what do you do when a live project exceeds its own ambitions? just keep doing the wonderful concerts and eventually head to the studio. sounds simple and conclusive. in the case of karocel, that was exactly how they went about it and surprisingly, all six band members made it happen. though the four marbert rocels, mathias kaden and michael-mitchi-nagler have known each other from their hometown along the gera-jena-erfurt corridor, and the karocel live shows have been well received: an album is an entirely different beast.

after sides from matthew burton, seuil and albert schwartz, sammy dees ultrastretch label returns in 2013 with volkan akin. a regular presence at berlin institutions like club der visionäre, akin has been slowly rolling out his brand of prickly, spaced-out club tracks since the end of the last decade, both under his own name and as v for volkan. but if volkan akin has up until now been unfamiliar beyond germany, his ultrastretch debut, voltage, featuring an absolute beast of a ricardo villalobos remix, stands to turn more than a few heads in his direction. densely packed and intricately constructed, voltage is an extended groove you can get lost in. cymbals ring softly amidst whirrs of faintly melodic clicks, scratches and voices. but at the center of akins churning, percussive arrangement lies a warm and weighty kick sure to keep dancers pinned to the floor. like so many great perlon records, voltage can be taken as a deeply considered exercise in sound design or as a deadly club track simultaneously, with akins musical sophistication and knack for an inviting beat working hand-in-hand. the original mix spends over 11 minutes unraveling, but as you fall further into the swirl of akins interlocking rhythms, youre likely to stop counting. a shorter constant voltage mix evokes sunrise, pulling back the originals heft to reveal gorgeous pads and hints of organic rhythm. ricardo villalobos, sammys longtime label mate at perlon and a producer who likely needs no introduction, digs deeper into the thump at the heart of voltage on his acdc remix. focusing on the originals wisps of melody, villalobos turns in a warm, zoned-in remix that feels of a piece with the singular techno trips found on his recent lp dependent and happy

jay bliss is our first ever romanian signing. there has been a influx of superb romanian producers over the last years including a:rpia:r and the trend continues with bliss and his hermanndstadt collective. developing a style sitting somewhere between house and techno, with strong detroit roots he has released for the likes of immigrant, hudd trax and diynamic. pluto has been a staple of ralph lawsons sets for a while now, its a smooth and crisp tech house roller that recalls classic 2020 releases gone by, especially those of carl finlows. on the flip weve turned to skudge to give us their own take on pluto. weve been fans of skudge since they dropped their first single, and have had us transfixed with their excursions into pure analogue, loopy, dub techno ever since. their version of pluto is a different beast to the original, all stuttering percussion and menacing strings, a perfect counterbalance to the original version

so what is after the void ... we bang the bomb of course with a lady in a thong surrounded by snakes and hand grenades, obvious really! having been away for some time it appears that a light sounds dark spring is in the air. en route to their next destination (rumoured to be a dark subterranean world full of nasty mutants danger electrified tracks out this summer) with arms out the window and the mothership roof down, its full steam ahead and proper european dance music time. not really train spotting as before although a couple are a bit off piste like maltas very own ian dury by the name of iain richardson rapping about sitting on a green bus! much more like it however are classic italo covers of big in japan, gloria, a wonderful new wave version of falcos euro smash der kommissar and the thoughts massive german hit wait a long time sounding like some long lost talk talk record. light sounds dark do some minor tweaking (going for that natural look) to big beast anthems axodrys you and colme 111s you take me high (early euro take on chicago) and for lovers of something a bit more funky theres some groovy goings on from kraut funksters epsilon urging people to leave the city which might not be a bad idea if the water runs out.

quakers is a hip-hop collective boasting 35 members which orbits around a core of three producers: fuzzface (geoff barrow), 7-stu-7 and katalyst.

straight japanese killer techno !!! tight, mechanical and brutal with an underlying funk, snow monkeys is the sort of multi-faceted beast that kobayashi is known for. the rough edges are allowerd full space to create tension but the track is tempered with some brilliant, shimmering and evocative melodies that slide into the mix for just the right amount of time before subsiding into the churning groove. one of the new school of japanese techno producer, a.mochi delivers a well pitched, moody version on the flip. pacey yet measured in its progression its a version that takes the originals tension to new levels and wont be a surprise for anyone who has heard his productions / remixes for the likes of figure, cocoon and a-wave. hideo kobayashi is one of the few producers who can skip from deep or vocal house though to searing techno with ease and snow monkeys is a perfect example of what he can do when it comes ot the tougher sounds

another entry into the lonesome hero roster, ed shepherd.having hoarded an arsenal of hardware goodies,shepherd employs his passion for all things analog into a beast of a 3-track ep.remedy grabs 90s acid house by the shirt collar and shoves it into the modern vinyl scene with a heady lfo drone that just wont quit.changing direction,britta epitomizes the fleshed-out inner romanticism shepherd continually uncovers throughout his ever-evolving studio process.and then beaker,an homage to technos sequenced-and-squelchy dan bell era. another quality release on this nice little underground label.

an incredible u.s.a.-belgium collaboration between the dirtiest mc juan huevos and phranteek. all started when phranteek was sound engineering a juan live act. he just says >man? i guess you ll like to records some miami bass tracks?<. juan was like >of course!<. at the end of is tour, kick the lyrics on some phranteeks 808 beat. and the magic happened! phranteek says that mr. huevos is a studio beast… and we can feel it.
on b-side, daveluxes dubstep remix is incredibbly fat. we never thought releasing dubstep music, but this is not dubstep… this is deep schizophrene robot sounds highly doped on bootybass music!
winner of octaves de la musique award in 2011, dj elephant power remix sounds like a travel in a futuristic india. while listening to it, you can imagine some elephants in disguise dancing on ghettomusic!

dubbed the godfather of french electro by i-d magazine and considered to be royalty of the french electronic music scene, joakims diverse and trendsetting musical tastes have earned him a pretty damn big global rep. on the labyrinth ep you can catch joakims darker dj friend extended mix, a lush analog slow burner from canadian duo and domino records regulars the junior boys, an even slower - borderline chopped and screwed - melodic mix from uk producer lone and a dirty arpeggiated beast from deadstock 33s and stopmakingme. future classic have been working with joakim in australia for some time now - touring him down under, partying and hosting shows together, trying to get him to go surfing with us and even getting him to put some club touches on future classic alumni mitzi. what a record!
