release number eight on london house maven george fitzgeralds manmakemusic label, the laszlo dancehall ep, connects two of the uks most exciting young producers: leon vynehall and christian piers. the sample driven crunch of vynehalls earlier productions on manmakemusic can be heard loud and clear complementing the canny but irresistible percussive and vocal shimmies of piers. aside track gave up, championed by george fitzgerald on his recent bbc essential mix for radio one, sets the pace and aims straight at the dancefloor with its strange sonic palette, at once euphoric and gritty. on the flip we get aint no time on which vynehall and piers give us their interpretation of classic house. the final track, manley harrison, is the strangest and arguably most original of the bunch and leaves the listener in no doubt as to why there is such a buzz about these two producers at the moment.

manmakemusic continue their adventure into the musical hinterland beyond bass, techno, house and garage with two cuts from new signing, trikk. hailing from porto, portugal, and a recent addition to londons kaleidoscopic music scene, trikk effortlessly marries old school charm with new school edge. a-side, ‘jointly’, takes robert hood-esque jackin’ techno drums and unites them with twisted garage vocal chops and relentless bass. on the flip, ‘i fall down’ takes things down a gear with an emotive mix of cavernous synth lines, heartbroken vocals and skipping drums which harks back to the finest moments of broken beat.

man make musics second release is a collaboration between two talented londoners, jack dixon and rick grant. having already made waves with individual releases on labels such as brownswood, hypercolour and take, these two good friends now offer up a pair of brilliantly off-kilter house tracks. >running man< is a heady mix of skipping percussion and caressing juno synth-lines, whilst, on the flip, >muted< takes a more understated, melancholic turn, counterbalancing the ecstatic nature of the a-side. jack and ricks contributions are also offset by kevin mcphees weird and wonderful slow-mo interpretation of >running man<. the remix blends vocals drenched in reverb with creeping piano riffs and shows yet another musical side of a man garnering plaudits from all corners for his unique style.

manmakemusic first made their name running a series of eponymous parties in londons east end which showcased the best of lowend heavy electronic music. given that the collective contained within their ranks a number of budding producers, the step over to label territory was always on the cards. george fitzgerald, who heads up the label, was behind the crews first mysterious release earlier this year, a refix of groove theorys >tell me< that sold-out within a matter of days. manmakemusic are now back for more, beginning the label series in earnest with some original material from george that sums up what these guys have been about from the beginning: real-deal dance music that tracks the borderlines of house, garage and techno. georges releases on hotflush and aus this year have consolidated his reputation as one of a small set of producers from london whose tracks translate in to dancefloor capital outside of british borders. this record travels deeper in to the territory of housedubstep cross-pollination than georges previous excursions. a-side >fernweh< is an intricate work of ecstatic synths tempered with a rock solid groove that betrays georges uk sensibilities. on the flip, >hearts< ramps up the energy levels with tough percussion and the trademark fitzgerald vocal wizardry.
