emotional especial gathers pace with an eighth release from richard sen, a man whose cultured touch has had a hand in various strands of the uk underground for the past two decades. graffiti artist, graphic designer, music curator, dj and producer are all vocations richard sen has done at one point or another. here he goes solo with the ghost train ep, a dark and brooding release of old school meets new school house jack that takes its cues from 80s new york, italian house and the nascent uk acid house that sen himself documented with aplomb on a 2012 compilation for strut. naggingly familiar samples and a low slung box jam groove drive the spectral title cut forward, whilst sens mastery of delay is shown with aplomb on the dub version that closes out the record. nestled in between is the highlight however in *meteor shower* where discoid basslines merge with psychedelically charged keys and hollowed out steppers percussion.

i light another cigarette in the tittery the sparrow has landed. we have returned from our excursion to the modern and would like to share what we brought with you: some showtunes and a twelve tone row. the show, as it turns out to be, is our very own. we started out writing new material to perform on stage, after we had found out it was great fun to refrain our instrumentation to vocals, piano and bad acting. originally very attracted to the- as our label told us- very clandestine idea of releasing three 12inches with very limited playability for djs, we agreed not to ruin our dial friends and work on an album instead.
back in print on vinyl and for the first time on drag city cds, damon & naomi with ghost is a sweet meeting of mind and soul featuring ghosts masaki batoh and michio kurihara in full collaboration with the titular hero and heroine. everybody brings their heaviest and lightest sounds and the album a pre freak-folk freaky folk excursion now meets us on the other side, all charms intact.

knowing looks kicked off 2011 for wncl recordings with with his much loved, hard stepping abandoned skip, backed with the acclaimed symphonic masterpiece that was last kiss at the plains hotel. jason hopfner is back again to neatly tie up a busy year at wncl hq, unveilling the classically constructed epic listen to my 45 - described by ben ufo as >lovely. gorgeous. slick. buff etc< and who are we to disagree. just do what it says on the tin, then flip over for ghost baby - yet another fine example from hopfners rich and varied production cannon, melding super cool minimalism with party breaks. merry christmas from the cassette library!
after his critically acclaimed album on ghost sounds, a.p. now delivers this beautiful limited edition heavyweight picture disc release, containing his...
in its original form, holy ghost!s debut album cut >hold my breath< is, pure and simple, great dancefloor electronic pop, in the hands of shadowy duo tiger & woods, the song has been totally reshaped and refracted through 80s r&b radio. they have slowed the pace and inserted synth-funk hot flashes that recall prince and, no kidding, the time, and jimmy jam & terry lewis to create a mood that fits comfortably (and pleasurably) within their future boogie m.o. cosmic kids ron poznansky and dan terndrup have taken the track in a more tensely dramatic direction. it might be the vaguely darkened synthline upon which much of that track sits that lends itself to its more intense feel here, and gives it such a pleasant nocturnal feel. finally, theres falty dls re-envisioning, which goes down awfully smooth for a track so full of the big, thick, bumping bass beats. its an aural pleasure to find yourself dreamily lost in the brooklyn, new york producer/djs halls of reverberating sound.
there are certain songs that are so very good, the only singular word that accurately describes them is satisfying. >wait & see< is one of those: an aural pleasure that scratches an itch and hits the spot so precisely, it almost feels like self-denial not to listen on repeat. on holy ghost!s latest ep, the absurdly catchy single from their self-titled 2011 debut gets a makeover from three of dance musics titans: cfcf, kris menace and richard x. and while this batch of remixes finds the artists behind each track steering in new directions, each finds a way to capitalize on the irresistible danceability of the original.
just in case someone might have forgotten: stil vor talent is based in berlin. and this ep by sascha braemer, one part of heinrich & hirtenfellner, proves just that. braemer, whos just been at the top of everybodys dj charts with his funk-laden minimal soul piece >mamba drums< on kindisch records, has donated three tracks to oliver koletzkis imprint that mirror what this city is best know for: funky minimal grooves. first up there is >ghost track< a typical dry minimal loop with a rhythmically in touch vocal sample that is then juxtaposed by a simply astonishing piece of melody. goose bumps and groove humps on the floor - guaranteed! on the flip: >girl<. here braemer has created a dubby piece of tech house that floats towards a soulful vocal and some beautiful strings. this is one for the early morning, or in berlin, the late afternoon, those times when everything seems in perfect harmony with each other. last up is >guitar man<, yet another very sample-based stripped down loop with one riff of an echoed guitar being the protagonist. when that riff is fully played out, we all know its summer. but it wouldnt be berlin if there werent some dark wobbly basslines seemingly destroying this but in fact creating the perfect combination of soft and hard, of light and dark. on top of this the vocal sample >i wont leave< perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the praised berlin afterhour. stil vor talent is back at home with this ep.

>ghost story< ist eine faszinierende reise in die dunkelheit begleitet von gruseligem piepen und geisterhaften melodien. auf der b-seite verzichtet >this way we play<, keinesfalls auf den schaurigen nervenkitzel. der track ist treibend und schlagend zu gleich, mit unheimlich verstimmten synths...
facs & dylans label biotic was killing it a few years ago with their own personal take on dnb, after a four year break the label returns with a sure fire smasher. on the a facs >ghost< comes with old skool style beats, orchestral stabs and punishing bass while on the aa fon gives us a slab of dark and menacing riffs and power bass, both tracks will shake the system when playing, power tunes for the dance.
