frankfurt based producer, dj and music lover martin heimann presents his debut single salto on carry on 008. remaining faithful to its name, the small label puts out another piece of limited wax every once in a long while. enrooted in the soundscapes of 80s proto house the original version of salto is a thriving piece of octave liberation. consistent changes between harmonics break up the repetitive structure, while fm pads and the 303 are performing a little duet. the release is ennobled by two proper remixes from moon b (peoples potential unlimited) and jex opolis (good timin). while moon b keeps it bubblin’ with some extra analogue funk bounce and subtle italo dance floor energy, the b-side is jexi-fied with some embellishment to the cords, change in the bassline and a nice 808 snap. on top mr. opolis adds some mysterious but cheesy vocals samples that match perfect with the moody 80s orchestral stabs.

2016 repress , legendary deeply rooted house records comes with a new serie releases called rootstrax. first ep is by a mysterious french artist that remains unknown for now. however, the listener that knows a bit about the french house music history can easily define the roots of the producer (not saying he can point out who he is :-) the influences of early 90s fcom/fnac sound is present combined with some classic chicago house... this is exactly the concept of rootstrax. interesting concept and cool record that makes us wonder if this has been dome by an old fox or a young puppy producer? for sure this sounds very mature and delivers 12inch extraordinaire!

on the first side rumore and orphidal are opening the release with a 115 bpm proto-ambient track filled with liquid grooves and tribal elements while in the second cut they are showing us their faster and deep-acid side with conversations.
on the other surface autre is killing it with filter sessions 329, a mental techno trip did while experimenting with his new filter bank, an 808 and a juno 106. the b2 is an elegant track with a fred p-esque touch, suitable for every kind of dance floor.

a1 nubian mindz - deep in raves: well known for his versatile and rich production, colin delivers once more. with a quite suitable name - deep in raves is just that. a deep plunge into dark and rave-like atmosphere. after a short intro layered with an ominous voice, massive bassline takes over and drives the track through the darkest curves. enriched with short percussions and a synth stab this is quite a stomper best experienced on a good club soundsystem, preferably in the dark. a2 volster - nebula: almost obsessed with audio purity, volster manages to combine new and modern sounds with old-school genre roots. nebula is all about complexity. although it is based on an electro foundations, it s so much more. space filled with an oscillatory synth motion perplexed with smooth pads that gives the impression of an interstellar properties. no detail is left unengaged, from the 808 that keeps everything in motion to the subtle amount of panning. this is a beautifully crafted story by a producer who is slowly but steadily growing into one of the best croatian artists. b1 lucretio - dracula: the most famed beard of cadoneghe/italy has pulled another magic gem from his music source. widely known for his relentless tendency to push the analogue spectrum to it s extreme, lucretio surprises once more with his ability to blend simple pieces into an effective sub storm with almost comic like features. dracula is not your conventional tune and it s pretty obvious why as soon as you put the needle on. broke down rhythm is heavily fueled by polished but enormous sub background with sparse and ¥in your face¥ shots. seemingly random notes take a gloomy and powerful form during the break and soon the lurky atmosphere comes into picture. this is truly brilliance in it s full simplicity. if only bram stoker could hear this, he would probably be both stunned and amused! b2 james booth - jxst do it: one of our goals on vakum is to be on a lookout for a new and promising talents. berlin based james booth surely fits the bill. jxst do it is a seriously crafted track with rich rhythmic section wrapped in a steady build up. after the initial break-beat intro sliced in short chunks, subtle 303 bassline takes over and the rhythmic game begins. booth delivers a perfectly timed cuts accompanied by a diverse palette of percussions. this is a perfect piece for those build up moments in the club..

taking a brief detour from his normal abrasive distorted sound, pinion showcases his broad spectrum as an artist with the desire ep. the title track, desire (half measure),starts out of the gate with a thunderous half beat 808 coupled with a swinging hihat pattern that slowly works ethereal vocal slices into the forefront, accompanied with a modulating synth pad that evolves into a defining melody. the sister track, desire (full measure), has very similar characteristics as the original, but allowing a little more edge for the dancefloor to build on. the third original track, recollection shifts gears quite drastically with a 135 bpm stormer with enough soul and melody to make the uncharacteristically fast tempo seem inconsequential. last, comes kyle geiger on remix duties to round out the ep with a housier take on desire, but still enough bite to fit nicely into any techno set.

sing like a bird (reprise) is a fresh version of the track originally released last year on peter van hoesen s time to express label, to which shuttle fans will have become familiar with in recent sets. it maintains the original s hazy reverbed flavour, but in the form of a more groove-oriented and psychedelic edit that sidelines much of the original s vocal track in favour of a snake enchanter-like synewave melody, for a less lyrical but equally musical new take. the b-side back here is an older track that shuttle has been holding back for a while, waiting for the right moment to reveal this atmospheric, melancholic and melodic track, in which intricately delayed layers of piano keys progressively unfold through a rich percussive background made of 808 rims, deep bass kicks, heavy toms and jazzy hats and rides.

following up the fantastic summer re-release of upsetting keys “empathy” ep, path records follows with its first new catalogue number since 2006. path 008 marks the return of artist fate 258, whose 1999 “why 2k” path 001 ep has been a hotly sought after item on discogs. the three-track ep contains two exciting new mixes of cult classic techno track “the path”. the a-side version “path to hell” is the harder of the pair, a dark edgy journey into the unknown with shuffling 808 rhythms providing much of the melody. “path to heaven” slows the groove down and adds warm juno pads throughout the mix for a very deep detroit flavored techno style. on the final track “heaven or hell” sort of a broken beat downtempo piece, sparse vocals and bladerunner samples mix to complete the dystopian concept. these mixes of “the path” are considered pre-mixes, as they were completed in 1998 before the original release of path 001. fate 258 is a project from brooklyn producer reade truth, known for his work over the last decades on labels such as planet e, sonic groove, n-syde, wurst and strictly rhythm to name a few. limited to 250 worldwide, with the first 100 including full black and white cover art.
