We here at Thema are proud to be staring down five years of history — all the while with our sights locked in, waiting patiently for the right moment to launch this very special project—and we feel now is the time to unleash this beast. Its main purpose is to release pure sonic explorations, straight up techno for a new era and will be a vinyl-only affair aimed at all you true DJs out in the trenches, who appreciate the real thing. So for this momentous occasion, we have invited a field-tested Thema solider, Terrence Dixon, or as he shall be known here: Population One, one of his rarely used alias.

Yes, we know Terrence can and has drawn from the whole spectrum of electronic music, as he displayed in his well received “Parkhurst EP” for Thema last year. But for this project the focus is on pure adulterated techno. So it is with great pride that we announce Population One with “The Return”, a rare chance to witness a visionary make history once again. A new chapter has begun: Chronicle. As much as we know TD and THEMA, fans out there would like to see The Parkhurst Part 2, this is a Population One joint and Terrence makes that clear from the start. He’s left the sideways deep house leanings of the previous release behind in favor of the kind of supremely futuristic techno that his master’s touch is uniquely known for, hence our reasoning to invite him to lead the way for Chronicles maiden voyage. “Transition” is pure P1 from the get-go; it’s more ambient than pounding, with layers of humming, bleeping alien satellite communications over a buried kick. This is Detroit at its darkest and most extraterrestrial, and he puts his head further down into the rhythm to run the “Relay” on the second track. The lone, sparkling pad in the background plays off of layers of mutated drums driving deep into outer space at a breathless pace, as the gentle contours of the passing stars and nebulae are mirrored in the sonic progression.
