liam blackburn s transformative night of visions lp as ancestral voices forged a bold new sonic identity for an influential figure on the electronic music scene. from his groundbreaking work as indigo and onto the success of akkord s hybrid electronic melting pot (with synkro), the quest for forward movement is intrinsic to everything liam produces. to further celebrate the night of visions lp release, we asked some of our favourite producers to reconstruct some of night of visions highlights in their own style. each remixer chose their own track from night of visions to work with. the first name on our remix list was swedish producer and northern electronics label head - abdulla rashim. choosing invocations , his remix focuses on the hypnotic power of the original, turning the tune into a golden loop with subtle kick drum stabs, sweeping percussion and a dangling tension that hangs through the entire 7.33 minutes. asc & sam kdc chose feathered serpent and using just touches of the original tune have masterfully built an all new backbone that demonstrates clearly the ability of the grey area sound to work at 2 different tempo s and weld together with straight techno.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

emotional response and golf channel come together to release a special collaboration between montezumas rache s christian pannenburg (record loft) and jan shulte (muller/ bufiman) and legendary krautrock guitarist dominik von senger (the phantom band / dunkelziffer). a meeting out of the love of vinyl, where panneburg hails von senger to source phantom band rarities and an idea of working together was born. following the success of the percussive heavy debut wu du wu on second circle, the return to the studio for christian and jan shulte and this resultant ep is a true coming together of cross-generational minds. unfolding across 3 songs of subtly and beauty, mood, structure and atmospherics form in a post-balearic meets psychedelic haze. lilting piano start before dub bass and dominik s refrain melts its way in rheinfahren. voids open, minds expand, felds walked, oceans crossed, seas parted, wind pushes against the face, rolling hills, cloudy skies, sun, sand, love, lost, found, deeper and deeper it goes in to your soul. the uber flow continues at a slower pace with tangerine (krauter mix) taking things down but carrying the interplay between artist s continues as if made for each other. guitar hooks in multiple layers, finger clicks, pots n pans vibes gently taking you from formentara to tisno, malibu, tulum or wherever your heart lies restful. finally, guten morgen bromio is the (bro)mance to end any affair. hip hop roots, jan s mouth-harp underlaying, dominik s licks and christian s dub fx laiden spector commandments shuffle together until group vocals bring them finally to completion. a wonderful ep bringing together 3 artists and 2 labels for the love of music

fifty first recordings was created in 1994 out of a small but very productive studio in london called state 51 using the down time and the very talented engineers who had been brought together for state 51 s existing clients. state 51 was the go to studio for the likes of x-press 2, sharp, amalgamation of soundz. the engineers we worked with included mark woolford, james brown, james reynolds & mark yardley. fifty first recordings soon found a name for itself and was very quickly at the forefront of the new generation of uk garage music. we produced and released music in the 90s, for over 7 years, with the likes of tuff jam etc. and later went to develop other imprints such as konnect / test press / unda vybe / spread love / tick etc., some in partnership with producers and managed artists.
