a buoyant bass line propels the track from dave angel incoming ep beneath before hackman offers up a deftly swung revision rich with his sturdy subs and idiosyncratic percussive flutters.

jamie paton, one half of the duo cage and aviary has in interviews expressed his thoughts about if slouchy techno can be viewed as an own genre. the answer lies in this 7” - “telefuture / blind summit” - released on hoga nord rekords, on which the label above is highly appropriate to sum up the sound. the tracks contain elements from your techno favorites dating three decades back, but the tempo and the production creates a slouchy (in the words most positive sense) feeling clearly influenced by the slow motion house of cage and aviary.

lynn williams may not be someone you have heard of but her pedigree is strong. her father was hank ballard (of king and james brown fame) and her mother was 60s miami radio personality and dance group leader vanilla miss boom boom williams. lynn cut 5 excellent 7inches for various henry stone owned miami labels in the 70s here we present her two most collectable. the first it takes two is a smokey deepfunk killer. on the flip dont be surprised is one of miamis best ever deep soul records period, a dark serious ballad pulled off with amazing emotion considering her young years at the time of recording.

with a solid collection of productions and remixes to his name, arturos music has helped define the unique and emerging silicon valley sound. this approach blends the driving, beat-laden beauty of techno with the soulful, deep melodies of house.

repress 2017 , allez! as the curtains come down on another crazy summer of love, apollonia drop their latest release courtesy of io mulen - the ukranian rude boy who appeared on the label at the beginning of the year with ‘unknown to the unknown’. he’s back with a hefty six-track package which is sure to please his fans, and win him a whole new army of supporters. we get straight to business with the first track, ‘rdm37’, one of those trusty apollonia bouncing bombs. skittish beats work off a sublime groove, while io keeps the background full of interesting sounds, boings, cheeps and all manner of whimsical effects, introducing more and more as the track progresses. by the midpoint you’re so gripped by the track that your whole body is moving uncontrollably, super glued to the rhythm. next up, it’s ‘xdt54’ coming through with a deep, persuasive bassline that jigs around in the low end luring you into its web. simple, polished percussive elements keep things moving at a pace while subtle keys and barely-there vocals add further layers to this catchy little number. the third track in on this lengthy ep is ‘mpc13’, a walk on the sensual side. vocal snippets are interspersed among sultry pads, skipping four to the floor beats and a sleazy b-line to create a delectable slice of dance floor naughtiness. this one flirts with you as it writhes around, taking you ever deeper…four tracks in we have ‘zgb41’, another alluring cut that has all the hallmarks of a deep house classic. those shimmering pads, a bassline that feels like it was born in nineties chicago, diamond-cut beats and a general feeling of what we would call ‘true house music’. there’s soul, there’s funk and there’s realness, what more can you ask for?ypt58’ keeps us locked in to that hypnotic groove with an insistent b-line holding things down - together with the infectious rhythm cultivated by the drum arrangement, it’s a killer combo. put those together with the smooth atmospherics plus synth lines staggering in and out of the background and you’ve got yourself a roller. last but definitely not least is ‘zxy22’, a wistful slice of technoid funk which has a delicate melody at its foundation. as it develops we get sucked in to layer upon layer of beauty, from the analogue low end to the electric guitar riff – each layer complementing the other and creating a symphony of sounds that acts as a perfect way to close out the ep and will no doubt end plenty of dj sets, when it’s released. so monsieur io (mulen) returns to apollonia with an instant classic, make sure you snap it up right away. magnifique!

the last couple of years have been huge for pomo, going from a relatively obscure canadian producer to releasing his debut ep on hw&w, remixing for the likes of janet jackson and mark ronson, producing am i wrong? on anderson paak s debt album and touring the globe with disclosure as their opening act. bastard jazz has commissioned pomo to be next in line for the fourth volume of their tempo dreams compilation series, following on the heels of the hotly contested soul clap compiled vol. 3. as with other tempo dreams records, pomo has curated a slick and well polished album full of exclusive tracks from friends and collaborators such as lindsay lowend, aloka, exmag, syre, daniel crawford, fvlcrvm and more. touching on the shimmering nudisco sound, plodding deep electronic vibes, funky instrumental hip-hop, and even a hint of drum n bass, tempo dreams vol. 4 takes it s rightful place in the series as one of the most forward thinking compilations showcasing emerging young talent.

schaltkreis wassermann is one of the pioneering electronic groups of the early eighties. their album psychotron of 1982 has become a much sought after cult object. now in flagranti have remixed released and unreleased material by schaltkreis wassermann from the early 80ies.

1994 - chicago producer rick lenoir has already released a slew of legendary records under many well known aliases and his house jam label has been in business since 87. the sanctuary project is the nom de plume utilised by rick for this particular killer disco infected 4 track ep from that period. the keen eared among you will no doubt recognise some of the sample sources used throughout these tracks, lenoir flips jazzy loops, chopped up vocals and lays it all out over some kicking drum programming, this is that style of sample based house that has the hardened dance heads and hip-hoppers unified, gritty, raw and brimming over with soul! the cuts featured on this ep will sit nicely with most contemporary sounds and shows how on the money rick was in the mid 90 s! the record has long been out of print and has been forever popular with the diggers out there, commanding a healthy price when available in the second hand stores and online. this reissue has been realised with the full involvement of rick lenoir / house jam records, chicago and is 100% legit! don t snooze, this one deserves a spot in any self respecting house heads record bag or dj set, classic material made available again for 2017 - running it’!

in the last two years, paul régimbeau had put his most personal and earliest musical project mondkopf in stand-by mode. the rich arrangement work that defined his sound wasn’t fitting his desire of simplistic intensity anymore. his different collaborations (autrenoir, violent magic orchestra with vampilla & pete swanson, foudre!, oiseaux-tempêtes) forced him to explore new aspects of playing electronic music like a regular band member. the young producer was experimenting being a musician and embracing the experience. but after a year without composing, things changed on the tragic night of november 13th.
on this very night, the parisian set up machines he had acquired in the last few months and started improvising what became the first song on his new album: “they fall, but you don’t”. since that moment, paul regularly spent nights experimenting and recording what he felt at the time. while previous records reflected months of fine-tuning, these songs represent the mood of one evening, one night, the ones when you surrender yourself to the melancholy of the moment. much like a diary, the album is a compilation of these moments that escape reality in a chaotic and dark year.
