up first is gigolo, a spare and weird house cut with sine waves and random claps, hunched drums and trippy synth lines. it s a unique track made in a unique way and will lead to plenty of freaky dance floor moments, for sure. co. art is a whacked out techno cut with slap-funk claps, blistering and blistered synth lines and a rugged bit of bass underlining it all. the track is cavernous and metallic, empty and distant as if it somehow survived a nuclear blast. on the flip, alzheimer is a slow and gurgling, swampy techno number with broken drums and crawling synths that sound like their batteries have run down. icy, watery melodies eventually rain down, but the track remains resolutely eerie. last of all, fabric is another decaying track with subtle, heavily filtered synths and drums all making for a minimal groove that is barely there.

started is probably the grooviest of them all and for sure youve heard it before if you’ve been attending the right parties. breaking the boundries between techno and house this is a true masterpiece. on the same side he also shows a more relaxed atmosphere filled with jazzy percussions and easy synths. stors kinda makes you stop and dream for a while.
first on side b we have another dancefloor monster. no more is is driven by a hypnotic synth and infused with enough drums to keep you on the move for the whole 7 minutes. le van a cantar keeps the catchy driving mood but this time iulian explores a more broken path. bubbly voices, snares and a haunted synth emerging now and then make this corner as interesting as the rest.
four quarters is a must have for any serious collector. not to mention if you are a dj.

we find it slightly hard to believe that it s been three years since blocks and escher launched narratives music with their explorative *sagan / broken* 12-inch. unafraid to stray from its drum & bass roots, the label has since become synonymous with encapsulating, poignant, cutting-edge music. favouring quality over quantity, blocks and escher have kept the narratives release schedule sparse, only now hitting the big 1-0. along with the founders, only overlook, asc, loxy & resound and rhyming in fives have had their names tied to the label, and it s the latter who returns now for the tenth release.
first surfacing in 2013 with the hindsight ep, rhyming in fives remains enigmatic to say the least. little to nothing is known about the producer, and aside from a free download that dropped last week via mixmag, the new 4-track light leaks ep is only the second offering ever from the mysterious musician.

idle hands has been broadening its reach both sonically and geographically this year, turning to ambient electronic dub with portland’s strategy, atmospheric broken beat with london-based leif and stripped down house with german producer matt karmil. this latest ep brings the focus back to bristol with o$vmv$m, the latest project to emerge from the young echo milieu. comprised of neek (commonly found bashing out grime and steppers alongside kahn) and amos childs (of jabu and zhou amongst others), the eight track release marks a step into even more experimental territory for idle hands…

having previously used their dnuos ytivil offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think batu, bruce, hodge and alex coulton), bristols livity sound crew turns to unknown french producer simo cell. the two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener *piste jaune* offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. the mystery man goes for the jugular on *cellar door*, with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. another fine livity release.

as idle hands reaches its 30th release, it gives us great pleasure to welcome rising talent matt karmill to the fold. to date matt has delivered a strong body of work to labels such as beats in space and yume, as well as dropping the cryptically titled - - - - album on popnoname’s pnn label last year. this three track ep marks his first appearance on the idle hands roster after earning his stripes on the shelves of the shop, and he will be following this record up with an album for us later in the year. the hooky leftfield house constructions on play it continue the thread of adventurous releases idle is championing in 2015, following strategy’s seeds of paradise lp and leif’s broken beat excursions. with a balance struck between experimentation and satisfaction, matt has delivered a record that continues the all important tradition of timeless music that the label always strives for.

finale sessions founder michael zucker steps into the limelight with his first full ep for the label in the five years it has been running. zucker has of course featured on a handful of split releases from finale but he doesn t waste any of the space afforded here with a quartet of superb and varied productions. leading the way, techno track his spirit bristles with life and percussive energy whilst inner city peace will likely raise some interested eyebrows in west london thanks to its killer broken beat programming. face down, zucker dips into his personal archives for an unreleased and rather crisp remix of introspective and jenifa mayanja hookup when the rain comes down whilst the wonderfully named spiritual graffiti ends the release on a high note

myk derill is one of the most interesting dub-techno artists. here he offers four great tracks of high quality and class. never hard but never soft. myk derill takes a turn for a more broken rhythm industrial looped with vocal.

now a regular member of the figure roster, young portugese talent lewis fautzi resurfaces again, fresh off the back of an inspired full-length debut for soma records. continuing with his own take on the darker, trippier end of the techno spectrum, we re treated to 4 new tracks, beautifully sequenced and alive with energy. from the depths of fautzi s studio, >signal of the light< emerges with its deep resonant acid tones and broken beats. setting the mood, fautzi then unlocks the monster inside with three club-designed cuts that rattle, fizz, gyrate and swell with precision intensity. a name to keep an eye on without a doubt, its no surprise this young man s vision of modern techno is finding its way into dj s sets far and wide.

hamburgs broken techno duo fallbeil drop three tracks of insane corroded techno on us. improvising and balancing between techno, noise and electro, they are defining an authentic sound in techno

rising label 04 is coming with a very complete ness ep which includes a ben gibson remix. >chronoscope< is the intro track that opens the release, a beautiful landscapes piece where ness shows his love and dexterity for the ambient music. following, >pantropy< is already starting with a heavy kick, far voices layered between the percussions and a sweet melody developing and coming up with that >trancey< touch that ness is able to do. on the b side comes >uchronia<, the track from where the release take the name, a strong broken track with shaped and dynamic percussions where some >chronoscope< landscapes are used flowing as the track goes on. to close the ep ben gibson delivers a classy >uchronia< remix going simple but effective, a perfect balance between gibson style and ness track that totally works out on the floor and makes the prefect closing track for that release.

johnny superglu s second release on plynt, rambo village is his darkest work to date, a mysterious, ethereal and hypnotic urban safari infused with the post-industrial spirit of his hometown of charleroi, a scarred, broken landscape of crumbling steelworks and decaying iron mills. pressing a disparate variety of antique, analogue audio equipment into service, it s a piece of low-fi knob-twiddling shot through with the spirit of chicago s house hey-day and iconic acid house with an instant dance floor feel. enter a moist world of dancing red-masked devils, driven by a hypnotic & mysterious flow that will freeze your blood.

title track joyride kicks things off with a straight up 909 beat, complete with scifi sweeps and classic wood block percussion, quickly working its way into an very subtle groove with every element working effectively to keep it fully funk laden. sideways completes the a side of the release and gets going right from the beginning. pumping percussion takes hold and hits the ground running before a perfectly weighted synth hook lashes over the top with henning playing with the synths lfo to creative effect. dust takes things down a notch as swirling pads drape themselves over a serious 909 beat. henning lets this one loop out, letting the subtle variations in the synths do the work as the 909 holds the beat solid and reminiscent of early berlin/detroit dub techno crossovers. mars attacks closes of the ep and does so in particularly fine fashion. a more broken beat affair this time from henning and he really works his machines into a sonic warfare of bass tones and tweaked out synths that sear through the crashing percussion workout.

haunted doorbell are timothy j. fairplay and matilda tristram who released xylophone together last year on astro lab recordings. picking up where xylophone left off unconnected thoughts on jacking is four tracks of naive melodies, rough slamjack drums, and new age atmospheres. starclash kicks off side a, with its dramatic arpeggios and sid chip crashes, techno to soundtrack the saturday night laser show at the planetarium. following is a night of adventure with its eastern scales and washy broken chorus unit hiss. on side b we have beautiful sheffield - an ode to electronic musics (possibly) most important british city and the title track rounds of the ep - house music for listening to while looking out to sea.
