optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin’s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven’t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective “bwp experiments” to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to “personal space invader” in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. “message in a box” and “rising star” were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public’s ears. if i had to describe sebastian’s output, i’d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call “space opera techno”. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds – and that’s what makes his work so unique!

left ear are re-introducing another ten lost tracks from nicholas georgieff and virgil work, st louis basement electronics duo workdub. the release spans material from 1989-95 and includes recordings from their sole lp and both cassette albums. workdubs music hardly fits into a vacuum and some might even say it’s otherworldly. tracks like reach for the stars and lunar module reflect dreams of space-age exploration, all the while their investigation into drum machines, synthesizers, samples matched with their organic live instrumentation work to create a unique atmospheric dubbed out sound.

some might say jordan fields is one of the most criminally underappreciated figures to rise out of chicago in the late 90s, not for people who know what s what though. after a career spanning more than 20 years he has established himself as one of the key figures of the underground. coming out of where everything started, chicago, jordan released records on a handful of key labels like catalyst, track mode, som underground, mood groove, maffia. he did not stop there and today he is still releasing bangers having never lost that magic touch that has kept him firmly grounded on the purest form of the underground, and that, after more than 20 years is pretty much unheard of. when we first contacted jordan we wanted to go back to where it all started, we wanted to be transported to late 90s chicago, to a time where it was all about the dance floor, when tracks meant something more than songs, when purely club-oriented music was the purest form of the underground. to be honest we were not expecting to get exactly what we wanted straight away, he immediately sent us a collection of tools straight out of dat tapes he had, going all the way back to the 90s and early 2000s, so yeah to say that we are excited with this release would be a huge understatement. this is a collection of tools meant for the dancefloor, not reminiscent of some gone by era, these are the real deal, made by a true master, 20 years ago, for the future.

professor rhythm is the production moniker of south african music man thami mdluli. throughout the 1980’s, mdluli was member of chart-topping groups taboo and cjb, playing bubblegum pop to stadiums. mdluli became an in-demand producer for influential artists (like sox and sensations, among many others) and in-house producer for important record companies like eric frisch and tusk. during the early ’80s, mdluli projects usually featured an instrumental dance track. these hot instrumentals became rather popular. fans demanded to hear more of these backing tracks without vocals, he says, so mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985 as professor rhythm. he got the name before the recordings began, from fans, and positive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to invest himself in a full-on solo project. it was the era just before the end of apartheid and house music hadn’t taken over yet. there wasn’t instrumental electronic music yet in south africa. as the ’80s came to a close, that was about to change.

music from memorys final compilation of 2017 sees the release of the double album 1 by 1, which brings together the works of american experimental musician geoffrey landers. during a period spanning from 1979 to 1987, this denver, colorado based multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer and engineer, conceived several solo albums. only two of these, the ever decimal pulse and habitual features along with the single breedlove were ever released on vinyl. being heavily involved in the local industrial/punk/new wave scene and wanting to create a recording studio available to record artists regardless of their financial circumstances landers set up the packing house studio in 1981. this analog 8-track recording facility was located in a former slaughterhouse in the stockyards of denver and was a place of significant activity for the next three years with the studio releasing recordings from numerous artists most notably allen ginsberg.

do yourself a favour and dance across the floor when listening to the new jacob korn-record, aptly titled son of gx. the music is heavily based on the good old yamaha electone organ. the home organ for the world s gentlemen was modified by jacob himself and is now an integral part of his studio. as you ll hear it on the ep, it injects a decent dose of fun into jacob s vision of house music. at least, you will instantly notice that when listening to singlefinger chord, a track that conquers the floor with its disco elements. rumours say that jacob s cat toddled on his poor man s yamaha cs80 when producing cats on organs. if that s true, the cat provided an irresistible hook to an already slamming, italo-inspired track. son of gx is every bit as compelling as the first two tracks with its synth trumpet glory while the slighty darker fun blocks sustains us with heavy percussion works straight out of the yamaha electone organ. on top, you ll get a remix for singlefinger chord by new york s jacques renault (let s play house) as digital bonus.

clean slate is the first release from addremove on swiss label thrènes. there isn’t a lot to say about addremove himself or herself as he/she prefers to keep their identity unrevealed, at least for the moment, so lets concentrate on the music. clean slate consists of 5 original tracks and a remix from jk flesh (project/alias of justin broadrick of godflesh, final and jesu).

superb unreleased 80s ambient cassettes remastered ! robert scott pearsons musiccan be seen as surrealist, impressionist, post industrial, mystical or avant-garde, but it goes beyond categories. his work embraces software, philosophy, poetry, visual arts, and generative algorithmic creation in general. at an early age, he began to experiment in this field, and released his first music privately on cassette, being part of the 80s underground industrial scene in seattle. post-industrial, futuristic, but not really nihilistic, his beautiful music melts expressive synth leads with arpeggios soundscapes, and drum machines flashes and lights, to take us in another reality.

the album is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. written and performed by peter wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi award winning, temporary norwegian writer karl ove knausgard and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. “the previous releases were about the “lonely” feelings, the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings i wanted to set free for a long time. the new album is about my life as it is right now, about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. this is a very personal album, but i also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to.- also musically the album is a big step forward for wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors.

i try to perform as honestly as possible — the soundbite borrowed from late dancer dudley williams for this record s second track could have been uttered by the mole himself. it s this candor that has allowed us to bear witness to a very marked and very audible transition from his days as a producer in montreal to becoming a part of the berlin scene. and what we have here is one result of that very explicit sonic metamorphosis. de la planet is our dyslexic subject s third studio album, one that stays true to his ethos of weird above all in the best possible sense. and yet it feels like something distinctly new. tapping his enormous reservoir of vinyl and sampling the odd film have acted as complement to the jaw-dropping arsenal of synthesizers at de la plante s disposal—a battery of machines he s been quietly improving his skills on during the past few years. or not so quietly, perhaps. the man himself would probably say -i m coming out of the woodshed-, and go off on a tangent about sonny rollins and his saint of a wife. but that s a story for another sheet.

the intergalactic research institute for sound presents de, a compilation of various artists representing georgian electronic and ambient music. / de is a compilation of music from artists of different backgrounds getting together in order to showcase the dynamic influences within the georgian scene. tbilisi is getting worldwide recognition at the moment for its booming club scene, but what this project aims to illustrate is what is happening outside of the club context. natalie beridze who has been performing worldwide since 2004 is known as the first female electronic music artist in georgia, rezo glonti has built his studio inside the hull of his boat, and zesknel is a resident of the renowned bassiani club, while myi and severiane were discovered thanks to myspace, soundcloud, and word-of-mouth. all these talents manage in their own ways to present / de, with murky and melancholic cuts. melancholia is at the core of beauty in georgia. that is not the case in germany and many other cultures, where melancholia is often charged and bound to a negative feeling, which some might perceive as weakness. consequently, one could be tempted to say that even if it‘s electronic music, de has a traditional georgian quality. but that would be putting art in boxes or cases because what is georgian art nowadays, when so many artists from this origin are scattered around? as giorgi maisuradze states in his mission statement for de, the world is their home.

in the whole history of hip-hop music, few groups can claim to have been as influential and important as joseph saddler’s group grandmaster flash & the furious five. many of the genre’s signature elements and trademarks can be traced back to the supergroup founded by the grandmaster, their discography was among the first to feature recordings of scratching and turntablism, their’s was the first to feature songs with political and social commentary, they were the first to refer to rappers as mcs, some might even say they were the group that first coined the term hip-hop.

after the long awaited and acclaimed return of the notorious manie sans de&#769,lire on june records, one-half of the group, trenton chase, returns on the label with a bold solo lp marking his departure from the sound of his previous releases on the imprint. for his first album attempt, trenton embarks on the search for everything and manages to encapsulate the whole essence of the june records ethos within 43 minutes of music. although initially not planned as an album, deadlock was conceived organically as it only took a few months for its completion during the artist’s most abundant 2017 studio spring sessions. this body of work transcends formulaic attempts to showcase a very refreshing and uncompromising take on synth music. chase followed a crude approach to songwriting, rehearsing and improvising live until the best take would eventually become the final track. artwork by florent mazzocchetti.
