since it’s inception in 1991 on the streets of glasgow, soma records has stood for uncompromising quality of the highest level in every area it operates. stuart mcmillan & orde meikle formed slam during the acid house explosion in the late 80’s and then together with friends glenn gibbons & dave clarke they forged one of electronic music’s most widely known and well respected labels. with mcmillan & meikle as the figureheads with their slam project and influenced by the early detroit techno scene, soma quickly began to develop it’s own sound and with their eyes firmly fixed on a vision of the future, the team began the quest to instill their unquenchable thirst for electronic music into the world around them. soma quickly became an international brand as slam’s anthemic “positive education” brought about an electronic renaissance that saw the group thrust into the limelight and green lit the furious rise of the label.

following mervs ep, taped artifact now presents a new outing by the label co-founder kevin arnemann. with three original cuts, showcasing the labels characteristic dub-influenced techno sound, the ep is complemented with two remixes by jonas kopp. arnemanns ‘trash polka ep kicks off with saturated 808-grooves, driven by steady dub-chords and hard hitting claps. next, the original track sees a special dub influenced treatment by jonas kopp. the in spain residing argentinian delivers a stripped down, yet high energized techno version. as a digital exclusive, kopp prepares a second interpretation, following the tradition of a classic rooted dub sound. on the flipside, ‘revertigo sees arnemann utilise a rumbling break beat, topped with icy rides, blissful dub chords and cinematic pads, taking you on an energetic trip. ‘ideology is bringing the ep to a closing. with heavily processed chords and hard hitting drums, kevin arnemann creates a suspense that leave you wanting for more.

so gerd and philipp were due to play xoyo one saturday night and the club is 6 minutes from my studio so i suggested we go there first to make tunes for a few hours. we made 2 songs that night and one of them is ‘reach out’. gerd did the drums on my 808, philipp wrote the beautiful lead part on my obxa and i did the bass in my cs80. i added the words a couple of weeks later, they are inspired by leonard cohen’s letter to his muse marianne ihlen on her deathbed. (joe goddard) including fantastic remixes by erol alkan and osborne.

“wit blad” is the result of a beautiful collaborative project that started with illustrator joost stokhof. he was asked as an artist in residence for amsterdam’s hortus botanicus, a place where joost locked himself up for a week alongside the finest biodiversity in the city. joost asked eefje de visser to join him for a day and eefje asked nuno dos santos to form a powerful trinity of which “wit blad” is the unmistakable evidence.

antoine harispurus was raised by a robot called v.i.c.t.o.r. the robot took care of little antoine and early on he gave him music lessons and also the right equipment, for example a roland 808. robotic, mechanical precision became significant for antoines music and soon he left the safety of his mothers toy store for the huge european club scene under his new pseudonym golden bug.
this year he releases two songs as a 7 inch vinyl and in digital format on hoga nord rekords. the a-side, “viaje a tenderloin” sounds like the inside of an east german military liaison in 1975 where the tabulating machines haven’t had service since the raise of the berlin wall. on the b-side “hitodoma”, guest vocalist jessica ho plays with her voice in a bubbly way above golden bugs characteristic metallic, world music influenced sounds and beats. the music would fit perfectly in a vast alien mountain landscape.
in conclusion, the music on this 7 inch is the sound of human and robot in close symbiosis - golden bug is music by robot and human for robot and human.

first lp in new series from finland, this subdue jazz drone album has the quality of dusk, but is never darker than the nordic summers. atonal & forceful at times, still padded and invitingly warm, it has 4 classy pieces that enjoy being on the fringes while slowly capturing the ear when organs drone, the tr-808 thumps, the percussive double bass and the saxophone layers fog of melodic growing waves of groove.

having hallmarked their success through their ability to showcase the hottest talents in dance music, whilst being renowned for curating some of the finest compilations over the years, londons finest party collective, future disco now offers a warm welcome to gimbrère to the imprint. the young dutchman steps up to the plate with his heavy weighted disco weapon, a thing, seeing ava regular jordan on the remix duty. kicking things off, gimbrere teases with a series of sweet melodic disco grooves under a booming range of 808 kicks, slowly sweeping off the filters to let the passionate vocal howls let loose and tear through the speakers. coupled with thunderous crashes and well deserved breakdowns, this track is without a doubt some real peak time business from the flying dutchman. on the flipside, jordan lays one down for the early hours, switching up the beat into a trashy hi-hat affair, making room for a wobbly old school bass and synthline to playfully glide along with the sam-ple hooks. two completely different, yet equally as satisfying cuts, rounding off what is yet again an-other quality release from the future disco crew.

under cover for many years, this affie yusuf two tracker finally sees the light of day on the acclaimed mindyourhead imprint. comes on a generally deep green, mixed colour marbled 12’’ vinyl. affie yusuf paved the way uk acid house scene and so much more, releasing techno and acid throughout his career. mindyourhead records recognises that sometimes you need to look a little bit into the past to move ahead and has re-launched the label with this vinyl only release. ‘parrot soup’ is a fine example of just how a track title can have absolutely no relevance to the music whatsoever. this is a lovingly constructed example of how to convey images with sound, this music renders images brimming with joy and loss, icy cold chills and the warmth of the first rays of sun on a spring morning. tight, punchy drums with crisp 808 snares and driving toms lovingly complimented with dream-like pad sequences, soul searching strings and lush bassline form a quality crossover track that will appeal to lovers of many styles of techno and house. ‘something special’ is on a different tip, more driving and direct in style with the ‘everybody…’/ ‘something special’ vocal samples put to great use (need to be heard in context!) and that essential marching ‘affie acid’ bassline. the lead follows a similar pattern to the acid but pulls your head in a slightly different direction leaving the listener suitably twisted!! this proper ‘party acid’ has just the right level of balls to destroy a dancefloor without scaring off the faint of heart. lovely work affie!!

look we re five records deep and yes, we arent sure which tune is on which side. but luckily, this release is as high concept as speed 2: cruise control. on one side you will find ad, which samples an inspiring speech given by the heroic angela davis at southbank in 2017. listen to her wisdom as you play this in your front room at 7am to people who suddenly can t quite look at their hands properly. the other side pas greets you with warnings of atomic explosions over a riotous jam between a yamaha cs-10 and a sturdy analogue 808 clone. if you have a pressing need for air raid sirens, this is for you. we hope you like this west friends release. there will be more.

david mayer’s career and background is marked by a desire to keep moving and experiencing new perspectives. having finally settled in berlin, the german dj and producer has built up an enviously diverse back catalogue on labels such as connected frontline, objektivity, gruuv, audiomatique and keinemusik. with his first release on acid pauli and nico stojan’s ouie label, mayer brings his trademark groove to the fore once more. ‘the call’ is a mid tempo chugger built around a kick, clap and 808 blip, before a more organic groove develops. the slowed down chants and wigged out synth line take the vibe into afro cosmic territory, without losing the original energy. ‘sooner’ is a little more urgent - a crisp, forward leaning rhythm and a deep, subby bass lead the way, before another frazzled synthesiser takes us on a melodic walkabout. ‘black queen’ is another example of mayer’s slick drum programming, keeping things zesty on the dance floor but with acres of space to lose yourself in.

10 years after his last lp on vinyl, the legendary funkmaster ozone, one of the kings of the underground funk movement is back with an explosive new lp! as always on his records, there is a p-funk side and an e-funk side. there are all the elements that have characterized its unmistakable sound since the beginning of the funkmaster ozone era! power analog synthesizers, talkbox, vocoder, dmx, 808 and his absolutely amazing funk touch. the lp includes a featuring with the wonderful voice of jamie davis & the touch of h.m.klotz in the song -freaky friday-, an incredible master piece which seems to have come directly from the 80s! and also a great collaboration with another superb artist like eddy funkster on -integrity-. the lp, is a full trip into the universe of funkmaster ozone, a must have reléase!

pyramid transmissions is back with the first solo release on the label from pt creator adj. street life ep is four tracks of bass driven future electro music from one of the longest standing members of the scene. street life part 1 is pure unadultered future bboy music with punching kick drums, dirty acid and characteristic glitches added to the mix for that unmistakable adj sound aimed at making you dance while getting in your head simultaneously and adj always looks to the future but with nods to his past of 808 electro music.

monotone is back on wax! after almost 10 years since we have seen a monotone vinyl release, the return is strong. monotone boss larry mccormick comes with a 6 track mini album with straight up pure electro goodness. the follow up to his album on shipwrec entitled intelectro, larry mccormick aka exzakt offers us a more puristic electro sound that he is known for. kicked off by show the way we get that vintage exzakt sound with crisp 909/808 layed kicks, one step ahead goes the more melodic route but still keeps the beat moving. move because i said so is a fun and funky classic electro sound. creator. vibes are massive on this riding melodic jam. eyes on me is a journey, an atmospere with trancy keys and subsonic pads. magic city is a bit of a departure from the normal sound yet still retains the low end.

205 recordings is back in 2018 with more previously unreleased gems from the heyday of hardcore/jungle. this time around, it s back to 93 with four tracks of serious darkness from dj wax, a well known dj/producer of the time responsible for the classic tune -moments so dark-. -lostwax ep- features two freshly unearthed tracks which have never been heard before in any form: the moody-yet-uplifting -808 darkness pt2-, and the absolutely relentless -thunderbirds are go-. also included is a previously unreleased remix of a track off dj wax s darkwax ep, here titled -not for sale-. finally, for those without the original, a freshly remastered version of “moments so dark” is included, as played back in the day by grooverider, ray keith, dj ratty, simon bassline smith, and many more hc/jungle dons.

dan bay is a frankfurt am main situated composer, dj, live-performer and musician. most of the sounds he is working with, are based on classical synthesizers combined with field recorded samples. his latest vinyl-release is published at the label sucio. since 2017 dan bay is resident at the radio x fade dj night and can frequently be heard at clubs playing dj-livesets or analog synthesizer livesets with his electronic deep house band the mpc orchestra. his vocal-electropop project dan bay & maya will be playing several international concerts in clubs and festivals in 2018.

after previously releasing starship commander woooo woooos mastership lp, left ear records have continued excavating the archives of the artist more formally known as omer coleman jr. the result is two handpicked mid 80’s instrumentals salvaged from the original master tapes, as well as an extended vocal edit on the flip for good measure. after laying his alter ego to rest omer made a handful of electronic releases on his own kansas based remo label. of these releases left ear has selected their two favourite instrumentals: lovin babe sure is fun and so good. lovin babe sure is fun was originally released in 85 and was created to celebrate a time in america where the economy was good, people were happy and love was in the air, the essence of which omer captured using his roland 808 and 303 in what may best be described as acid-boogie. so good on the other hand is a sensual downtempo cut shaped with heavy-bass, telephone samples and guitar solos that conjures images of late night rendezvous and compromising scenarios.

elektroliza is a series of club events formed by a group of dedicated electronic music enthusiasts in 2006. it is hosted by ljubljana s channel zero, a legendary club that is part of the autonomous social centre metelkova which used to be the slovenian headquarters of the yugoslav national army.

filling a void in slovenia s electronic dance scene, the night was a hit from the start and quickly grew into a diverse and successful series focusing on new and exciting electro, acid and dark techno.

elektroliza hosted many memorable dj and live acts by performers/producers/pioneers coming out of international music incubators in gothenburg, the hague, berlin and as far as detroit. even more importantly, it brought together producers and crews from the former yugoslav republics of slovenia, croatia, serbia and macedonia. inside the former yugoslavian military barracks djs and producers from skopje to ljubljana began bonding again through music, forming new friendships, starting new collaborations and dancing the night away... in -electro city ljubljana-.

madcap - river soul: this iconic track has been sought after for months after being hammered in the clubs by some of the top deejay in the world. the classic drums, are complimented perfectly by a booming 808 baseline, rhodes keys, echoing flutes, and sultry vocals that fit seamlessly into the groove. madcap has created an undeniable groove that will be played for years to come. classic!

brame & hamo are back with the third release on their eponymous imprint. trants and club orange effortlessly upheld the berlin based duos reputation for dancefloor ready hits, with the latter selling out in one day. picking up where the others left off, limewire ep is a nod to their early influences channelling house, techno, trance and breakbeat. over three tracks, brame & hamo brandish the party starting spirit they are rapidly becoming known for. broken beats feature heavily alongside subtle acid licks, uplifting harmonies and sweltering synth lines. parade rain is a peak time house roller with pulsing bass, meditative pads and airy pipes that polish it off to make a fine rendition to early 90’s house. sports complex the darkest of the ep, builds an intense energy with a heavy hitting 808, shuttering reflections, a driving 303 line topped off with a trance-inducing melody that makes this into a big room bomb. the title track is a breakbeat workout honing a classy piano riff complimented with emotional synths, strings and more acid lines, a fruit for clarity. finally tuff city kids aka gerd janson & lauer round it up with a club ready interpretation of their title track, adding more drum layers, a jittering bassline and a simple but effective melody to finish it off. limewire ep finds the duo exploring a range of influences, expertly referencing various styles whilst still weighing in the sound that is now unmistakably theirs.

“lost tracks vol. 2” contains 4 previously unreleased demos recorded between 1997 and 1999. the duo fused 80’s european new wave/italo disco with 90’s detroit electro acts like le car and dopplereffekt. by utilizing verse-chorus structures, they playfully shook up the loop based hard techno and electro that was popular at the time. their studio set up at the time was a korg ms-20, roland sh-101, tr-606, tr-808, siel dk80, and boss dr-660 drum machine. the songs are direct, spontaneous, seemingly improvised in places. miss kittin sings about falling in love in the new millennium, snuff movies and controlling the unknown trip to death, all in her cheekily derisive french accent. all songs have been transferred from the original dat tapes by the band and remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios. the vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket featuring a black and white photo of the duo taken in 1996. each lp includes a postcard with liner notes from miss kittin and the hacker designed by eloise leigh. as miss kittin says of these demos, “we were naive, innocent, adventurous and we didn’t expect anything in return”

the aesthetics of this ep is related to the universe electro / idm early 90 s by a choice of very precise synthesizer. p6, sh- 101, tb-303, tr-808 and to coordinate the whole an rs7000 which comes to rhythm this refusal of modernity. foreign sequence digs into the techniques of the past to find the answers, he shows his know-how here and uses it to express a multitude of emotions between nostalgia and optimism.

norwegian duo ost & kjex make a welcome return to crosstown rebels. their private dancer ep is a masterclass in producing dance-floor ready rhythms. they welcome fellow norwegian whalesharkattacks to the mix to provide her dark yet dreamy vocals. we had a fascination with tinas private dancer since first being exposed to it by pat sharp on sky trax in the 80s. whalesharkattacks personifies everything thats cool about the 80s, so when we met her we knew we had to cut a version ost & kjex private dancer is as dark as it is melodic, with eerie drum pads and a medley of dreamt synths. norwegian vocalist whalesharkattacks, whose music has been described as 808 goth, lends a distorted vocal. on nightingale a burdenging bass adds a sense of urgency interlaced with vocals reminiscent of the 80s era. cosmic synths float side by side samples of beautiful bird song. a titillating work of art with a mesmerising beat.

anklepants introduces his brand new album for detroit undergroud, a collection of ten cuts, made with his very own arsenal of digital and hardware toys, most of them self made and customised for his purposes. this multi faceted artist creates a blend of twisted ryhthms, synthetic melodies and weird textures and noises, yet danceable stuff but with heavy focus in experimentation and risk.

for the past two years, flee has been working on its first issue entitled benga music – a signature genre from kenya. conceived as an attempt to document a kenyan timeless music genre – benga – this issue is also a visual and audial tribute to the heritage of east african music. approaching this musical genre with a new and innovative perspective, the first release of flee features a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. faithful to the local essence of the genre while transcending unproductive nostalgia, the two objects ensure that the vibrant traditional roots of the benga movement interact with a contemporary approach. to make this initiative possible, we joined forces with celebrated kenyan journalists, ondiso madete and emmanuel mwendwa, and collaborated with renowned international specialists such as douglas paterson. this great team work translated into a well-documented manuscript, with exciting articles, exclusive authentic photos of the era and creative present-day illustrations celebrating the genre. accompanying the journal, the record tells a surprising story, starting with the pioneers of benga (daniel owino misiani, george ramogi and the migori superstars) and concluding with the modern respectful re-interpretations of nik weston, jaakko eino kalevi, and africaine 808, blowing the dust of the original scores.
