for the third installment of the ftp series, the tracks twist into darker genre territories. the compilation opens with psygnosis, a nine minute acidic techno stormer beaming from the pineal gland of the reclusive new zealand artist matthew brown. the track starts out with a simple hook, building intensity towards a crescendo of raining acid lines and 808 hi hats which resemble unsheathing swords, twisting form into hypnotizing insanity. on the b side, draveng unleashes some comic mischief with isogamous skoliosapien, a frantic rave tune bursting out of the seams with jazzy drum hits and frantic chord stabs. it would be a good soundtrack for phantasms to dance to in a haunted place. closing out the ep is the propulsive electro missile nonstop, a track that whips into the air and spins like a jet powered boomerang. it is is the first release from the finnish cyber-phreek sansibar. expect more to come from him in the very near future

indelible craters on the techno lp landscape: correspondant s annual compilation dispatches have become calendar essentials for all connoisseurs of the barbed, darker, leftfield side of the dancefloor. this summer they hit correspondent compilation 5 with another future-bound 15 track opus from their label family and friends. but first come the vinyl samplers... this inaugural sampler is turbo-charged by some of the label s newest friends as khidja, marvin & guy and kempes all make their correspondant compilation debuts alongside established affiliate jonathan kusuma. each artist drawing out some deliciously mystic sci-fi aesthetics to the collection, it s a remarkable introduction to what is arguably one of the jennifer cardini s label s most comprehensive and explorative various artist albums to date.

following releases on detroit underground, nachtstrom schallplatten, planet rhythm and blueprint records, gotshell releases his first ep on atrophic society. the colombian aficionado has been making waves across the world for his uncompromising take on the darker side of techno. his new ep ‘quarkcima’ is no different, with a thick slice of bass-heavy machine music made for late night body moving. ‘quarkcima’ follows a bleepy lead with layers of bass, building to a satisfying and tasteful crescendo, which steers clear of the tropes and uses frequencies to their fullest. it invokes a dark and foreboding atmosphere like a creeping black fog. first on remix duty is xhin, who takes the bleepy synth lead and twists it into a heavy-but-funky robotic jam, stark and cold on the surface but with plenty of heat underneath. jeff derringer takes the reins for the second remix, wielding the original parts masterfully into a dense, bassline-driven triplet groove that takes the vibe up a few notches. finally, label head vohkinne adds punch and percussion to his charged and clanging remix, which rounds out a fierce package in style. ‘quarkcima’ is four cuts of essential techno that will never leave your crate.

the next ep on just this comes from octual, an established figure on the dutch underground techno circuit. his 3rd release to date is an exploration into melody and beat composition – a journey through uncharted territory. “jupiter’s moon” presents a fleeting view of different landscapes - claps and hi-hats depict the lights and shadows of a sublunary word. “untold places” reaches an otherworldly place where rhythm and metre counteract each other and obscure sounds sway us in and out of reality. amsterdam based electronic pioneer sterac provides two remixes, analysing and repurposing the molecular details of octual’s productions. his first rework of ‘jupiter’s moon’ provides a stunning and heartfelt view, exploring the intersection of each artist’s approach. for the dub version he reveals a darker sentiment, creating a dancefloor oriented secret weapon.

occassional duo pjotr g & dubiosity have become household prruk names within short time. a couple of months after the well received “a man is no island” ep a new submission to the ever extended prrukblk catalog was provided in the form of “savant”, a 4 track spanning work of staggering techno with the significant filmic elements that pjotr g and dubiosity cleverly incorporate into their hazy works of techno. whereas the a side is based on these elements, on the b side darker elements are introduced. “savant” is a ferm but uplifting techno record.

musically and emotionally, superpitcher’s third full-length studio album, the golden ravedays is a one sound autobiography that exhibits the skill, feeling and style that the artist has honed over a period of twenty years, musically, and forty-plus-years, emotionally.

the golden ravedays is an epic album of 24 tracks that was released in january 2017 and is stretching over 12 respective chapter albums during a one-year period. the sixth piece of the golden ravedays puzzle will be released on hippie dance in june 2017.

number 6 of the series introduces two further tracks of the sound adventure that superpitcher is taking us on this year. side a features protest song. if music is a way of transporting us to other places, protest song takes us to a desolate, scary and loveless environment, a burnt-down, burnt-out place where the flesh of its former inhabitants is smouldering, void of goodwill and kindness in a cloud of toxic and greedy smoke. it’s all kafka and orwell and suffering - the most twisted and eerie track so far in the golden ravedays saga. what is undeniably clear is an acute sense of regret and loss - a warning that it could have been avoided, had we only listened to our hearts and protested. in the same vein on side b we hear powerful resistance. produced after the paris attacks of 2015 superpitcher outdid himself with this strong message of resistance. where protest song paints a picture of under-worldly doom, resistance’s techno beat and insistent refrain sweeps us to the surface of the muck of hatred and intolerance we’ve politically been dumped in. a voice that seems like a trapped animal is calling out to us. what is it trying to say? is it crying out for help? is that animal all of us? resistance represents hope and encouragement and could be the perfect marching track to any demonstration against negative forces. much needed in this age of bigotry where it seems like time has leaped backwards to a darker side of history. as for the dancefloor – resistance is irresistible!

cadenzas head honcho luciano teams with house music legend david morales up for esperanza a long awaited release that will fire up the summertime. david and luciano composed the track together but then each one refined his own personal mix. lucianos flow latino mix is a long tribalistic ground moving crescendo with a sub-frequency dense kick and sparkling nuyorican flavoured percussions. the hand drums ensemble ride a magnetic bass provoking a state of hypermnesia slowly reaching a climax of celestial chords. this subtle spectral progression finally breaks down a feeling of positive trust and spiritual healing. david morales red zone mix is a lengthy dramatic ascension with a darker feeling. stretched textures are the background of a constellation of scattered percussions, over which fast paced hi-hats subliminally introduce evocative strings and arpeggios, as they were coming out, at last, as the hope from the pandoras box.

mathew jonson’s “decompression” was first released on minus in 2004. to celebrate 13 years since it’s release mathew has commissioned 11 artists to remix this classic split over 4 releases. the first ep of the series features remixes from dbridge, konrad black and nathan jonson, each artists contribution provides a fresh approach to a package fuelled by the influence of drum & bass. dbridge steps up for two remixes, the first is warped and deconstructed, the second a high energy drum & bass belter. konrad black slows things down with a darker groove whilst nathan jonson’s ‘rewind to 96’ utilises rave tropes and chopped vocal samples. the package is a magnificent addition to the legacy of ‘decompression’ and coming next will be remixes from seth troxler, deadbeat, mike shannon and natalia escobar. mathew jonson’s “decompression” was first released on minus in 2004. this is the first release on mathew jonson’s new label entitled “freedom engine” mastered at scape mastering

astray is the sublabel of away, berlin. away, berlin’s party series and the eponymous vinyl label celebrate the launch of its sublabel astray with the road force ep by discrete circuit. while away with previous contributions from joe claussell, mr. ties, and move d leans more to the housier side of things, astray will take a different path by taking some darker, techno-centered steps. following the idea only to release productions by both label founders, discrete circuit and h4l, as well as unique collaborations which either of them will form with outside artists, astrays second ep will premiere the joint studio work of discrete circuit and dj/producer blind observatory.

conrad van orton debuts on attic music for the 15th installment of label. “hypersomnia” is a collection of haunting techno tracks that sit on the darker side of the genre’s spectrum without loosing it’s dance floor appeal.
the 4 track spanning record opens up with the title track “hypersomnia” though techno sounds that revolve around a train-like whistle that repeats throughout the track’s poignantbuild. “green eyes” is an intrusive piece of work that closes down the a-side with it’s intense synth works. on the b side we find “iteration”. this growling piece of music has an almost live sounding quality to it. “ending point” is the toughest piece of work of the record which revolves around a fierce bass sound and a potent drum work.

techno stars collide as truncate and slam come together for the latest gynoid release “drum trax”. side a sees truncate return on the label with 2 original pieces in model 2 and the title track, “drum trax”. both dipped in that truncate signature floor driven minimalist funk and backed with tough percussion for drive. these are surefire dj faves waiting to happen. the flip side sees slam remix “model 2”, not once but twice. the slam remix charts darker and brooding territory, taking you deep into the rabbit hole. then the tenebris dub remix still maintains that mood, but shifts through the energy gears to develop into a dance floor bomb.

fever am comes from a berlin connection between a pair of artists with roots on either side of the mediterranean sea and on both sides of the atlantic. label founders mor elian and rhyw (one half of cassegrain) share many musical reference points reaching back to early childhood right up to the present including the deeper, darker reaches of electronic music. the label is the pair’s rawest and truest realisation of these influences.
the first ep will be from elian, a sublime 4 tracker that has matured after a winter in the studio and is now ready for club play - from heating up peak time dance floors to trippier after hours moments. sprinkling her trademark stripped back sound with electro and breakbeats the release sets out the label’s stall to release vibrant, challenging dance floor music.

emerging from what sounds like the unknown depths of outer space, new artist icore drops a debut ep on osiris music uk lled with ve exercises in hypnotic, polyrhythmic tension. the a-side’s two tracks ’sigil’ and ‘status field’ feel like two parts of a whole, each establishing a minimal, kick-heavy march in 6/8 that would perfectly ll the cavernous hull of an abandoned mining vessel, lurching through empty parts of the galaxy to the sound of ominous drones and malfunctioning, high-end bleeps. the b-side is more cinematic in its scope, with opener ‘substance from shadow’ summoning a distinctly b-movie vibe in its melody, before both ‘claimed by night’ and ‘axiom’ retreat into darker, more ambient territory, the former thick in sub- bass kicks, the latter ramping up the dread with unnerving repetition.

uncertainty. no set route. destination unknown. younger than me know it s the journey that counts, and they premiere with quite the musical journeyman. the dulcet tones of none other than the don, fred ventura, accompany the title piece, a grooving melody ticks over against clean beats. san proper kick up some dust, adding some grit and soul to the original. the flip takes on a darker aspect. the giallo flavoured -not for all- looms and lurks before the dream woven depths of -don demorder-.

nice price deal !!! titanium is back with a brandnew release! titan103 is a great ep from austrians producer christopher groove who has his first solo release on philipp straubs label titanium. this ep already had a great impact on the market as felix da housecat licenced maximal mnml for his recent global underground compilation milan which was a great success wordwide. maximal mnml is a deep techno tune with soft percussions and a great bassline that makes everybody move. the second track b.o.w. is a real techno bomb with a huge break and succeeded on many dancefloors around the globe, not only due to heavy support from carl cox. to complete the ep philipp straub asked his friend danilo vigorito for a remix and danilo delivered one of his rare and beloved tunes. danilo, who is one of the main protegees of italian techno, formed maximal mnml into a little bit darker structure with a unique atmosphere. all in all a great ep!

though quality techno is regularly associated with the colder climates of berlin and detroit, the recent developments happening on the iberian peninsula have been hard to ignore. one of the region’s more interesting and consistent producers in this decade has been maceo plex, owner of the ellum audio label. armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of signature club sounds, and with an ability to investigate ‘darker’ side of modern life (a tendency that can be heard especially well on past plex-produced tracks like “conjure balearia”), plex has located the “goldilocks zone” between funk liberation and mechanical control. mastering this balancing act is a skill that separates the best producers from the legions of also-rans: it shines through in his back catalog and is back in full force for his new “tesseract” ep on ellum.

manchester original sameed comes through on gamm with two tasty noodle nuggets based on his food experiences from vietnam where he currently resides. his simple yet effective approach is best described as sample-friendly underground dance music with influences of disco, soul and jazz. on his gamm debut the first noodle dish comes with a heavy disco and jazz-funk feel (bun) that together with some gritty vocals gives us a peak time jam to die for. for desert, sameed delivers chao which is way darker and chops up some deep jazz samples with some 4/4 rhythms. again, simple but oh so effective
