primitive trust is the coming together of two experienced musical minds. in one corner is will saul of the influential aus music empire, and in the other is tom mangan, aka tee mango, the producer who started millionhands record and clothing label. the pair met many moons ago and reconnected recently at a festival in morocco. they bonded over music, lunch and shared family travails - and as they both now live in somerset decided a little local studio collaboration seemed all but essential. between them, these consumate country gentlemen have seen plenty a musical styles come and go, so decided their best route forward would be to make music to please themselves. to that end, they holed themselves up in tee mangos woodshed studio with the following ground rules: they would make music only with the gear they had (mpc 2000, ableton, roland 101, juno, fender rhodes, various fx pedals) they would trust their instincts and go with first feelings they would embrace the joy of randomness if in doubt they would ask what would carl do? with that, you have the simple but effective mo of primitive trust. these sessions have resulted in a series of three eps to be released over the course of four months. each ep will feature 2 or 3 original tracks and one fresh remix, with unique artwork and an illustration by all-around visual auteur geoff mcfetridge. using the building blocks of house, and classic techno primitive trust can do zoned out and romantic, as much as driving and heady, but with an ease that comes from experience, years in the making. while tipping their proverbial hats to the past they also look to the future with their sound, mixing samples, wigged out synthwork and propulsive rhythms to create something honest and heartfelt that will stand the test of time

for the past four years francesco leali kept busy running parachute alongside co-owners manfredi romano and thomas feriero, producing under different monikers and touring the globe as half of cw/a. finally back as clockwork, leali reveals a five track ep featuring some of his rugged music to date. a briery shift into foggier territories where leali explores layered sound-design and broken rhythms, something he had only hinted in his previous work. online entity depicts lealis hindrance with modern societys social networking obsession. in contrast to what these services were actually intended for, leali explains, they seem to have impacted a lot of people negatively, resulting in unnecessary resentments, misinformation and feelings of proximity when these tools can easily alienate you from reality. constantly worrying about how you want people to perceive you is absurd already, but for many of us this constant sharing has become the only way to achieve happiness, to be satisfied. in an era where all of this is getting out of hand its essential to remind yourself of the things that truly shape you as an individual. with online entity i aimed for feelings of release, mutating resentments into something positive - more physical. i imagined it as a soundtrack to an escape from these very situations. the release showcases this approach with five club-ready numbers filled with calculated, pounding drums and gloomy atmospheres, with only rare glimpses of hope scattered throughout. to round things up we mobilised fellow parachute affiliate ayarcana and serbian techno pro lag who both deliver two startling interpretations of escape sequence and rumination.

an innate facet of the human condition is the very personal way we choose to process our own fatality. faced with dealing with the feelings of anxiety, death and fear after nearly drowning whilst diving in the south atlantic in his youth, ricardo donoso chose to channel them into his creative process. the result was scuba death, a project that was fully realised on donoso’s widely acclaimed 2014 further debut, nitrogen narcosis. after spending time devoted to establishing his kathexis label as well as delivering a trilogy of albums under his given name for the denovali label, donoso returns to further with a second scuba death offering, the worm at the core.

fresh off of a pair of well-received eps on his recently-launched manhigh imprint, berlins highly respected techno auteur henning baer makes his first appearance on nonplus with 4 excellently crafted, saturated machine techno tracks on the idea of instinct. following on feelings suggested in the title, the ep opens with a pair of more contemplative pieces: the title track’s spare arrangement puts mechanical rhythmic drive behind its exploration of dusky electronic atmospheres, while the feeling of dna is both brighter and slightly pacier, its hypnosis deriving from the pads and synthesizer sequences that circle the drums. ccc ii takes a darker approach to a similar idea, this time with the suggestion of polyrhythms in the distant and heavily-treated percussive elements circling in the background behind uneasy ambience. it builds to the closer spiritual quest, where overlaid rhythms in 3 and 4 are not easily reducible and create the tension at the track’s centre driving it to its conclusion.

tuamie returns to street corner music with holy ghost spirituals, the third release in scm’s gospel flip series. following jake one and ras_g’s collections, tuamie chops and flips his sanctified selections into raw beats. a no brainer for a tuamie fans, this will not be around long.

joining our label for the 4th release are dan andrei and kozo, under their collaboration named ak41, a fructuous project that offers three highly complex tracks.
on the a side you can find “icebreaker” solely, an eccentric sound with a steady bassline, percussive kicks, tripping shakers and a thoughtful, mysterious melody that touches all the frequencies of your body. turning to the b side we find “swingenious”, a groovier interpretation produced by a combination of spacey feelings and sophisticated instruments that will move every bone on the dancefloor. closing the ep is “in memoriam”, a melancholic version that is not short of an aggressive bassline, ambiguous vocals and deep introspects, all aligned to disconnect you from the reality of routine.

too many possibilities can also mean a tyranny of the what if.... in this light, celebrating less becomes vital. and thats exactly what swedish producer and studio barnhus affiliate simon haydo does in redux. all of the sounds in the albums nine tracks come from just one synth: the korg ms20. as simon puts it, the idea was to maximize the use of less, basically. less gear, less effects, less input from other people , less everything.using only between 2 and 6 channels for every track, the result is a stripped but surprisingly rich sound, that delineates spatial techno vignettes coated with the unmistakable charac- ter of the ms20 filters. even more interestingly, this restraint is not only applied gear-wise, but also from an emotional point of view. instead of involving my own feelings, i let the voice of the ms20 take care of it, says simon. all this makes redux an expression of techno in its purest form. after all, its a kind of music that has always gravitated around simplicity, austerity and, of course, the believe that the machines have their own soul.

after mathematics, bio rhythm and la beauté du négatif, american artist deviere is back on parisian label unlearn. lobster theremin artist and unlearn affiliate royer is on remix duty. water drums (a1), a deep and spacey cut reminds a joey-anderson-esque imagery for a moody and introspective club experience. strong yet subtle in the low end, this one is for the big sound systems. royer’s demi-monde remix comes up as a more housy interpretation, mixing dubby inspirations with lo-fi aesthetics. reminiscent of kyle hall’s early works on moods and grooves, rising (b1) is an upfront dancefloor track suited for peak time euphoria. speak into existence (b2) is probably the most accessible track of the ep, oscillating between acid-yet-warm feelings and solemn preacher-preachin’ vibes.

lelio luttazzi was a multifaceted artist, a jazz lover (whose favourite pianist was erroll garner) who left his mark as a pianist, musician, conductor and composer. during a career spanning more than 50 years, he established himself as a master of several disciplines such as music, literature and cinema. “i miei stati d’animo” (my feelings) is one of his greatest records, where you’ll find all his irony and wittiness, his versatility and priceless talent. a beautiful easy listening jazz work, completely instrumental and way ahead of the time it was released (1971).

phonica records is extremely proud to unveil the next release on its special editions imprint the stunning debut album vuduwave by niños indigo. niños indigo is the alias of audiovisual artist valeria hernandez. developed over the course of a month, the album was recorded in hernandezs home country of chile and recorded in a single week, resulting in a flowing, organic yet otherwordly listening experience. valeria explains: this record is a compilation of influences that have been inside me a long time, they keep coming back, afro drums, hindu instruments, candombe, psychedelia in south america. the rhythm of what surrounds me, the lake, the forest near where i live, the calm that surrounds it, the love of my friends and daughter. all of these feelings are what i like to put in my songs, a reminder to value the simple, to seize the resources that i have and to try and free myself of whats on my mind. originally released on digital and cassette label discos cetaceos in 2014, its a recording that truly deserves to be given a new lease of life on vinyl

this opus was recorded in a room transformed into a studio, where countless hours of work happened on an old computer, with trips back and forth to the grocery to buy liters of soda. in between soundtrack, jazz-funk and house, the beginnings of this ep find their roots in the encounter between lucien and dj gregory (point g), spiritual guide, who pushed into an introspective work, where the feelings were ultimately revealed sincerely. this ep is also the meeting of 4 musicians whove known each other for a long time and, together, form lucien & the kimono orchestra.
