in the follow up to huxleys widow ep aus present their second offering of 2016 and in doing so welcome back two label favourites: timothy blake and marquis hawkes as hawkes & blake both artists made outstanding debuts for aus last year, with hawkes having more than a hand in blakes stormy search ep before delivering his own disco inflected hit chances. now we see a continuation of the studio chemistry as both parties join forces and present love precipitation: a pair of no frills bombs built strictly for the dancefloor. playful piano lines and jubilant synths are propelled by expertly crafted 909 drums throughout, recalling in equal measure the classic garage sound of detroit and the soulful grooves that emanated from new jersey in the 90s. with hawkes & blake aus continue to maintain the high quality in 2016 and offer us an insight into an exciting new production pairing.

garrett david and adam rowe return to stripped & chewed with an accomplished new ep, “now that we are here, where are we?”. also known as the bell boys, the pair were last seen on a funky electro 7” for star creature following 2013’s “hotel garma ep” for discovery recordings. this new five track record finds the chicago-based duo making major strides forward in their already rather mature sound, fusing razor-sharp rhythms with plush melodies informed by deep knowledge of house music history – no surprise from two buyers for chicago institution gramaphone records.

after a successful debut last year, london-based label welfare returns with its second release. once again, music comes courtesy of the label’s owners and is aimed at the dance-floor. zigzagging the grey area between house and techno, hypnotic and relenting moments offered by the turbine hall and anicca are offset by more melodic and experimental sounds of narcopaloma and a is for atom.

spanish dj & producer, eduardo de la calle, has continued to explore the outer limits of the electronic palette since his cadenza records debut back in 2013, clocking up stellar releases for the likes of mule musiq, hivern discs, be as one and nonplus over the last couple of years. eduardo returns to cadenza in february with the ‘anima animus’ single, coupling two tracks of refined techno for your listening pleasure. taking inspiration from the psychologist/philosopher carl jung’s concept of anima and animus (and do take the time to explore this), eduardo marries arpeggiated synths and melodic chords with a soft kick and tantalizing hats, producing a slick piece of reflective techno that’s alive with melody and groove. on ‘north pole’, we get more of the signature ‘de la calle’ sound, subaquatic bass and searing, melancholic strings play out over a steady mechanical beat, nodding its head not only to the detroit masters but also to the european new wave sounds that influenced the motor city artists in the first instance. another assured single release from eduardo that will further solidify his place in the current electronic music landscape.

inoue shirabe is no newcomer for those who have been following antinotes releases last year. with function spring / gravitation of acidtree, his third release on the parisian imprint, the okayamas producer delivers what may be his two most sophisticated tracks so far. with function spring, inoue shirabe continues to investigate the subtle equilibrium between opposite feelings of sadness and joy that he successfully reached on down into the black church, on his previous 12inch. this time, the japanese producer uses celestial elements (bells, an organ in the distance that we can hear punctually) to counterbalance the roughness of the rhythmical section, in order to plunge the listener into a profound state of meditation.

this particular set of songs benefits from having been heavily road-tested over the last two years, resulting in greater distillation and focus.

new york s gunnar haslam appears on l.i.e.s. with his third lp for the label titled lebesgue measures. picking up where he left off on his last long player mirrors and copulation we hear an evolution in his sound throughout the nine songs. still there are the understated yet grooving acid lines next to carefully programmed drums and attention to surrounding detail which creates beautiful and balanced atmospheres. there is a brightness coupled with an underlying sullenness tapping into some sort of mystical and seemingly obscured narrative which moves through the entire record. deep and immersive stuff to say the least.

a firm favourite in the hot creations camp, jey kurmis is back on board the label following his recent kari ep with another killer release in the form of the not too flabbeh ep. the release features two-standout originals, with a heavy duty re-edit of a third original from label boss jamie jones not too flabbeh features belgium producers nukov & yelmet, creating a bona fide hit! complete with tongue in cheek, catchy vocals, rolling bass, and infectious groove, its a winner! jamie jones steps up again, this time to do a reedit of farno, a four to the floor edgy killer. last up is monkle with its tripped vocals and old school stabs!

soulphictions follow-up to last years riot ep delivers the heat again on musik krause!

the bush is a homage to the place where i have lived for the last decade (askew road). the askew road itself is slowly changing so i wanted to document all the places that play a big part in mine and my families lives before they eventually get sold for more flats or tescos. 002 was all about the mighty sun pub which has now been sold and transformed into a costa coffee and an estate agents. next up is our local park which hopefully will never see change as its been our little slice of heaven in w12 since we moved here.

over the past several years, j(ay).a.d has released several eps touching on footwork, dubstep, grime and dancehall, approaching dance music with a wide open lens that tends to blur accepted genre lines. a bjork co-sign earlier last year jettisoned the amsterdam-based artist into the popular consciousness. raised in suriname, j(ay).a.d is the consummate dance music outsider and despite living in amsterdam, his music hardly ever fits in with the citys house and techno hegemony. the ogri ai ep is very much a blueprint record, simultaneously paranoid and dark, its seeped in industrial dread and natural beauty. and while many of j(ay).a.ds contemporaries attempt to create more alien sounding music at the expense of a human element, the ogri ai ep has been a overlooked milestone for the hybrid footwork & grime realm, and its now back on re-stock.

*retraieste romaneste* is a lp in which music speaks for it self, like the translation of the title *relive the romanian way* this original minimal and deep sound of young artist dragutesku brings us one step closer to the roots. the track names are picked after the names of great writers and poets from last century topped by the original artwork, this album makes us relive those moments of pure, inspiring originality once again.

‘escape from reality’ as first track, goes down as a bleeping submarine, deep diving into underwater caves where a slow and hypnotic rhythm reverberates through ears and mind. second cut ‘alchemy’ continues the interdimensional explorations, and after long intro, it gradually detaches from the surface reaching a leaden sky. drums and claps alternates on a soundscape of constant roars, holding the track in a steady mesmerizing jingle. the b-side opens with ‘found myself’, edgy broken beat with a stronger and more club-oriented dynamism which finds its best shot in the last cut ‘chain reaction’. a ravishing synthline drives through tribalesque drums, snares and thunderclaps to close the record with a mystic vibe....

vent is happy to deliver yet another take on stripped back essential techno. stephanie sykes has had the opportunity to entertain many dancefloors since her last ep on vent, and we are astonished with her artistic progression. the sonic imagery is smoky and bass heavy, perfect for those heady dancefloor experiences. and as if the package isn’t perfect already, cassegrain delivers an absolute killer remix with raw, truly minimalistic techno.

though ronde music is a label gathering producers from various horizons, might it be ambient, noise, experimental or electroacoustic, they all have a common creed : the loop. jo created this locked groove label just one year ago, spreading extensively the sensitive patterns of artists such as vadim svoboda, sharp, antigone, edith progue, dscrd and cédric pigot & jow. a single 1 loop bar is to be repeated until harmonies free themselves, patterns are then stretching to the point where they merge into a psychoacoustic phenomenon. -wouldn t it be nice to have this dance last forever ?- ronde music asks all of those who haven t yet joined the round.

a year after his last outing on the label, gunnar haslam is back on delsin with four more tracks of idiosyncratic techno. opening up this ep with the title track, haslam cooks up a spangled brew of erratic synths and spinning hi hats and ties them together with a heavy rubber kick drum. followed by sarsi which is then completely different, its a beatless and emotionally forlorn cut that still manages to take you somewhere special. deep dancefloor business taking over on the b-side. scurrying alien sounds closed by a frenzied techno trip. each track here is different from the last, and each track here is a refreshing proposition from one of the most interesting guys around.

at long last, coalmine records is pleased to release guilty simpson and small professor s highly acclaimed collaborative lp, highway robbery, in vinyl format. weighing in at 11 tracks, which includes the vinyl-only bonus track of zilla rocca s remix of go, the album places the listener in a seemingly post-apocalyptic detroit where the mentality is feast or famine.

with the release of this set of remixes figure head len faki reveals previously unseen shades of both the source material and his own musical identity. produced over the course of last year and originally never intended to come out, the hidden objects were to remain just that – hidden from anyone but faki himself who was privately developing a different side of his in the studio.

whirling hall of knives is a collaboration between trensmat founders magnetize and the last sound. harsh smouldering circuits and eruptions of panicky white noise have a profoundly unsettling quality, a sense of gnawing paranoia but interspersed with moments of almost euphoric epiphany, as if in the grip of an unshakeable 4am psychosis a growing sense that the door will be kicked in at any second and the world outside will come pouring in. psyche electronics of a particularly greasy and grime-flecked hue... the remix comes courtesy of downwards duo, talker. the american duo of karl meier and jon krohn (a.k.a stave) turn in a heavyweight version of vacuulum on the flip...

the white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. but since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination, and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action.
certainly not in the case of junior boys, who’ve readied a new album, big black coat, via city slang. a strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what jeremy greenspan and matt didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release.

whilst its neighbour has always taken the plaudits on the party front the steely city of sheffield has its own house history, with much of it residing in the warm buzzing darkness of the studio. its here that we find our latest robsoul rookie. a fresh name for the label, but a producer who is far from new to the game. tommy vicari jnr’s first release was pressed to the black gold and released back in 2004. since then there have been sporadic outings, but the last two years have seen a reinvigorated tommy roll out over ten new releases and play a huge part in putting sheffield s house music firmly back on the map. threshold of eternity sees tommy drop the northern grit to replace it with shimmering warmth and sunshine vibes across all four tracks. fidgeting rhythms, chopped samples and groove-heavy beats and bass are spliced together to create an essential feel-good release.

italian dj and producer manuel fogliata hasnt released a lot of records over the last ten years, but the few he has put out have always been worth tracking down. perhaps best known for his work alongside donato dozzy in creating the much sought-after aquaplano records at the tail end of the last decade, nuels solo outings have been just as consistent and just as impressive.

the energy and versatility were used to when reinier zonneveld takes the decks is immediately evident in his latest ep. opening preceedings with sharp bust, a straight and to the point trancy bassline leads the way. decked by mechanic stabs and hi-hats, the groove is simply hypnotic and relentless. rushchamber, on the other hand, bears a subversive groove, with a minimal and dark bassline. glitchy cut up vocals give an eerie feel, as the whole atmosphere becomes more and more immersive by the way of multi-layered drums. the final offering, flatchat is anything but flat. its intricate groove shares the dark and immersive territory of the previous track, while another set of cut up vocals draw instant attention. a descending lead padded with reverb and stabby synths, the last track rounds up the release, ending on a grave and intense note.

after the success of last years various artists backpack ep, french house label d3 elements is back with another fine four track affair that pulls together some key producers. detroit soulful house star terrence parker is back once again, and he is joined by d-knox, dan curtin and techelectro.

shawn o’ sullivan marks return to shifteds avian imprint with a four track ep under his 400ppm alias. following on from 2013s non nocere, the new yorker pairs trademark stripped back drum programming with heady, warping drones and frenetic sequencing. even at full throttle, careful attention to detail lends the productions a degree of musicality oft missing from contemporary techno. subtle nods to idm feature, and references to o sullivans work with katie o sullivan as further reductions remain in the form of spacious verb and fluid atmospherics, but the focus is undeniably on the dance floor. printed inner and outer sleeve... black vinyl.

its not often you hear a techno record produced by a total of five people. when it happens, it’s usually to mark a passage and make a statement. sometimes it is a matter of celebrating a rita of passage, a shift into maturity and the embodiment of a new skin. this is what repitch is doing with the fourth and final installment in their “features” series, reuniting all the crew for the the final blast of what’s been a long and massive barrage of heavy techno. this is the collaboration to end them all: repitch founders ascion, d. carbone and shapenoise have shared the studio with longtime allies and. together, they explore a common ground made of pounding metallic percussions, gutwrenching bass and thick, furious grooves, with each producer bringing his own peculiar contributions to the table. this last installment marks the end of a process that accompanied repitch throughout its whole existence, thus enhancing the beginning of a new chapter in the label’s creative output.

having made his family life a priority for the last three years, picotto was nonetheless busy in the studio, adding to his beyond-extensive catalogue of releases and preparing us for a new salvo of pumping techno, jacking tech-house and quintessential club material. from heart to techno, picotto s ninth studio album features a number of collaborations with regular partners in crime riccardo ferri and devid, who both throw in extra measures of italian flair to the mix.

toresch were formed last year by detlef weinrich (tolouse low trax), viktoria wehrmeister and jan wagner and if there’s anything that links them to suba, it’s the fact that they are also cultural adventurers with fascinating back stories.

there are also more frosty cuts that sound like a chilly autumn walk, tracks that feature emotive neo-classical piano pieces and suggestively rhythmic compositions that sooth your mind. the second half of the record touches on church like passages of synth heavy sounds, strikingly sad violins and lo-fi arrangements that sound, one hopes, a little like what you might hear as you pass from this life to the next.
