the hidden meaning of number 13 is change, the death of something and its rebirth. this is the idea behind gabriel dor & bordoys new album 13, which is meant to be a turning point on their career. influenced by old school techno but also by modern sounds, after 6 years of production partnership, theyve decided to release their first entirely unpublished lp. the album, made out of 13 cuts, starts with a dark intro that paves the way into a forceful kind of techno, followed by vintage sounds with gloomy touches and sometimes even emotional ones. they have used many instruments and samples discovered along the way on this composition process, plus lots of others found in the previous years. the sounds put together on this album have been carefully picked to preserve their uniqueness, while trying to walk on a different path.

“ode to eskapism” is dedicated to all of those that use techno as a way in to escapism. to those that use techno as a mental diversion from the perceived unpleasant, boring, arduous, scary, or banal aspects of daily life. those that cannot subsist on the scanty satisfaction they can extort from reality alone. those that feel the need to dissociate from reality in order to experience it. to all of those that emerges recreated, stronger and full of life after a weekend escape into techno. the label bond is the brainchild of swedish techno dj and producer petter b. the concept of the label is “music by djs for djs”. the label focuses on releasing tracks that enable the dj, rather than the producer, to be creative. it is based on that special bond which is created every time a dj combines tracks, loops and sounds live into something new and unique.

not too long ago a jiffy bag arrived at parkwest hq. in it was a scratched tdk case with a sa-x tape containing a musical message from years past, simply marked the tape i lost! we sat and listened, able to pinpoint influence and reference but yet hearing something totally new. that this tape surfaced and made it across the years and the miles to us was fortunate. when the synth part came through clear on a later version on the tape, allowing us to remix then it became destiny. emotion, melody and rhythm will always be timeless and these tracks, selected from that tape, are as relevant today as they ever were.

over the course of four albums, manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader matthew halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the uk music scene as one of it s brightest talents. his languid, soulful music has won friends from jamie cullum and gilles peterson to jazz fm and mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. his label gondwana records is home to gogo penguin and his own albums have found halsall exploring the modal jazz of john and alice coltrane, paying tribute to the hard bop of the late ’50s and early ’60s or most recently on fletcher moss park drawing on eastern influences in his most personal statement yet. his latest album when the world was one is something of a companion piece to fletcher moss park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on halsall’s love of spiritual jazz and eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in japan. beautifully recorded at hasall’s favourite studio, 80 hertz in manchester, and engineered by brendan williams and george atkins it features the recording debut of halsall’s large ensemble, the gondwana orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and eastern scales to create a global palate for halsall’s life-affirming sounds.

2016 is shaping to be a fantastic year for rebirth records, the 10th year anniversary and the 100th release…to celebrate this special date the label owner shield and his right arm robytek get in the studio to collaborate with two of the most innovative figures of the end of 70s / early 80s. the a side is the the pyramids with isabelle antena, french singer and songwriter, founding member of electro-samba pioneers antena. in the 1990s she also led another group, the powaga sisters, for three albums between until 2004. alongside these projects she maintained a solo music career, selling over a million albums and earning musical acclaim across the globe. from camino del sol (1982) to bossa super nova (2010), her cool latin, bossa, jazz and funk vibes have delighted ears and feet worldwide. the pyramids is something really special, a cosmic and balearic song with a timeless meaning, with the collaboration of martin ditcham (sade s percussionist) for the drum and paolo mantini, a real italian talent, for the bass and chords. the aa side is now, a collaboration with salvatore principato (sal p.) and dennis young, known as the vocalist and marimba/percussionist of (for the legendary early 80 s nyc band liquid liquid) seminal nyc minimalist-funk band liquid liquid. the experimental sounding band emerged from new york city s vibrant downtown scene in 1981, developing their own unique sound which they called big beat, a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. the group s successes included club hits such as cavern (sampled by grandmaster flash in the making of white lines), bellhead and optimo in addition to sold-out concerts worldwide. sal p and dennis still explore today new ways of writing & performing music. now is the experimental way to combine the live drums played by snacks (the berlin based duo rene corbett & aljoscha babel), with the electronic world and the unique musical textures from sal p and dennis young.

this compilation should enrich everybody’s soul with a mix of something for everyone who likes or wants to explore the variety of early soul tracks which are finding new favour on today’s uk soul scene. from the lesser known tracks from big name artists like aretha franklin, otis redding, gladys knight and the drifters, to established hits from the valentinos, sam cooke, steve alaimo, chuck jackson and timi yuro.

after a five year absence the illusive cottam label returns. since the original series paul has travelled the world djing, released on labels such as aus & versatile and started his own imprint ruff draft for his own original productions and tracks from other producers. currently taking a break from djing & concentrating on production it felt like the right time to reactivate the label that started it all with some new under-the-counter specials. first up we have ‘mixing tool’, a heavy beat and percussion setting the dark & foreboding tone, the unease increasing like something is creeping up behind you until the distant war cries reveal themselves - a deep track that is much more than the title suggests. next up, the long awaited vinyl release for the cottam re-wiring of a classic film title track, mixing the best elements of the originals synth score with a club ready beat and acid that adds to the original - this is one of the finest carpenter reworks you ll hear.

london based punk duo black volume are not easy to classify. their delirious industrial post punk sounds at times like proto house and at times becomes some sort of mutant electro. their b series sound is made of a conglomerate of filthy percussions, unexpected samples and something with the appearance of melody, with a weirdly addictive result. black rubber is james brown wearing black leather at 40ºc (in the shade) while suffering a mental breakdown. excentric melodies sliding down rhythmic dislexia. negative return blooms from an improvised beat with no traceable sequence, on top of which we find rubbery synth lines, creamy interferences and mysterious sampling, everything sounds like melting from old vhs footage with the future we enter a romantic dystopia. sensual and passionate but equally crunchy, it rises up through cheap calculator arpeggios, pitched vocals and obsessive bass lines. streetfight evoques a desolate landscape, devastated and radioactive. distant echoes from an extinguished human race that left behind only majestic rusty ruins.

we are really proud and honored to present espectrum, a year-long effort to put together a compilation of the best dub techno. the idea was simple, but ambitious: ask some of our favorite artists for one track to epitomize dub techno—the style of music we’ve loved and continued to develop since our birth as producers and a label. with a very precise idea of what we wanted to collect, the compilation was carefully built with hypnotic, obscure, dense, and magical sounds with an eternal hook. these are the kind of tracks that will never lose their appeal, because they go above and beyond labels, styles, and trends, resisting the passage of time. after the first tracks starting coming in, the idea grew more and more special, and the concept even stronger. we knew we were onto something really big. and, finally, here it is.

british producer reformed society is on a steadfast mission to dig deeper by going against the grain, standing up to the status quo and daring to do something different. a self proclaimed goal that is easily noticeable in his first release for “made of concrete”, wherein he reveals three original tracks and a remix by gathaspar, one of the label’s regulars. kicking things off with “high tension”, a high strung stripped back piece with an aerial feel, the artist builds up the entire mood of the ep from scratch. a clear-cut, steady groove whose versatility makes it relevant as an intro, outro or interlude. gathaspar’s rausch remix is a sub-bassy reinterpretation of the initial piece, filled with contorted whirs and whizzes that give the track a sub- aquatic feel. on “volgende halte”, the opening vocal sample shifts from a seemingly conventional soundbite to a recurringly haunting snippet that remains etched into the listener’s brain. rhythmical rolling pads galvanize the groove, making for an eerie yet relaxed overall vibe. movement inducing from the get go, final offering “orbiting jupiter” centers around wavering bass leads, while playing on a blend of spacious synths and timbered percussion patterns.

bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dancefloor tracks he doesnt seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrate very well. his music is at times cinematic and theres a story behind each track. bjarkis music always has something to do with him personally, but hed rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets

as the climate cools down in australia, temperatures are rising in europe and one of italys finest selectors has taken charge of people must jams eighth record. deja vu is a ep that has been a long time in the making. the result, we hope you will agree has been worth the wait. the title track kicks the ep off with a killer funk groove that riccio works into something we think mark e would be happy with. dyson jam is an original cut that channels some of his inner moodymann vibes - heads down, lights down, fader up... for the b side we asked the incredible payfone (who has been racking up a solid string of releases on golf channel) to remix dyson jam and he has created a perfect contrasting remix to the rest of the tracks of the ep. a deep journey that takes the original into sub-dawn territory. 4am vibes! the final cut of the ep mystical stretcher, is a late night jazzy funk number. again a little mahogani inspired...

something special from camp critical as two of electronic music’s leading lights lock horns for a vs battle of epic proportions. taking the jungle fleck of “mind & spirit” from sam’s “wasted days” lp of last year and one of breakage’s most memorable cuts from way back when (2005), the results are as you’d expect from these two. utterly essential listening.

those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern balearica should know all about layne fox, a san francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 thieves. the bay area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on rong music and leng, who released their expansive debut album the sky is yours back in 2014. now, fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on magic feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005 s move me under the tuffy alias. its something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy italo-disco and horizontal pop.

meshing together brass blasts with bumping house beats and techno dirge, 14 drops is an inspiring experiment in joining together the organic and the synthetic. it s easy to imagine -14 drops uniting a crowd with numinosity: its spiralling dance rhythms, thick swabs of sub, guitar twangs, and warped vocals congealing into something that s completely its own

this is the long-overdue debut album by hawaiian born soul singer jesse morgan, member of the legendary mopptopps. the album was scheduled for release in 1977 but remained in the can for almost 40 years. ten modern soul masterpieces on one album - something you rarely find!

novoline makes music with equipment that was manufactured in 1988 and 1989, controlled via midi by two atari sts. as a sequencer he is using an algorithmic composition program that is 25 years old. with this program he creates sequences that he modulates live by shifting numbers and settings while recording. the process is improvised and contains a good portion of randomly generated melodies and drums, carefully selected and combined by novoline. the result sounds a little like something between a dark 80’s sci-fi soundtrack and an endless marching new beat extended version.

whiskey disco continues to explore the boundaries blurring the lines between original and edit, disco and oddity. wd47 is helmed by dutchman, olivier boogie, an artist known for strengths across the spectrum, in previous releases, we ve seen his editing on display, no goodbye is a fine balance between original synthesis and editing panache. thoma cher is a newcomer to the edit scene, but has been heavily involved in a disco and house renaissance occurring in shanghai over the last few years. his club chops have honed an acute ear, we love what we re hearing from him and can t wait for more. the b-side is everything a b-side should be: weird. label staple, alkalino guides us along a cosmic journey of boogie-down grooves. arps, baby. we love em. sf crew, jp soul & anthony mansfield have been attracting serious attention of late between outings on roam recordings and sightings at the famous burning man camp, disco knights. to say they are ravelords is an understatement. their pedigree is on full display in warlord, equal parts arp energy and huge (huge) lead, the right balance of fun and cheese.

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

tommy garofalo aka turbojazz returns to local talk after remixing corrado bucci back in 2015. a producer with great versatility that started djing and producing music during the 90 s, heavily inspiried by hip hop. something that would bring him to explore the whole black music culture, from dance floor jazz to rare funk and disco, passing through all things soulful and deep. take all of the above & stir it in a musical pot and you get the unbreakable ep , the debut 12- on local talk from turbojazz. the ep kicks of with please u which features david blank on vocals. a retro-futuristic track with warm chords draping themselves over snappy snares & melodies. on the flip, unicorn rising bounces along with the sort of finesse you d expect from a producer like recloose, it s flavoured with quirky breaks and warm fuzz bass & analogue-sounding keys. last but not least we ve got evm128 on remix duties, a feel-good slice of broken beat anyone ? it s a blinder ladies and gentlemen.

francesco tristano really needs no introduction lately, his music speaks volumes and his reputation precedes him with that said we are happy to share place on lafayette with you once again, this time including some stunning remixes. the first one is a collaboration between two highly respected artists: thomas gandey and radio slave. the two take the track further into tech-house territory with the percussion driving while multiple layers begin the fall into one another, achieving a beautifully elegant and jazzy end result. gutis vision is much deeper, with hints of dub here and there as the artists drives the tension up and creates a stunning groove. the final remix come from tuff city kids, who are known for their sometimes unconventional approach to making music, and in this case, it works. they channel a raw vibe and create something that is quite possibly the furthest thing from the original in terms of percussion. the pianos keep the thread strong, and the rhythm takes care of the rest.

killer ep of techno-infused electronic excursions from the on-point dark arts imprint. across its 6 tracks we find dark dancefloor gear in the form of drama and far corner, with abstract science touching upon the classic uk-techno blueprint to create something deep, incredibly soulful and a little bit special. the deadly beneath is a moody, spacious broken-beat groove, and the ep is bookended by something more and orbit:28, two cinematic cuts of atmospheric electronica. technofuturism for the heads recommended.

wah wah 45s return to the 12- format to bring you three incredible re-works from french disco don the reflex, for our very own legendary canadian/haitian keyboard wiz henri-pierre noel. funky spider dance is a percussion heavy bomb filled to the brim with henri s soaring piano licks and infectious female vocal hooks. the reflex has taken what was already a sure-fire club favourite, and created something of a dance floor destroyer. his rework of a fifth of beethoven takes its time to build into another heavy hitter. as the beats make way for henri s deft keyboard flourishes, the recognition of this cover of the walter murphy classic (taken from the saturday night fever soundtrack) begins to dawn - and as it does, it s clear that once again the dream team of hpn and the reflex have worked their magic! last, but certainly not least, the reflex s revision of back home..., sweet home is a modern island funk masterpiece with organ and tropical guitar riffs making way for sunny brass stabs all underpinned by foot friendly beats. the original versions of funky spider dance and back home..., sweet home can be found on henri s one more step lp, and his take of a fifth of beethoven was recently available on 7-inches of wax - all on wah wah 45s of course. the reflex revisions all appear here together on vinyl, in fact anywhere, for the very first time!

if everything suddenly changed – what would that be like?
qnete’s ep is not the question and not the answer. it’s in a hiatus between hopes and fears, still maintaining an eager energy. within a short period of time all tracks were recorded straight to tape, raw and improvised. they remember the sun bath before the storm, when you feel that something is about to roll over you. they express the urge and need to sometimes just jump into the cold water to face what’s coming next. they linger in the nervous energy when you’re lost and don’t know what to expect. but they also talk about the hope of finding a safe place.

romanias snejl black teams up with qindek for its 4th release. what we get are 3 tracks, carefully sculpted, ultra-pure visions of techno. each is thoroughly uncluttered, and given just enough color to be compelling. simple kick drum, undulating sounds that provide something distantly related to melody, and very subtle backdrops that pair a soothing hiss and quiet drones. nothing is superfluous, everything is essential.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.
