dj tennis welcomes joseph ashworth on his high recommented life and death label

catz n dogz are some of our oldest extended dirtybird family, spanning multiple eps, a couple albums, some remixes, and we even presented their very first release as catz n dogz as they transitioned from their old 3 channels alias in 2007. its been over 4 years since they ve been on the label, and we re ecstatic to have them back with the feelings factory. fine feelings features the legendary vocalist robert owens, and sounds like a classic deep house track from the late 90 s when no one called it deep house, they just danced to it all night in warehouses. factory settings includes additional production from londons joseph ashworth, and from the first note to the last its filled with driving intensity and an ascending cacophony of rhythms and voices.

get weird does love a tune that conjures up the feeling of or suits being played out in the desert. “falling” does just that. it was built to be played outdoors with it s spacious vibe and tight groove.
joseph’s a perfectionist and refined the production sound many times before finally giving us the pleasure of releasing it.
“dominika” is lighter. pretty and fun. it brings a smile to our faces every time.

with the highly anticipated release of thorsteinssøns ‘academy of heroes album on the horizon, pets recordings have decided the flip the switch early and precede the longplayer with a fantastic trio of remixes. academy of heroes is described as deliciously cosmic and cheerily schizophrenic and looking to break down and reconstruct some of this glorious frenzy are three exciting producers, each of which have chosen a track from the album to remix.

ashworth concentrates on the essence of solid techno in his first full ep for made of concrete. inspired by the main component of concrete itself, the material is intitled ‘portland’ and consists of no less than four original tracks. “world” makes for a gentle introduction by opening with a soft melodic lead, swiftly changing the tempo after a few measures. we’re quickly immersed in a syncopated bassline peppered with whirring synths that harmonise with full scale piano cuts, the most intriguing earworm on the entire cut. on “launch” the producer lays down hard hitting techno drums from the get-go, setting the foundation for a tense atmosphere. ashworth’s signature move quickly ensues, as he manages to inject emotion through synths and piano pads into an otherwise tense and anxiety-ridden ambiance. toning down the graveness of the previous tracks’ mood, ”mineral” reveals a surrendering groove, with a stripped down, minimalist approach, where the melody is assembled with the help of industrial elements, emotive bleeps and electric glitches. ashworth’s experimental edge is evident in the final track “scatter” - the sub bass lead creates a morose atmosphere paired with low-key synths and mechanical loops. while the first two tracks showcase ashworth’s ability to instill life into solemn techno soundscapes, the second half of the ep successfully exhibits his edgy experimental side, adding up to a heterogenous release.

grain remixes !! ashworth s grain lp captured the imagination of many in the music world on its release last year. after releasing two original ep s from the album we get an excellent remix package from three leading lights in electronic music. what better way to wrap up his debut with needwant. the ep serves up three very different remixes all for a different occasion and mood. the ever reliable dorisbourg, who remains one half of the lauded genius of time, takes a laidback electronica approach but with techno at it s heart. newcomer kris davis and yost keep the original feel of cork but provide a sensual but progressive vibe. while simon haydo drives all the way to the end with his remix of fireworks. great production on show across the ep for the emerging producer ashworth.

the inaugural release, slag heap comes as a collaborative 12” between london-based producer and live act aggborough and rising talent ashworth. together, the pair present an enticing and focused vision of mystic techno. borrowing depth and energy from the purest of sources to create immersive techno soundscapes, “slag heap” is a truly magnetic listen that never loses its collective coherence.

joe ashworth has marked himself out as one to watch over the past year with a string of underground cuts on waze & odysseys street tracks label, notably his collaboration with citizen, situation. he brings his textured, melodic sound to anjunadeep for the first time with debut release rebound / whatever weather. on rebound he showcases a nuanced approach, deftly blending strong techno influences with a delicate ear for melody. the twinkling, sometimes discordant keys that rise and fall throughout demonstrate an enviable maturity in joes productions. whatever weather is one for the dancefloor, revolving around an infectious bassline groove that rolls beneath crisp drums and more gorgeous flowing piano

londoners kiwi and ashworth return to sneaky for a follow-up to dawn ep, the warm, dusty and at times experimental release, championed by the likes of daniel avery, eric duncan and tiefschwarz. the past few months have been busy for both halves of the duo, with kiwi signing to duke dumont s blase boys club and remixing for house music super-labels bpitch control and get physical, whilst ashworth has signed music to tomoki tamura s holic trax and needwant. second ep takes a new format, with two original tracks alaska and na am on the a-side, backed up by a nicholas & marcoradi remix of cux3 and ranacat s remix of zubr. alaska could be described as an amalgamation of the inspirations that lead to the first sneaky release, combining the pumping house beats of cux3, the comforting wurlitzer of zubr and the ethereal movie-soundtrack dusk. na am is something totally different, existing mainly as a collage of recorded and found sounds, avoiding the usual structure of house music in favour of something reminiscent of the weirder side of the chemical brothers. strange though the track may be, the climax would undoubtedly move a room full of pilled up ravers to a state of frenzy. the b-side remixes both hint to dance floors of the 90s, with nicholas and marcoradi making you wait and wait before dropping an unforgettable piano hook, whilst sneaky s ranacat lifts zubr out of context and into peak time territory.

sneaky music maintain the pressure that the labels debut release from silk 86 built up, welcoming london pairing ashworth & kiwi into the fold with the dawn ep. south london based kiwis music combines influences from disco, funk and house and has notable released on needwant and deepshit, whilst east londoner ashworth debuted on balsaal, garnering support dixon, dj t and josh wink and recently teamed up with citizen for waze & odysseys label w&o street trax.
