massive 11-piece latin american afrobeat combo nelda piña y la boa have been exploring the vast rhythms of west african music and its many branches within their home base country of colombia for the last 3 years. influenced by the contrasting sounds and traditions of colombia s disparate atlantic & pacific coast cultures, they bring a unique twist to the familiar afrobeat lineup that is accentuated by their cantadora nelda piña, a singer from the bolivar region who was born in the 1940s. once again, colombia and its deep reservoir of modern and traditional musicians prove the awesome alchemy of melding the sounds and aesthetics of old and young generations.

following on from last years exceptional ‘obsession ep’ from art crime is a budding young talent by the name of will lister. originally from lyme regis, will moved up to london to attend goldsmiths university and in his spare time he helps us out behind the counter here at the shop. when he’s not here at the shop you can also hear him playing records on his balamii radio show or his monthly club night, ‘the aten’. ‘the phantom ep’ is his production debut and we’re extremely happy to be putting it out on our main imprint. the title track opens up the ep with heavily reverbed pads, echoed claps, crunchy percussion and repetitive synth stabs that all work together to create spaced-out atmosphere that’s full of twist and turns. flipping over to the b-side, ‘after the light’ picks up the pace with a driving high-hat rhythm and full-bodied kicks that underpin warm piano keys and smooth synth lines. ‘agency’ closes proceedings by turning up the intensity to full with a masterclass in building tension.

way back in 1996, at the height of the widely acknowledged golden period for electronic music, d-saw a.k.a andré winter released a true classic on hamburgs highly influential superstition label. track 10:30 stood the test of time, becoming widely regarded as a key moment in european techno music history, despite its modest impact at the time. now, 20 years later, andré revisits the source material courtesy of some killer remixes on oliver huntemanns senso imprint. hamburg’s own h.o.s.h. two of paris’ most respected artists get together for their second collaborative extended player this year. dan ghenacia and chris carrier have been entrenched in the electronic scene in their hometown for a long while now, both men building a strong rep through consistently great music and dj performances. earlier this year they joined forces on ‘just a sin’, released via carrier’s adult only label, now they’re back with the follow-up on apollonia. across three deadly tracks, the duo explore their love of music making machines to the fullest – each track taking its name from ‘sweet heart’, translated into different languages. ‘schatzi’ works off a modular synth, bursting out of the blocks with a wobbly bassline which supports a range of subtle effects together with infrequent vocal clips. as the track progresses warm rising pads and female vocal snippets create an entrancing atmosphere. next up we get an arabian twist with ‘habibi’. a pervading air of mystery presents itself right from the off, with warped voices lurking in the background as the rhythm lures you into its murky groove. as the track progresses more eerie pads and effects are layered over the stepping bassline giving it a very creepy feel. finally, french vibes comes through with ‘cherie’ on side b. the track draws its energy from the busy, though crisp, percussive elements and a b-line that groans in unison with the beats. a simple chime remains present throughout, keeping it minimal yet interesting.

stix records is a sub-division of favorite recordings, recently launched with a first official single by taggy matcher birdy & nixon (stix033), who pleased us with two reggae-rocksteady renditions of the famous black keys. precisely specialized in the exercise of producing covers with a reggae twist, the new label presents his first album entitled *disco reggae*. many artists faithful to the stable of favorite recordings and its various sub-labels are invited for the occasion: the dynamics, blundetto, grandmagneto, 7 samurai, john milk or taggy matcher. all came and brought their respective touch to this first compilation, with among other things some of the rarest titles from their big single records’ years, but also 4 new and exclusive productions. each of them delivers a great disco-reggae version of classic hits by some artists as diverse as madonna, herbie hancock, justin timberlake, the commodores, the o jays, curtis mayfield, harry nilsson or sugarhill gang. whatever the genre or the period, nothing can resist their inventiveness and creativity, to the point sometimes we confuse between originals and covers. everything is remastered and cut at carvery records (uk), known for their expertise in caribbean and disco music. the vinyl lp comes in a deluxe version, housed in an old-school tip-on jacket.
