aesthete obfuscation (computer club) computer club presents aesthete (aka thom barnett) with his debut release obfuscation. a 4 track ep of bass-heavy minimalism. micro-precise percussion bursting through minimal electronics with chattering industrial machines, the 4 tracks take an experimental approach directly to the dance floor. we first encountered the unique aesthete sound in a dark former ballroom in sheffield in early 2016 and were mesmerised by his sonic assault. as the name suggests, barnett s skill isn t confined to audio. a talented designer, he runs mamnick, an internationally renowned brand sold online and via outlets including a flagship store in tokyo. mamnick clothes and items blend sheffield craftsmanship with a love of cycling and a sharp aesthetic eye. everything barnett turns his attention to is expertly crafted and this debut ep on computer club is no exception.

to wrap up 2016, true romance unleashes one more disco stunner. this time the fabulous three tracks 12 comes from the classically trained yet funky to the bone: phil gerus. the russian producer has been a rising force of the modern disco movement with releases on futureboogie, sonar kollektiv, thugboat edits to name a few. the make time ep, his first offering on true romance, confirms gerus is here to stay. the a side, she is wearing her black boots again, is meant to played very loud and very late in a dark smoke-filled room. its a raw thumper with a thick post-disco bass line, robotic italo synth, dreamy chopped up vocals all layered with catchy mysterious chords. the flipside starts with the irresistible make time, a groovy number with loopy funk guitars, soulful vocals and infectious keys that will stick to you like glue. for the grande finale, gerus serves us detective from kamakura: a gritty electronic funk track with banging percussions and delirious moans that will keep you awake until the break of dawn.

nested structure is the first great circles release from artists outside of philadelphia. thrive are tetsuya yoshida and hitoshi kojima. they both grew up in the north kanto area of japan. they first met at the club run by tetsuya yoshida called sound a base nest, which is known as having the best sound system in the north kanto area. in 2007, the duo started their dj / producing unit thrive. previous releases have included a split 12inch with keia yano for japanese label struct, and recent solo releases by hitoshi for always human tapes and for his own label ambivalent deviation. this record almost didnt happen! — tetsuya and hitoshi were picking up great circles records in japan and, having periodically communicated with each other about music, they sent us the struct 12inch to check out. while cleaning out the back of the car a few months later, the presumably empty record mailer was about to land in the recycle bin when we fortunately discovered a demo cd of unreleased thrive material inside. we drove around listening to it and week later we agreed to release a 12inch. the music on the nested structure 12inch is dark, foreboding, even outwardly threatening. its hypnotic, textural and rhythmically complex.

the kurl project started in the summer of 2014 where the primary concept was to sonically encompass the various influences of a twenty-year musical journey. the essence of kurls sound is mainly deep dub with hints of house groove that create a very unique sound environment connecting the listener to his lifestyle and movement. at the root of “sacred fire” is a very special love story. kurl started an emotional partnership, a genuine brotherhood with mj white, one of the pioneers of the soulful house music sound of the new york ’90s. marshall james white appeared on many hits in the nyc club scene including scandalous still irresistible just to name one. he tragically passed away in november 2015. mj white gives soul to sacred fire by writing the lyrics and interpreting it with so much passion that kurl was able to transform this track into an eternal love song. for kurl, mj white will remain the angel with a heavenly voice, and above all, a memory that will mark his internal and musical journey for the rest of his days in the words of mj white music has a huge heart that beats inside all of us.

the colors are stunning. in a single view, i see looking out at the edge of the earth, all the colors of the prism. red at the horizon, blends to orange and yellow, followed by a thin white line, then light blue, gradually turning to dark blue, then black as the vastness of space engulfs the surroundings. as i looked upon our home rock, i saw many natural features. i witnessed a large river meandering slowly along for miles, passing from one country to another without stopping or hesitation. i also saw huge forests, extending along & across several borders as if these divides didnt exist. i watched the extent of one ocean touch the shores of separate continents, then suddenly, a profound thought came over me as i looked down on all this. the birds dont fly this high

zarkoff (sasa rajkovic) is croatian musician and sound engineer that has been busy making proper sound of dozens labels and doing his own music last ten years. genre could be described as dark electronics, somewhere between techno and synth wave, but if there is something that makes him unique, it s his powerfull and distinctive voice. sasa is also member of ebm-ish project sumerian fleet, having releases on mighty dark entries or creme organization, where we took the opportunity and asked his colleague, legendary mr. pauli to enrich this 12inch with proper west coast style remix.

newcomer label substrato features dorian gray on its third release. gray, aka moreno mariotti, is an italian-based artist whose music culls from a broad range of influences that rest somewhere between surrealism and sci-fi. this third installation is a canvas of obscure atmospheres and hypnagogic patterns, the textures of which play to the label’s orientation towards the acoustics that embody subterranean and submerged worlds.

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.
