swedish artist ubx127 is back on figure with what might just be his most accomplished release to date. spanning an arc cross four diverse tracks, the story told is abstract yet full of imagination. gently pulsating crystalline opener woid carefully sets a vast open scene, covered in gushes of interplanetary winds. first contact is made on a2, its electro-esque drive and spiky synths hinting at its alien origins. a taste of their mighty technology is given on watch out below, booming with a propulsive punch and constantly swelling in intensity. relief comes in form of singularity, a beautiful, long-winding closer, on which soothing arps effortlessly outweigh their beaty counterparts. having already proven his mastery of the machines with three stellar eps for the label last year, this record further showcases ubx127s special talent of crafting tunes that are as ripe with drama as they are ready for the floor.

the dekmantel selectors compilation series is set to continue with a highly anticipated edition curated by joy orbison. first announced in 2015 when the selectors project was unveiled, the fourth compilation in the series finds the singular uk talent curating a sort of tribute to his home country and its rich musical history.

in 2012 bottin presented a mysterious neo-italo-wave band: cristalli liquidi. this album, finally, unveils the mystery: cristalli liquidi is not a band, not in the conventional sense of the word. it s entirely bottin s music, lyrics and vocals, with a little help from his friends. this long overdue lp not only introduces original works, but also breathes new life into remakes of obscure italian pop songs. sun-blushed synthwork is embraced by vocals steeped in romance, vocals en italiano no less. the many guises of the glitterball are unveiled, from the deep bass and smooth funk of 70s disco into the catchy hooks of the 80s and beyond to darker tones and lovelorn laments. across nine tracks the venetian takes you on a journey, as his homeland of italy is musically explored through past and present. cristalli liquidi is an album some five years in the making, five years at first glance. in reality, this lp is a narrative that spans almost thirty-five years. from the poets and songwriters who inspired bottin to the friendships and collaborations that made this project possible, this is an album forged through memories old and new, a heartfelt account of relationships between people (and synthesizers too!)

mr. k returns to the 12inch format for the latest in his series of edits for most excellent unlimited, making the most of the long-playing wax with two contrasting cuts. first up is ike strongs boogie land, an obscure side that was originally released in 1981 and saw plenty of action at the paradise garage. krivit s edit is inspired by larry levan s technique in running the tune, focusing as larry did on the late-song breakdown before dropping into a stripped-down rendition of the undulating main groove, a boogie bomb to be sure! don t let the name fool you the enigmatic boogie man orchestra, stars of the flip side, are all about disco. the instrumental lady, lady, lady first appeared in dj sets in the summer of 75, the prime breakout year for disco, making its way from chicago all the way to clubs on both coasts despite having no national distribution. pre-dating the introduction of the 12-inch single, the song never saw release on the larger format, until now. krivit s edit takes advantage of the extended playing time by easing into the philly-style orchestral groove and letting it breath for a dramatic, building dancefloor moment.

dj haus ever-expanding deviant house music empire continues to impress with another installment of house crime, this time committed by szch. the 12inch kicks off with the fast and freaky girl i neva which borders on juke levels of nagging sample chops, before the script gets crumpled up and tossed at the bin with the wonderfully scruffy rave deconstruction of peugeot 106 at sunrise (pingers mix). unconditional (edit) brings something a little smoother to the mix, although that underlying weirdness that comes with house crime releases is still lurking in the wings. ukljucen ti je blutut finishes the ep off in a rowdy yet reflective style long may the strange tale of house crime continue.

as the head of grounded theory and manhigh, henning baer has since 2009 presented his downcast, experimental interpretation of modern electronic music to wide critical acclaim, establishing his forceful presence on berlin’s scene with immaculate curatorial skills and equally imposing dj abilities. his discography so far, concentrated on adam x’s legendary sonic groove imprint and his own k209 and manhigh imprints, amongst others, keeps step with his formidable reputation and wide-ranging tastes, moving across the spectrum of hard-edged, aggressively modern techno. with ‘shatterproof’, his long-germinating debut album for manhigh, he offers for the first time his unified vision in extended format, a varied exploration into the outer limits of the genre. at its centre a work of dark minimalism, he sets and maintains the pensive tone on ambient pieces like ‘angel dust’, ‘all over’, and ‘mil-std 461’, which foreground the exploratory electronics that maintain their presence throughout. the corroded textures of the sounds, enveloped in decaying reverb, bring life to pieces like ‘never ending’ or ‘bliss’, which sit between rhythmic interludes and the stricter dancefloor material found on the remainder of the album. once he shifts into techno, he does it unremittingly, from the uptempo fury of ‘code buster’ and ‘burning chrome’, whose starkness only heighten the tension, to denser pieces like ‘drama sky’ or closer ‘vermillion red’, where the cavernous impacts of drum hits punch holes through beds of seesawing synthesizers. shatterproof like its title suggests, henning baer’s first album unifies and strengthens the work of an artist whose legacy is already assured.

this is the third volume of random numbers split series. a cross-section of the italian experimental scene in 5 volumes. each artist is assigned to one side of a c50 tape, in which express his music without compromises. volume 3 is entrusted to somec and von tesla. somec gives us 20 minutes of raw recordings of a mythical machine, a buchla 208, which stops its technology to the 70s. all recorded live with the aid of a computer. in less technical terms, napolis work can be summarized in a handful of eccentric hallucinations – pretentious recreations for quirky programmers – polished fiction. nwh2o is a long journey through interstellar landscapes and claustrophobic extraterrestrial rhythms, transmissions from other times and places. von tesla presents a more romantic vision of his world, divided into a triptych, touch / enter / flesh. dreaming representation of a meeting, where the romantic tones are obfuscated by a drop of lsd, which changes the colors, shapes and volumes. a slow movement toward the transformation of the body, an approach to transhumanism that mingles technology in the body, a genesis of tetzuo (the man of steel / tetzuo shima) of the years 10.

redstone press is a new label from the highlands of scotland born out of long nights on homegrown soundsystems pushing the uk scene, with a unique northern edge that comes from the freedom and isolation felt in that part of the world. red001 compromises of three eclectic bass-driven cuts from delphic producer pseudopolis. the a side pulls no punches, pointing you front left with arpeggiated synths on at last and artillery like percussion on tracer. we can all groove is a grittier but more subtle workout on the reverse.

sublime compilation of long-lost australian indie-pop, acoustic jangle and beat happenings gathered by melbourne-based collector and dj bayu and label head moopie. twelve tracks of singular vision spanning up and downbeat pop, post-punk and minimal synth rarities recorded between 1982 and now. australian twee pop royalty the cat’s miaow shares the stage with the cannanes and the particles, ya ya choral with sarah records own even as we speak. included is the previously unreleased dot, by mutant sounds cult band maestros and dipsos. full colour reverse-card sleeve with printed insert and lyrics sheet.

this album has been many years in the making. around 2005 we were gigging, playing hip hop breaks and supporting acts like krs-one and raekwon. we wrote a lot of our own material, but we never properly recorded it in a studio, we did however make lots of -one mic- recordings onto a mini-disk player. tom kept hold of all of these recordings and in 2011 send copies of everything to the rest of the band. a short list of 30 were chosen to record properly. a basic studio was booked, and recording began, initially it was pretty basic, just drums, bass & keys with guitars overdubbed the following day. with these foundation rhythm tracks tom went away and edited them, creating structure, extra layers and demo mixes. these demo mixes were used to send to mcs. it was decided to go with american mcs as the type of thing we listened to when we wrote a lot of our material was classic 90s hip hop. el da sensei & sadat x were the first to respond to our request, and soon features were flying through ever other week. we actually had enough material for 2 albums, but picked what we wanted to represent our first release and continued to develop the material, including adding session musicians for harps, brass, strings and cuts. we chose 4 tracks to create videos for and got the ball rolling with various video makers. the final year was spent mixing, sequencing and deciding on artwork. the title cinder hill is reference to where the band spent many afternoons practicing at john & joe’s parent’s house, their mum maggie passed away in 2016 and the album is dedicated to her for her endless support and love for the music.

after mukatsuku records summer hammond organ screamer from billy hawks (mukat 052) the label goes deep on an international funk tip. few years ago label manager nik played in france and the promoter pulled out a biosis now 45 that he never knew existed up till then and was generally thought to be a long album track only. an extensive search revealed nothing online including popsike/discogs/ebay except a tropical seller who d just bought a huge caribbean collection with the record included saying he d never seen it before either and he was keeping itâ&#128,¦failing to secure a copy themselves the label licensed it instead and created their own 45 edit which retains all the funk & soul of the elongated album version into a 7 inch friendly format. on the flipside and 1973 tumba safari from afro train get s a funky afrobeat re touch for peak time club play that would save you several hundred pounds on an original if you could actually find a copy !

recording and touring together on and off for several years now, sonic journeyman dj vadim and californian songwriter katrina blackstone unveil their long awaited full-length album ‘double sided’, released on bbe music. after providing a pair of stellar guest appearances on vadim’s 2014 dubcatcher album, katrina blackstone joined vad on tour and the duo have been steadily laying down tracks ever since. eschewing samples in favour of drum machines, guitars and a dizzying array of synths, vadim’s compositions on ‘double sided’ range from dubby downtempo grooves to upbeat afroboogie business. katrina’s crystal clear vocals, catchy melodies and highly relatable lyrics provide the perfect foil for vadim’s raw productions.

detroit producer norm talley shares his debut album, * norm-a-lise* on fxhe records. from a prolific dance floor career comes this debut full length album.

having started his career when disco was king, talley’s real life influences over his 25+ year career have included the originations of house through various iterations. his reference points as one of the original members of the west 6 mile detroit crew and his dedication to his analog only studio position him as one of the more dynamic detroit artists who’s finally taking the time to release a complete project for his long awaiting fans.

in the year 2053, two japanese musical explorers by the names of katsuyoshi and yousuke, travelled to the city of breda in the netherlands. whilst drinking beers in a park near the train station, they stumbled upon an old, partially decayed usb stick, hidden behind a trashcan. with usb technology being long absolete by then, they had no way of checking what was on there until returning back home to tokyo, where yousuke still had a macbook from around the turn of the century tucked away under his bed. after retreiving the data, the stick turned out to contain two 128kbps mp3s of unreleased coco bryce material. utilizing an extensive and painstaking radiocarbon dating procedure, they managed to pinpoint the production date to the spring of 2017. the tokyo natives then proceeded to reverse the mp3s back to their initial wav format via state of the art 2053 audio technology, and emailed them to richy at binary feedback, who subjected the files to a spot of mastering. richy immediately recognised the tunes from a series of youtube id request videos that had been doing the rounds for the previous 36 years. being the shrewd business man that he is, he decided to contact rick sanchez, who in turn teletransported the tracks back to 2017, dropping them off at an undisclosed dutch pressing plant. romanian visual artist raw parigi was contacted to sort out the labels, after which the records were pressed up and distributed to shops across the globe, hopefully making their way into the homes of hundreds of jungle and drumfunk enthusiasts worldwide. amen

new yorker anthony parasole provides three powerful, dancefloor productions for the third release onjoseph capriatis new label redimension. the exceptional opener ‘velocity wastes no time setting the theme of the record with its supremely-tight drum programming, jerky bassline and synth notes that spiral into space. ‘bang has similarly skipping percussion and a looped melody which reveals itself for a moment midway through the track before the pulse beats on. a killer, minimalist combination of drums, bass and the sample that the track takes its name from. finally, the restrained, warehouse feel and human touch to the rhythm of ‘hot zone again finds the berghain resident exploring the sweet spot between house and techno. his sonic voice between the two genres is founded on his wider influences, and the result carries a subtle funk, muscular beats and hint of nyc swagger. tried and tested by joseph capriati and sure to stay long in the bags of djs, parasoles fine productions have the hallmarks of an artist who knows exactly how to move a dancefloor himself. at once you both expect the unexpected and find that every progression or pad sweep arrives exactly when it was meant to.

“i’ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i’d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there’s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we’ve succeeded.
big shouts to the vocal collaborators - super hyped to work with stush on a tune, irah came through with the righteous fire, and tiffanie malvo absolutely bodied her beat - but ultimate biggups have to go to rider. this wasn’t a project where i made the beats and rider voiced them - for pretty much every tune, we worked and reworked the riddims together. we’re both stoked on the results, and it seems like people in the dance feel the same way.” - sam binga

next up on asking for trouble after selling out the album and re-pressing comes a four track remix ep for radioactive man’s luxury sky garden album. life-time friend of radioactive man and control tower partner dexorcist aka simon brown is first up to deliver his take on ‘sonic portal’ on the a side. his style has always been uncompromising and as a music lover and dj he s been a major influence on tenniswood’s style and taste for a long time. dexorcist turns in a detroit influenced banger which goes deep. ben pest then follows with his own take of the same track. a member of funk band pest, purveyor of wonky techno, music tech teacher and hardware enthusiast ben has also released on jerome hill’s don t’ label, i love acid and horror boogie to name a few. his take on ‘sonic portal’ is as genre bending and weighted as you’d expect. over on the b side pain struck stanley dumb remix ‘blast furnace’ - a fast and furious electro track which was released as a digital bonus to the album. they work it into a breakneck speed techno number. taste the amphetamine! completing the package biggabush (aka glyn bush) brings his dub influence to the mix. bush of rockers hi-fi connected with radioactive man during a mastering session asking to do the mix after hearing the record. the results are impressive and provide a welcome tempo and vibe change to the ep with its deep and dubby elements.

a kind of intimate scrapbook of the startling collaboration between the techno maestro and this long-standing musical collective based in bishkek, devoted to the roots music of kyrgyzstan. loose-leaved but balanced, lucid and intimate, it sets out from stunning a cappella and virtuosic komuz and kylak, mouth harp and traditional percussion: not field, but expert studio recordings, using marvellous vintage microphones, made over several days in berlin. further, a few of these are deftly treated by moritz, using reichian de-synced double-tracking, and discreet effects. also two ten-minute dubs: a deadly, signature berlin steppers, plus its version and an echoing, mystical drum session, recorded live on stage in bishkek. and a side-long, dream-like summation: the locomotive, oceanic, clangorous, dread facets. ravishing, rooted, searching music, beautifully presented.

we ve been closely watching the rise of a sagittariun ever since he first popped up with his consistently excellent elastic dreams label back in 2011. what started out as an anonymous project has since been revealed as the handiwork of nick harris, a long time champion of the bristol house and techno scene since before most of us were even hitting the dance. his music has been flying out with a no nonsense approach self-released, minimal promo, just cracking club-ready 12inches that tap into the fierce-but-fun spirit of detroit techno and albums loaded with smokers delights to appease his west country roots.

the ken boothe masterpiece from 1978 gets the long overdue remastered re-issue. -got to get away- was produced by phil pratt, features additional deejay vocals by jah walton (aka joseph cotton) and has extensive sleeve notes. packaged in the original sleeve design by anthony nero it is now available for the first time on cd and the high collectable lp-vinyl is here in a great 180 gram edition with leaflet including credits and linernotes.

eye o is the convergence of a few bay area stalwarts—kevin woodruff, formerly of tussle, and jason schwartz - and “deux o & debut” is their first studio-recorded public offering. the five-track, fifty-minute- long lp is a weaving journey through a pastiche of styles that’re all nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters of one another. kraut-rooted motorik drums reconfigure into more complicated math-y patterns, razor-sharp dance-punk guitars stretch out and dissolve into dubby post-rock atmospherics, synth loops you’d more commonly find in house tracks get grafted onto fuzzy psychedelic breakdowns, hard rock licks lock into chunky industrial grooves.
less for dancefloor destruction and more for trippy weekenders, the instrumental record manages to both be a focused, cerebral, conceptual hunk of fat to chew on and a spaced-out, intuitive ride through the cosmos. for use during those off-kilter small hours of the night just as much as it is vision quests and introspective weekends. it’s rare that an outpouring of so much can feel so simple and sublime.

airhead has put out some great music this year. kicking off with the radiophonic ice of kazzt for mumdance s different circles and just recently the low slung cristobal on ps records his production chops get bolder by the minute. it s no surprise seeing as he spent much of the previous year producing key tracks for the incredible -1-800 dinosaur presents trim- album alongside bullion and boothroyd as well as regularly touring and writing with long-time musical partner james blake. back with another 12- on hemlock, his first since 2014 s rolling october / macondo this time the sound is dustier, warmer, but packing twice the punch all the while retaining his signature understated wild-man groove. both tracks are capable on dancefloor whilst richly layered, packed with detail and arranged for maximum connectivity with contemporary beat styles such as house, techno and breaks. what happened to ricky martin? shaded is the twisted latin stepper you didn t know you needed, so much, right now. polished drums dug into a tweaky sci-fi soundbed make way for the curveball drop not every dj will be able to style out but those brave few that do will reap the reward. captain, we have an incoming transmission. by now, antipolo will be on the long-range scanners of a several fleets in this sector and is finally ready for replication and deployment. beaming out to the far reaches of the dancefloor we have bass, breakbeats and synth hooks but not as we know it together forming an advanced composite bond of extreme strength and malleability.

to celebrate argot s fifth year of releases, we re launching a series of compilations boldly entitled american dance music. argot s first ever various artists compilation continues its mission of showcasing homegrown talents, assembling a cast of familiar faces and welcome compatriots for the inaugural edition. american dance music vol. 1 features the long anticipated return of the black madonna, who debuts her new collaborative project with rupert murray, throwing shapes. you ll recognize argot stalwarts savile, olin, todd osborn, maxine & cleo, and hippie priest on the tracklist. we ve also invited friends noncompliant and alex falk to the fold. with future volumes we aspire to look even further afield and cast the spotlight on many diverse talents who make up american dance music. much of american dance music vol 1. is aimed squarely at the dance floor, whether it s todd osborn s smooth and playful romp, 80s are here (part 2), or noncompliant s acid tweaked ode to girls everywhere, femslash. throwing shapes comes bursting from the gates with the raving stomp of heatstroke, channeling midwest raves as much as the thomas bangalter tunes inspired by them. savile offers the growling stepper, reality is a sound (share power mix), while alex falks vines provides an effervescent vocal moment. olin and maxine & cleo double down on hypnotic motifs: the former s 2d rhythm whips snare riffs off the walls of a late night jam, the latters imagine yrself catches dancers in a lockstep house groove with stimulating vocals as its key. the compilation concludes on hippie priests dream machine, whose melancholic melodies and cinematic scale twiddle heartstrings with a deft hand.

echoes_ is welcoming the young and talented akatana for their second release. the berlin-based french artist his taking us on a tripping 14min long journey of extended pad textures and strings with just the right amount of grooving basslines.
on the b-side we hear hubble decomposing and re-arranging the original track in a way only he could do it. changing it into a dramatic adventure through acoustic drums and percussions.
